EPA Administrator says they are getting rid of the start/stop "feature" on cars. Good riddance.

Had a truck that I'm 100% sure had engine issues because of this feature.

I despise this on my new F150. Stupidest feature ever.

I asked my dad when I was a kid why he didn't turn key off at stoplight to save gas. He said, "cause it takes more gas to fire it up". This was 1961 thinking though.
My F150 has it,and finally I learned to disable it after I start it. Wife even does it if I forget. I want to get as much as I can out of those $300 batteries.

we'll save 8 cents of gas a year with this feature, that probably costs the consumer an extra 1000 to install. Brilliant government thinking.

This was so ridiculous for so many obvious reasons but the one I hated the most, only when I was unlucky enough to drive one as a rental, is it was so damn disconcerting to have it sound like the engine died at every red light. It's such an uneasy feeling, especially in a rental, where you're already not familiar with your surroundings.

This. I get tired of doing this every time I start the car.

Did they ever demonstrate that it could save an appreciable amount of fuel in typical driving patterns?

The only time I could think it would remotely make sense is city driving in a properly designed hybrid that can do a fair amount of slow speed driving electric only.

OF COURSE, RIGHT AFTER I ORDER A NEW TRUCK LAST WEEK!!

Also, we need to ditch that damned disabling device that was legislated into cars for the 2026 model year.

My '23 F-150 has this and it is the most annoying feature known to mankind. I realize you can just turn it off, but I went ahead and bought one of those plug-in gadgets to bypass the button.

Probably not. And I've always wondered about the wear and tear of stopping the engine and starting it like that. Is that a concern?!

I'm permanently scarred from driving colossal POS cars that were older than me. Stalling out at a stoplight and not being able to start the car again is just about panic-inducing!

on the BMW it is not just every red light- it's every time you try to park, or you are trying to turn at a stop sign and the engine cuts out when you are trying to gun it...

AWFUL!!

Wear and tear cannot be good as the engine is relying on a residual oil film at startup rather than a pressurized film. 100% normal for startup, but has always been one of the harshest conditions for engine wear. So, now, rather than less than 10 times per day, max, maybe only 2, you have multiple start/stops with the engine relying on that draining oil not going away enough to add wear damage.

It was, is, and will always be a dumbass idea implemented by a bunch of dumbasses who know nothing about cars, but needed that feel-good dopamine hit that told them they were "doing something."

It was a feature, not a bug.

But, you have to admit, a lot of those old cars had character.

Regardless of what small amount of fuel savings it may provide, the idiots at the epa clearly didn't consider the tradeoff of battery and starter early replacement.

On top of the wear and tear on the engine/ignition, my concern has always been the sluggish start when trying to beat traffic. My wife's Explorer has this feature and I have somehow figured out how to turn it off. I'm not sure how I did it but it is disabled now.

Depending on the vehicle, it's not just software. Like displacement on demand, or whatever it's called in the different makers.

Used to have new F150s as rentals all of the time when I was a regional manager, traveling the country. When you put them in Sport mode, it not only made the trans shifts change, it turned off that stupidity.

I added something like this within the first week of buying my car. Have been driving it 2 years now and do not regret eliminating this "feature " one bit.

Thank you Lee Zeldin for getting rid of this useless feature! Now the brief period of admiration hogwash is over, get busy ridding us of at least 1000 other STUPID EPA regulations.

Obviously the idiots that thought of this never had to replace a starter or crawl underneath a hot car to tap on it a few times with a crescent wrench to get just a few more starts on it when you were a broke ass teenager.

The displacement on demand has 100% farked the GM 5.3L and 6.2L engine lifters. GM has been having lots of problems and THE number 1 reason I went back to get a Ferd over a GM.

Yes sir.

And to remove it, you need all sorts of mechanical changes.

I hate it on my 2018 F-150. As soon as I start my truck i turn it off out of habit.

Soon after purchasing the truck I had to make a pretty quick turn out onto a busy street from a complete stop and there was enough of a lag to concern the crap out of me. I would not be surprised if it has caused numerous wrecks over the years, in people who were expecting immediate responsiveness accelerating out of a stop only to be delayed by half a second or more.

Yeah, you probably shouldn't dart out across busy traffic...but if you do, you better make damn sure that stupid feature is off. It shgould not default to that setting...driver should have to activate it if they want.

Another Aftermarket Eliminator

Here's the one I ordered a few years ago. The downside (as others have shown) is that it stays on the diagnostic port. It hasn't been an issue for me, but I suppose it could be for others.

I also bought their horn honk eliminator as I hate that my truck would give the double honk if I got out and closed the door while it was running.
