it actually causes significant wear on the engine.
No doubt. I'm just saying there will be a ton of starters replaced because of this feature. I put almost 300K miles on a 2014 Explorer that didn't have that and never replaced the starter. Anyone foolish enough to use this silly feature on their car will probably be replacing the starter before 80K

This was so ridiculous for so many obvious reasons but the one I hated the most, only when I was unlucky enough to drive one as a rental, is it was so damn disconcerting to have it sound like the engine died at every red light. It's such an uneasy feeling, especially in a rental, where you're already not familiar with your surroundings.
I'm permanently scarred from driving colossal POS cars that were older than me. Stalling out at a stoplight and not being able to start the car again is just about panic-inducing!

Geez, y'all Luddite much? I'm the one supposedly shaking my fist at clouds.

It's not nearly the draconian feature y'all think. And in every vehicle I've seen it's easily turned off. In my Aviator it's a setting off a dashboard button and can be left off. In my wife's GLC43 it's a button right next to the transmission lever and takes maybe half a second to push upon each start.

Now, if they could get rid of back up cameras, blind spot warnings, auto stopping stop warnings, check the backseat pings, and other stupid requirements, we'd really be getting on

All of it adds cost to the vehicle.

How on earth are those bad? The back seat thing you can disable.

backup cameras and lane warning have a genuine, libertarian acceptable, reason to be a requirement, at least until privately owned/operated roads are allowed.

Depending on the vehicle, it's not just software. Like displacement on demand, or whatever it's called in the different makers.
The displacement on demand has 100% farked the GM 5.3L and 6.2L engine lifters. GM has been having lots of problems and THE number 1 reason I went back to get a Ferd over a GM.

I hate, hate, hate this feature. One of the first things I've done with the last couple of vehicles I've had is figure out how to turn it off because it sucks that bad.

Next the EPA needs to get rid of EGR, DEF and DPF systems on diesel trucks and return diesel to what it was before the stupid low sulfur requirements. I think rolling coal like the east Texas rednecks do is dumb as hell, but i'd live with it if we could have a return to the glory days of diesel engines being efficient, powerful, relatively maintenance free and getting 2x the mileage they manage to produce today because of all of the stupidity.

You don't have to be a mechanic to know that it causes wear on the engine, the starter, the surpentine belt, and the tension pulleys that keep the turpentine belt on. Hell the stops and starts on your alternator cannot be good for it. Worst "eco" feature ever put on a vehicle. 2nd worse? DEF systems on diesel engines since 2016.!

My F150 has it,and finally I learned to disable it after I start it. Wife even does it if I forget. I want to get as much as I can out of those $300 batteries.
I don't about all cars, but the Wranglers have a separate battery for the restart...

It's notorious for causing problems though...

especially if you have a 5.0 V8. I have a 2013 so I do not have the issue but the old man is getting rough around the edges, gonne need a new one soon. Hoping they keep the 5.0 around a couple more years, in 2027 maybe they will have all this garbage off the trucks.

Might have to go with a GD Ram 2500 diesel work truck

It was a feature, not a bug.

But, you have to admit, a lot of those old cars had character.
*car stalls*
pump gas 3 times, turn key
*no start*
pump pedal 1 time, turn key
*turns faster for a sec, no start*
---LIGHT CHANGES---
ohcraphcrapohcrap!!!
hold pedal to the floor, turn key
*car comes back to life, drive off quick and pretend that nothing happened!*

My F-100 still has character but I can't wait to swap from a carb and breaker points to EFI and ignition. I can handle the later but the former is just voodoo to me
I kept a couple sets of points in my 1970 Plymouth Duster. Those just seemed to not last.

Did they ever demonstrate that it could save an appreciable amount of fuel in typical driving patterns?

The only time I could think it would remotely make sense is city driving in a properly designed hybrid that can do a fair amount of slow speed driving electric only.

Probably not. And I've always wondered about the wear and tear of stopping the engine and starting it like that. Is that a concern?!
Not for the auto companies. They want you to wear out that engine faster so you need a replacement. Realize that they (along with most of the consumer appliance companies) love this stuff because it reduces the length of time you keep it until you have to either repair it or replace it.
I'm not a mechanic, but this probably causes more wear on the starter than the engine. Replacing a starter on newer cars can be very expensive and not something most do-it-yourselfers would want to tackle
Right. So worst case for the car companies is you have to buy a part from them and likely take it to their dealer and spend a fortune to get it fixed or you just decide it's not worth the hassle and trade it in for a new vehicle. Win/win for the auto company so long as the starter/engine makes it past warranty which it probably will.

I'm beginning to feel like my truck is a unicorn though.
My son worked as a mechanic last Summer, yours is a unicorn for sure and honestly you may want to consider making a change because that rebuild is probably a matter of time.
