A shark bit the hands off a woman along the shore of a Caribbean beach while she was trying to take a picture with it.

The 55-year-old woman, who is understood to be Canadian, had only strayed a few yards into the water when she was attacked last Friday.

According to the local authorities she "attempted to engage" with the shark when the 6ft-long predatory fish struck off Thompson Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It is understood she had one of her arms amputated below the wrist and the other half way up her forearm. She has since returned to Canada for further treatment.

"The shark was estimated to be approximately 6ft in length. However the species is yet to be confirmed. It has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs,"

The species was not confirmed, but local reports suggested it was a bull shark.

Got to find that shark and get that phone back......

Think she'll learn a lesson with this incident or continue with social media vanity dopamine hits?

"It has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs," the authorities said.
It was a combination of privileged white woman stupidity and social media vanity.

Idiot white women thinking all animals are cute and cuddly. If you have seen those videos of white women trying to carry, photograph, pet, or domesticate wild animals from jaguars to bears.....white women have been so sheltered and protected from the real world for so long they think every animal has the disposition of a Pixar/Disney movie animal.

And yeah.....it's only white women that are that ****ing dumb.

It's a ****ing shark. Don't try to pet the thing. It will eat you.

Very important. If it was a lemon shark or something, not as scary.

I wade fish in Bolivar, and occasionally interface with lemon sharks, and love it when I hook a 2 foot long or so blacktip, cause they are great eating.

But, any sign of a bull shark, and it's time to head over to the French bridge or the jette.

Still, I would never "attempt to engage" any shark that was 6 foot in length in a way where it is going to be close enough to bite off my hand.

Dude was basically Evil Knevil of the nature world.

It's how he made his money. He knew the risks and got paid for it.

I would say that he was dumb, but he took calculated risks in the interest of entertainment. He was a pro. And probably kept medical personnel on standby.

Well, at least give Irwin an assist for the shark's tasty lunch by educating white women to do dumb things with dangerous animal to post on their instagram.

Got a tail through the heart by a manta ray or sting ray.

Really weird way to die and a total freak accident. My understanding is He wouldn't have died if he hadn't gotten stabbed right through the heart.

Last line of the OP said locals think so. I'm with you, bull shark means it's time to quit wading that area or get your ass back in the boat or on the beach. Probably not a big problem but no reason to push it.

If the lesson to be learned is to not stick your hands in the water near a shark, I don't think it really matters anymore for her.

Proof of TOXIC MALES!!!!

Bull Sharks' testosterone levels are believed to be the highest in the animal kingdom. With 358 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) one shark tested even higher than a male African Elephant in heat with 64.4 gn/ml.

Think about it for a second. She was holding the phone looking directly at the shark for it to be able to take both hands in one bite. A moment of direct Instagram connection with nature suddenly turned into absolute shock and terror.

No survival skills, whatsoever......Mother Nature can be a real *****.

She's lucky she didn't pass out in the water and let the shark take another bite.

I've had some really nice encounters surfing. Not too many people know the thrill of sitting on your board when a huge school of bait fish surroud your board and the dorsal fin pops up beside you.

New Smyrna and Sebastian inlet are great spots for up close shark watching.

Bora Bora diving. Very sharky. I think this was a lemon shark. That was my friend in the pic for size reference. That was a big boy.

I don't ever wanna see a Bull or Tiger underwater. I would like to dive with the Great Whites in a cage in South Africa. Bucket list item.
