STAFF: We cleaned this up because it was borderline going down the wrong path vs what the OP intended. Talk about the merits of the ruling or its perceived harm.

If true, this is a step in the right direction. I can only speak for my company, but 95% of the visa holders that I know do not possess any special skill that should prioritize them over U.S. citizens.

The Trump administration is planning to add a $100,000 to the fee for H-1B visa applications, taking aim at a program that is used to attract highly skilled workers to the U.S.

The additional fee, which was confirmed to CBS News by a White House official, would impact employers including tech giants such as Amazon, IBM, Microsoft and Google, which have relied on the program to hire foreign workers.

I hope this doesn't go for renewals. I have an H-1B that is my best employee. He's in the process of waiting for his green card, but since he's Indian, it will take years. If I have to replace him, I'm going to be very disappointed.

That's not enough. Make it $250k each year the H1B is renewed, and then we're talking.

I think I would make it 100k nonrefundable after 60 days additionally 250k per person refundable after verifcation of return home.

This at least puts some of the onus on the ones that brought them here when there are illegal overstays.

ETA: I'd be ok with having to license a number of H1B spots as well...Doesn't matter who it is but you can only keep X number of licensed H1Bs in country at once. I'm thinking along the lines of concurrent software license pools.

Nice. For a truly high quality candidate, a 100K signing bonus is not atypical out here in CA. **** I got 40k from a startup, 50k from a FANG and that wasn't even for a staff level position. 100k added cost will cut out all the garbage tier contractors while still be in the realm of what companies are forking out anyway for real engineers - just to uncle Sam now maybe instead of the candidate. What it will kill are all the trash contractors we only pay $100-$150k/year to out here that displace entry level domestic candidates.

Should be an annual fee. Make it cost a company an additional $100k per year to bring in these "highly skilled" workers that U.S. citizens just can't match. No sense in letting them make the financial case by amortizing the fee over 3 or 6 years.

Edit: Looks like txyaloo beat me to it.

Bro you beat me to this!
I was just about to post.

Just 100k? That is peanuts. I want 100k a year at a minimum. Renewal should be 250k a year.

Tariff the hell out of these jobs.

Do the same for L1 also. Most abused.

Quote:

President Donald Trump is expected to sign a proclamation as soon as Friday that would move to extensively overhaul the H-1B visa program, requiring a $100,000 fee for applications in a bid to curb overuse, according to a White House official familiar with the matter.

Trump is set to sign a proclamation Friday, requiring the payment and asserting that abuse of the H-1B pathway has displaced US workers. The proclamation restricts entry under the H-1B program unless accompanied by the payment, added the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss the policy before it was announced.

The move will require a "$100,000 payment to accompany or supplement H-1B petitions for new applications," according to a fact sheet seen by Bloomberg News. That payment would be in addition to current fees, which are more modest. Fees directly tied to the H-1B visa application currently include a $215 fee to register for the lottery alongside various filing fees.

Trump's proclamation allows for case-by-case exemptions if in the national interest opening a potential window for certain companies or industries to seek a workaround from the new fee.

(Companies will surely abuse this loophole like they do now)

Trump also plans to order the Labor Secretary to undertake a rulemaking process to revise prevailing-wage levels for the H-1B program a move intended to limit the use of visas to undercut wages that would otherwise be paid to American workers.

Accenture, Cognizant Technology and other IT consulting stocks hit session lows on Friday on the news of the visa fee.

H1B is the tip of the glacier.

There are several others that are misused even more. Like L1 visas and this E1B visa which is for "geniuses". Now Indians have opened consultancies on how to game the system to get these visas. Several people boast about it on Linkedin.

Crack down on those.

Agree; crack down if loopholes are being abused, but I'd rather some people test out as fake geniuses in their efforts to get here legally than simply paying a cartel to join a caravan and waltz on in here illegally at the border by the millions.

I worked for a company based in San Antonio with operations in Canada and a guy was promoted from the SA office to a Director position in Canada. The Canadian government would not approve him to take the job for close to 6 months until we could satisfy them that there wasn't a Canadian qualified to take the position.

I feel for you, but the vast majority of H-1Bs out there are those that are being renewed, not new ones. If this is a one time fee only I don't think it goes far enough.
Ozzy Osbourne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
This isn't going to make a dent. A one time fee of 100k is nothing to the companies that use the system the most.

I still wish they would auction off the visas. Maybe there are too many ways to game that system.

I think they could put a price on a green card and help pay off the national debt. There are many small businesses with key employees jumping thru immigration hoops and playing the ever changing game.

Make it simple and Only for those here more than 10 years with NO criminal record.

Trump is on TV now.

He seems to be harping about how companies find it hard to find enough people to work here. That actually is NOT the problem. He talks about "great people" who go to school here and have to go back and he wants to keep them here.

Many people, esp some classes of Indians go to fake colleges in the US and ones which are diploma mills in order to stay in the country. They don't care about the education.

Is Trump clueless about the problem??

Let it crash! Americans should be able to afford nice homes in nice communities!
