I wrote both TX Senators and my Congressman about why I thought AM radio should continue to be available in new cars. Here were the relative responses in a nutshell.

Cornyn, yes I understand but we must be mindful of not overegulating. Followed by a 2 paragraph rant about expanding internet infrastructure. What does one have to do with the other?

Cruz, thanks for your input and I will consider it if it comes up.

Latrell - I agree and I appreciate your continued input on this and other issues . It was actually a pretty well written and well considered response that actually addressed his/his camp's reasons why they agree.

I just thought the relative responses were somewhat interesting hence this post.

Yes, but the overall point is that it will muzzle AM radio. Sure, some people will figure out how to get it. The vast majority will not. This is deliberate.

Cruz has been trying for a while to get a bill and recently had 60 Senate co-sponsors.

CRUZ, MARKEY ANNOUNCE BILL TO PROTECT AM RADIO HITS 60 COSPONSORS
Quote:

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, recently announced the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act now has bipartisan support from 60 members of the Senate. This bipartisan legislation would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their new vehicles at no additional charge. The House legislation has 246 co-sponsors, as well.

I am ignorant on why AM should/should not be maintained in cars, but the government requiring automakers to do something "free of charge" just doesn't sit well with me.

While it may be "free" on all cars I'm sure the cost is just moved to another part.

Scratch all that...techno-ag reminded me why they're very much needed in vehicles. Natural disasters & ROADTRIPS!!!

It's needed for the apocalypse or war. Pretty cheap. I say keep them in the cars. Sometimes the AM radio station in town is the only thing still going after a disaster.

Since Rush passed, I have not had any need for AM radio.

Even then, I usually got his show on my phone.

My dad's 77 Chevy 3/4 crew cab never had a radio while my dad drove it. It did have a/c which was optional. He considered not getting it since his previous truck did not have it. Just heat.
No power seats or windows of course. It cost a little over $7,000.

Yep, conservative talk radio dominates the AM dial and it is currently available to every person that purchases a car in the United States. Leftists would love nothing better than to eliminate that conservative voice.

Thankfully, AM radio is also critical in times of emergency or disaster, so there are still enough sane Democrats that support leaving it in the cars that it is safe - at least for now.

If I remember correctly you tune it in with the right knob. Then you pull the button out and push it back in. That "sets" the channel so to speak. Could be off, but I seem to remember this along with how to drive a 3 on the tree which was the custom at that time!

I listen to AM radio, almost exclusively. Car manufacturers should not be forced to include a radio, of any type, by anyone but the buyers. Of course, they should not be forced to include a lot of the things the feds require.

No but car manufacturers have proposed not including it going forward because EV interferes with it the signal supposedly making the am band unusable and it also cuts (minimal ) cost on the vehicle . A little bit of shielding would solve the issue . Consider what particular political leaning lives on Am radio tho. Yes, the
Conservative movement needs to adjust and adapt and they have but there are other reasons to keep it as well. Longer range broadcast for disasters and traffic and weather reports and local news for instance . The legislation would be to include am if the car has a radio as I understand it . Imo, this smells mostly of political manipulation. I will admit I am conflicted because I'm a "let the market decide" type but I like AM content . Maybe fm would fill the gap but it's only line of sight transmission. Sat based is mostly not going to provide local /regional content imo.

Also Jmo but if am radio goes away in cars then am stations will also become extinct. Rush may have almost single handedly saved AM radio and this burns leftists up to this day imo. His impact is still apparent.

Perhaps I am an outlier but I probably listen to AM during approx 50% of my drive time especially when in an urban/suburban area.

I've covered this extensively over the past year. The federal government is likely to pass legislation in the next couple of years requiring AM in cars, especially since sporting events, emergency broadcasts, and weather/farm reports are all AM radio. American carmakers already backtracked from last year's pledge to eliminate AM.

AM radio? My wife is thinking about a new car but can't find one that has a CD player. Made the mistake of suggesting a music streaming service or Sirius XM subscription and can tell you with absolute certainty that this is NOT an option.

Good news - just because Cornyn says that is brisket does not make it so. Any Texan worth their salt knows that is not worth feeding to the dog.
