" ROME The Vatican on Friday excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigan, exacting a severe punishment on the most vociferous internal critic of Pope Francis for refusing to recognize the authority of the pope and liberal reforms made by the Roman Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.
Such drastic steps are exceedingly rare in the church and illustrated the extent to which Vigan the Vatican's former ambassador to the United States is perceived to have crossed a line. He has called on the pope to resign and excoriated him in harsh terms, including calling him "a servant of Satan."
Vigan's punishment suggests that Francis, who has faced conservative criticism since early in his papacy, may be losing patience with his sharpest critics in the church hierarchy who have challenged his papal authority in sometimes shocking and irreverent terms. It is also an indication of how Vigan has morphed over the years from a being a critic of the pope and the church's shortcomings on dealing with clerical abuse into a fringe conservative firebrand…"

Just excommunicated the one brave archbishop that was willing to speak truth to power. That's just perfect.

The church lost me after all the coverups. We just visited Rome and I had zero desire to visit the Vatican and "kiss" that ring.

Man, will await our RCC posters commentary on this one. I actually have read quite a few things Vigano has put out and he seemed like a good voice in the demonization. Pretty sad, to me.

Edit: 'denomination.' Apologies, but I sort of laughed when I clicked back on the thread and read that.

He actually did this himself by refusing to submit to the authority of the Pope and rejecting much of the teachings of Vatican II. It just finally caught up to him because as you will see, his view on both have influenced many of the faithful. He had his day in court.

I want to like the Roman Catholic Church, but just can't put myself under a pope - especially one like this. Protestant churches are all weak in comparison, but their weakness is also a strength: the believer's ability to seek an alternative when leadership is unworthy.

Something to understand:

"The Code of Canon Law considers excommunication as a "medicinal" penalty whose aim is to invite the offender to repentance. As such, there is always the hope that the subject of excommunication will return to communion."

He was not just some Priest, he was at one time the Papal nuncio (ambassador) to the United States. Every word he tweets, speaks carries much weight. In recent years, he opposed the Church on various matters and embraced tinfoil type political views.

If you run a large organization, it would be important to have all the managers, directors, etc., on the same page. He flat out refused. Instead of removing himself, he decided to run his angst through social media- as a sitting Archbishop.

Whether you agree with his views or not, his method was to do exactly what he was charged with- schism.

Satan will work tirelessly to corrupt everything that is good. The Church is not immune. As a reminder, There have been bad popes before and there will be bad popes again. Francis is one of them IMO. But we have had great popes as well. The pope is just a man after all and is just as susceptible to sin as any other.
The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.

Is this about Papal infallibility? Just to be crystal clear, it is understood that when he sits on the chair of Saint Peter and makes a ruling (ex cathedra)- which has only been done twice (both about the Virgin Mary) that ruling is infallible.

Logic dictates it would have to be given the scripture where Jesus give the keys to Peter.

So, we can presume that you also think Jesus did it to himself by refusing to submit to the authority of Rome?

Big "T" or little "t"? Just so I understand.

We say big "T" is the apostolic history, martyrs, and the sacraments. These are all rooted in scripture.

Little "t" would be the things that, if removed, does not fundamentally change what we believe. Things like vestments, music, etc.

Actually, Jesus did submit to the authorities. We say he freely gave his life for all of us.

When asked the very question by Pilate; "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?" Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above."

He had told Herod's guards; "When they arrived at the garden where Jesus was, his disciples sought to defend him. But Jesus stopped them, telling them he could call up more than twelve legions of angels to protect him. But that would be contrary to the plan foretold in the Scripture."

Political because this pope is political.
Since you post on the R&P forum if you were seeking an actual discussion you would have posted there. Posting here only leads to Pope and Catholic bashing so congrats on achieving that.

1 Vigano is guilty and he admitted as much in his statement given to the proceeding.

2 Vigano refused to show up and defend himself. He has arguments appear to have merit, but saints usually don't avoid court proceedings even if they are rigged or the charges false, they like Our Lord they will face power with truth

3. They are trying to use Vigano as a false flag and make him the pseudo leader of traditional Catholics, which he is not, there are many varying degrees of opinion of him. However now, we all be labeled as his disciples by those who pursue a modern faith and have to vilify the traditional one in the process.

Exactly. I'm ok with Vigano getting the punishment (he was very aggressive in denying the pope) but he needs to come down on all fake Catholic politicians that openly deny Church teaching and even cite their faith in their reasoning
