Someone should over regulate Cornyn's brisket.
My 1961 MGA Mk 2 had no air conditioner, no outside door handles, the convertible top was a rotted mess so only a tonneau. Drove it to high school in Alabama. Yes, we were tougher back in the day.oldcrow91 said:My dad's 77 Chevy 3/4 crew cab never had a radio while my dad drove it. It did have a/c which was optional. He considered not getting it since his previous truck did not have it. Just heat.Burdizzo said:
I still remember the days when ANY radio was an option.
No power seats or windows of course. It cost a little over $7,000.
No, auto manufacturers are deciding it is too expensive to include an AM radio tuner in new cars. But in dash GPS maps with directions, syncing with your phone, heated steering wheels & seats along with black boxes tracking your travels are absolutely needed.YouBet said:
Guess I'm out of touch. Is AM radio being legislated away?
Yeah, somehow a broadcasting method designed for 1920's technology can't cheaply be implemented with 2020's technology. /srichardag said:No, auto manufacturers are deciding it is too expensive to include an AM radio tuner in new cars.YouBet said:

No kidding! I built an AM radio with a Radio Shack kit I got as a Christmas gift when I was like 9 or 10 years old. You can still buy something similar on AmazonBonfireNerd04 said:Yeah, somehow a broadcasting method designed for 1920's technology can't cheaply be implemented with 2020's technology. /srichardag said:No, auto manufacturers are deciding it is too expensive to include an AM radio tuner in new cars.YouBet said:

I listen to AM radio 80% of the time I'm driving. Music nowadays sucks.
Fwiw I'm in my late 30's.

No but car manufacturers have proposed not including it going forward because EV interferes with it the signal supposedly making the am band unusable and it also cuts (minimal ) cost on the vehicle . A little bit of shielding would solve the issue . Consider what particular political leaning lives on Am radio tho. Yes, the
Conservative movement needs to adjust and adapt and they have but there are other reasons to keep it as well. Longer range broadcast for disasters and traffic and weather reports and local news for instance . The legislation would be to include am if the car has a radio as I understand it . Imo, this smells mostly of political manipulation. I will admit I am conflicted because I'm a "let the market decide" type but I like AM content . Maybe fm would fill the gap but it's only line of sight transmission. Sat based is mostly not going to provide local /regional content imo.
Also Jmo but if am radio goes away in cars then am stations will also become extinct. Rush may have almost single handedly saved AM radio and this burns leftists up to this day imo. His impact is still apparent.
Perhaps I am an outlier but I probably listen to AM during approx 50% of my drive time especially when in an urban/suburban area.
Not in Tesla's or other electric vehicles.Ag87H2O said:Yep, conservative talk radio dominates the AM dial and it is currently available to every person that purchases a car in the United States. Leftists would love nothing better than to eliminate that conservative voice.Ellis Wyatt said:Yes, but the overall point is that it will muzzle AM radio. Sure, some people will figure out how to get it. The vast majority will not. This is deliberate.Quote:

Thankfully, AM radio is also critical in times of emergency or disaster, so there are still enough sane Democrats that support leaving it in the cars that it is safe - at least for now.

AM radio? My wife is thinking about a new car but can't find one that has a CD player. Made the mistake of suggesting a music streaming service or Sirius XM subscription and can tell you with absolute certainty that this is NOT an option.
GM and I believe Ford have already announced they will be dropping Android Auto and Car Play. They will have proprietary os that will have its own app store. They are cutting apple out. Android a little less since google is building the os for themagracer said:Android Auto, Apple CarPlay....????agent-maroon said:

Did a quick scan of the web, and found a link (and note from AI) that may be of assistance (even though the last note seems to say it's not possible):Boozer92 said:
Maybe. My kids Subaru won't bluetooth streams that aren't car play enabled. Until she got that car i didn't know that was a thing. But she couldn't listen to Aggie games on a stream except through carplay. Regular bluetooth connection didn't work for apps or streams.
2019 Forester. I am unaware of any other vehicle this applies to. Bur if one can do it. Others may follow
If it was not for AM radio we would probably be sitting in camps under a hammer and sickle flag right now. Just think if there was no Rush Limbaugh. I remember before him it was just dirty lib after dirty lib on EVERY SINGLE SHOW ON AM AND FM. I still remember hearing Rush for the first time. It was amazing because I literally never heard anybody before ever say ANYTHING conservative on the radio. It was amazing to listen to him the first time and hear somebody state views I held. The AM revolution saved this country or at least pushed communism back a few decades !!!AtlAg05 said:DD88 said:
Cruz has been trying for a while to get a bill and recently had 60 Senate co-sponsors.
CRUZ, MARKEY ANNOUNCE BILL TO PROTECT AM RADIO HITS 60 COSPONSORSQuote:
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, recently announced the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act now has bipartisan support from 60 members of the Senate. This bipartisan legislation would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their new vehicles at no additional charge. The House legislation has 246 co-sponsors, as well.
I am ignorant on why AM should/should not be maintained in cars, but the government requiring automakers to do something "free of charge" just doesn't sit well with me.
While it may be "free" on all cars I'm sure the cost is just moved to another part.

Agreed but my intent was for this post to be more about the range of responses from the different legislators than it was the am radio issue but it seems many here were not familiar with the issue.

It's needed for the apocalypse or war. Pretty cheap. I say keep them in the cars. Sometimes the AM radio station in town is the only thing still going after a disaster.

Sigh... didn't really miss them until Frys went away too. Haven't had a need to do a computer/electronics build in a while and don't really know where I'll shop when it's timeQuote:
