Then people over 6'2" should get the emergency exit row for the same price as standard seating.

Im disadvantaged. I can't even change myself. Im not being included. This is discriminatory.

Stop eating. Then you can afford to buy your three seats, maybe even 2 next month.

People are going to abuse this system. Southwest probably going to regret this decision.
These days even if you score an "A" group boarding pass, there is now and endless parade of people who still get to board before you. I guess fatties needing extra seats is now another such privileged class.

I guess spending a little money for A1-A15 will move you up a little, but I bet fatties still get on before you.
I was on a flight back in March with my wife and daughter and we had something like B20-ish boarding numbers, should be no problem to sit together. After all the A-group boards, the gate agent announces families can start boarding before B-group. It's fine but normally for very small children. Agent then goes on and on about how if you have anyone that you can claim as dependent on your tax return that you can board. So families with 16,17,18+ yr old kids were boarding. I considered getting out of B-group line with my 17 yr old daughter to board but I thought it was so ridiculous. It definitely pissed off a lot of people watching more than half the plane board before B-group. We barely got seats together in the very last rows of the plane.
All designed to make you pay an extra $40 for A1-15. Even $20 extra doesn't always equal A boarding pass

The right answer is to discount fares for those of us under 5'6 and 150 pounds.

Two things come to mind here……

1. What criteria will SWA use to determine eligibility for the free fat seat? Will there be some sort of "form" you cont fit through like "carry on luggage" ? Too big? You're ok.

2. If you are unfortunate to have that center seat as your only choice (someone snatched the aisle seat), what do you do? The armrest is down from the aisle seat…….do you sit on her O2 generator? Do you sit on her and dare her to squawk?

Based on the pics in that article, I am fine with letting Shamu have her own row.

No way would I want her cramming up against me because some FA is barking about free seating and it's a full flight.

Folks are going to get involuntarily bumped imo.
they article says the fats have to ask for the extra room with the gate agent.

So the flight is full and suddenly someone does not have a seat b/c the fat one needed extra room?

In effect... everyone that flies on SW now is subsidizing the "weight challenged" peoples.

Just great.

These blimps will no doubt bring their "service animals" along so that they can elicit even more attention.

Don't acknowledge these peoples... never grant them what they crave most... attention.

F this.

I'm 6'7", 250#

I can fit in a single seat without needing additional width but I would LOVE some additional legroom. My height is not a choice, it's just something that happened in which I had no choice in the matter.

Being "super fat" as the article states is definitely a choice. I realize that most people would rather not be fat, but their lifestyle choices lead them to be that way. They can try to throw that blame on their parents or family, but no one is shoving food down their throat.

I've endured 6-hour+ flights in standard seating with the 4'10" person in front of me reclined (as is their right) and just chose to deal with it rather than making an issue out of it.

If you don't fit in a plane, take a car. If you are going overseas, take a boat.

Bill Burr is probably the best comedian out there at the moment. He made the comment in this clip you posted and said "I lean left but I'm not all the way left". I think that's bull-***** I think he just pretends to be a lefty to get away with the jokes he makes. What a world huh? If you're right leaning and make fat jokes, you're canceled, out of a job and homeless. But if you are on the left and make the EXACT same jokes, all is well.

If faced with that as the only place to sit, I would just admit defeat and try to get on a later flight. But I'm taking a picture in case I have to argue with the airline for reimbursement.

Why don't the airlines just build bigger passenger airplanes? Some of these planes are 20+ years old.

I'm curious if the airline can require them to sit in certain seats. For example, let's say a person they deem necessary of 2 seats wants to take the middle and aisle seats. That's inherently dangerous for the person sitting next to the window in an emergency situation. I would think it's common sense that the less mobile would be the last off the plane in an emergency due impaired mobility, which would in turn impact the safety of anyone that they are closer to the exit than. They generally seat those in wheelchairs in the row right behind the bulkhead to help them get in and out. They are also given a specialty boarding pass when they check in that allows them to board before anyone else. Are we to expect them to also receive the same treatment for initial boarding? They would then get to pre-board specifically due to size?

All the fatasses should be in the back. If there's an emergency, they wont be able to clog up the aisle like the inside of their buttered arteries.

God I love liberals. "Why don't we just build new planes to accommodate the fat-asses rather than have to tell them the uncomfortable truth that THEY are the problem, not the airplane."

Meanwhile, my wife had to pay SWA $125 to travel with a puppy that had to be in a carrier and stowed under the seat. I have no rationale for why SWA charged this fee as none is provided. If SWA does this, these people need to be pre-boarded at the back of the aircraft.

But really Southwest sucks and you should be getting points on one of the bigger airlines anyway so you can use them for overseas travel.

Really... Southwest is trash and been that way for years.

It's astonishing. First, airlines don't build planes.

There is a finite amount of space to economically and efficiently fly people around the globe. Building planes to accommodate an average per person weight of 300+ lbs is going to seriously eat in to profitability. Pun intended.

Why tf do you want to shift the immense burden (again, pun intended) on to airlines, which in reality is just shifting the burden on to every other paying customer? If a fat ass needs two seats, they can pay for two damn seats or not fly and use the money on a gym membership.

Just glad I did not stumble up on her sunbathing on the beach. I'd bet good money there are the remnants of at least three harpoons still embedded in her body and Captain Ahab tangled in ropes on her back.

Yeah...except if you don't think they are going to force all the other passengers to eat the cost of this you don't know anything about economics.

All of their customers now pay extra for them to vortue signal and cater to fatties who don't take care of themselves.

If I wanted to pay extra for anyone to have extra space I would pay extra for me. Because it's my responsibility to make sure that I meet the requirements to be a good passenger on their plane and book the correct amount of space to accommodate myself.

I'm 6'4 and 230 lbs, and I have to squish my arms in to make sure I'm not encroaching based on the one time I've flown SW in the last few years.

If this gets me an extra seat I'm all for it, although I'll still avoid flying SW if possible. I'm also trying to drop 15-20 lbs, so that might work too as long as it's in the shoulders and not the paunch - in which case I'd prefer to keep the weight.
