I'm booking travel for next year, I'm about 2 fifty depending on the holiday we just celebrated l. I plan on requesting a free seat for my backpack and seeing how this goes.

I flew Frontier with my 2 kids last summer. We only fly with personal items, i.e. backpacks. My son and I head down the ramp, and they pull her to remeasure her backpack. Maybe she has an extra book. Or granola bar. IDK. All she'd have to do is hand it to one of us. We still had room in our packs. But we've already been herded aboard. She's a rail thin college runner. They're about to charge an extra $90 or whatever, but with one last superhuman heave, she crams the pack into the box and passes muster. Meanwhile Shamu W. Jabba gets a whole row for no extra charge. Nuh -uh. No.

I have no intention of ever flying SW but if I did I would demand an extra seat and threaten lawsuit if not given.

Headlines from the future:

Southwest customers frustrated that people are taking advantage of their new policy by identifying as "customers of size" to get free space.

Re: "Just like the therapy animal BS."

Few years ago a weight challenged (fat... not phat) human unit waited at the gate with her "service" animal... a weenie dog sporting a red vest indicating "service animal."

I was surprised Ms. Blimpie didn't put the dog in a bun and eat it.

It was great that no one moved out of her way / acknowledge her presence.

So they are basically giving blobs 2 free seats for being blobs, then I should get 2 free tickets for normal sized family members to fly with me.

Meanwhile, my wife had to pay SWA $125 to travel with a puppy that had to be in a carrier and stowed under the seat. I have no rationale for why SWA charged this fee as none is provided. If SWA does this, these people need to be pre-boarded at the back of the aircraft.
If it's a Houston or San Antonio flight you're risking severely throwing off the aircraft's CG!

We already tried that with Keiko the whale and it took forever to repair the damage that caused! It ended up a Class A Mishap and nobody from the Air Force wanted anything to do with gear parts from the flight that were deemed serviceable. For all I know they're still in San Antonio.

If that's what one killer whale can do, just think about a whole bunch of Southwest "passengers of size" are capable of!

There was a big Ole frumpty on my last flight. She needed 3 seats, only got 1. Double seat belt extenders required.

Plane had to be trimmed out to compensate the unequal weight distribution from the excess gravitational pull.

If they're not embarrassed for being a walking tub of good with no discipline, then I highly doubt they are embarrassed by this. Many may actually enjoy the attention they get.

My overweight mother in law refused to fly for the longest time due to not being able to fit into the seat, so I have a bit more empathy.

A couple of things:

-This policy has been in place for almost a decade. And it hasn't seemed to really affect Southwest so far.

-The policy requires that you purchase an extra seat and then get a refund after the flight is over.

-you can purchase an extra ticket as long as there available seats. If you need an extra seat and there aren't any available, you will likely get bumped.

-people who purchase a second seat are always going to prepared to ensure they get their two seats together. when you check in they print out a second boarding pass that says reserved or something like that so you can place it on the seat next to you.

-this isn't just for fat people. It's available to anyone willing to pony up the cash for an extra seat. I've seen people do this because they have anxiety, autism, or any number of reasons.

Read past the headline. They've already clearly articulated what you'll have to do and I suspect its not even close to what you're thinking.

I already ditched flying SW thanks to the ridiculous **** in this picture. You see this huge line of wheelchairs for all these people that supposedly need them, and they get to pre-board. Then, in-flight a miracle happens and 90% of them just walk right off the plane at the destination. Southwest flights have restored more people's ability to walk than Jesus Christ himself.

There is nothing more frustrating than finally getting boarding position A16, only to see 67 pre-boards with their +1's...
