Vice President JD Vance blasted a trio of German prosecutors who said during an interview with "60 Minutes" that insults both in person and online are illegal in their country.

The "60 Minutes" segment that aired on Sunday reported on Germany's enforcement of its "hate speech" law, which has been around since 2017, and showed police raiding German citizens' homes and confiscating electronics over social media posts. During the interview, all three German state prosecutors told host Sharyn Alfonsi that insulting someone in public and online is criminal. Those who break the law are usually punished with a stiff fine, but repeat offenders could be thrown in jail.

"The fine could be even higher if you insult someone in the internet," said state prosecutor Dr. Matthus Fink, adding, "Because in internet, it stays there. If we are talking face to face, you insult me, I insult you, okay. Finish. But if you're in the internet, if I insult you or a politician …"

"It sticks around forever," Alfonsi said to Fink's agreement.

State prosecutor Svenja Meininghaus added that reposting a lie which could include gossip or fake quotes is also a criminal action in Germany "because the reader can't distinguish whether you just invented this or just reposted it."

Along with fining offenders of the hate speech law, judges sometimes confiscate their phones.

"How do they react when you take their phones from them?" Alfonsi asked.

"They are shocked," replied Frank-Michael Laue as the prosecutors laughed.

In Germany the people who post about a murder or rape incident online get more time in prison than the rapists and murderers who are actually committing the murder and rape. The US should leave NATO immediately. We should not be protecting governments like this.

We aren't supposed to leave NATO because their governments are fascist because some of our local elected leaders are also bad actors? That is ridiculous.

if the end game of government is more power, this is perfectly logical.

-make insults a crime.
-say you can't protect your citizens against people in other countries saying bad things
-take over and censor internet to "protect them"

I can't remember who said it, but there is a quote along the lines of "beware when the government says it is doing something for your safety, that is when it does its most heinous and dangerous things".

War generally weakens the bureaucrat class which allows for masculinity to have more value. The oligarchy/feudal blood runs much more deeply in Europe and has managed to maintain power even when they seemingly should lose it. So there is no reward mechanism for men.

It's not a strawman.

It is to point out that 3 people aren't "the German government". We have plenty of people here in "the government" that act exactly the same as those three people. It seems silly to clutch your pearls, get the vapors and demand we leave NATO over something we do as well.

Unless you are just looking for an excuse (ANY excuse) to get out of NATO.

No country on earth has the commitment to free speech both in concept and reality that the United States does. If we could only ally ourselves with countries that shared the U.S. commitment to individual liberties (a commitment which decreases a bit more every day, btw) then we would have no alliances or treaties with any country.

There is a resurgence of populism in Europe. However, the left is using every dirty trick in the book to postpone elections or invalidate them. Such as Romania, where the left got their asses handed to them. Their Supreme Court invalidated the win of the conservative. I have always been against NATO leaving Europe, but in the next year or two, if the people can't claw back control of their governments and restore sanity. Then I think it is time to tell Europe, "The free ride is over, parasites. It is time to pay for your own damn defense.

Who decides what is a lie? If this were the Biden administration, pretty much any opinion that's right of center would be judged as a lie or threat.
