Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Friday that the Pentagon has agreed to host a new Qatari air force facility in Idaho, saying that the nation has played a "core part" in securing the Gaza peace deal.

"Today, we're announcing a letter of acceptance in building a Qatari Emiri Air Force facility at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho," Hegseth said.

Am I missing something here or is this completely unprecedented for the US to do? Why are we allowing a middle eastern military to have presence on US soil?

That sounds ridiculous. They have earned that the least would think? Someone like Egypt or Jordan has been more faithful of late.

It is for training them on the F-15s they bought. There will be no munitions

They gave Trump a cool plane and his family got a bunch of deals. Gonna give this the 48 hour rule, but that sounds kinda sus.

Edit: Sorry, recovering TDS sufferer here. Would be pretty cool to have another strong ally in the ME. Probably another good Trump move. Years of watching MSM has ruined me...

We do this all the time. Singapore has a unit at Mountain Home AFB where they operate their F-15SGs. I suspect Qatar wants a similar deal for their F-15QAs. Tucson hosts the Taiwanese Air Force F-16s and I believe the Singaporeans also operate their F-16s there as well. Additionally at least a dozen countries send their pilot candidates to our USAF or USN basic training programs.

These are usually part of the purchase of US-built aircraft. Small countries like Taiwan, Singapore and Qatar like these arrangements because it gives them access to huge swaths of training airspace that their home countries can't provide due to size.

You mean the plane that won't even be used during Trump's presidency?

It's an F-15 training facility. Foreign pilots train in the US and have for years.

Qatari money and using US military contractors. They need access to advanced pilot and support staff training so having a base here makes sense.

Plane went to the pentagon, and what family deals?

This also isnt uncommon. Sheppard, Morris, Ebbing, Luke, and Elgin are all used to train foreign pilots.

Amusingly I can't find the story on Qatar funded Al Jazeera's site. At least not easily if it's there.

https://www.aljazeera.com/

I'm going to go with the posters saying this is no big deal, and that we train the recipients of our military aid routinely on our gear.

Edit - I guess it's a little funny we announced it, and Qatar isn't making a big deal about it (yet) on their mouthpiece rag because the optics aren't great for them amongst the locals.

Germany used to have a squadron at Holloman AFB.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I recall flying to London, guy across the aisle was a young Saudi AF pilot who had just finished training at Sheppard in '06. So not so unusual.

Because Qatar gave him a 747 and a real estate deal. This should obvious.

do any other countries let the US military have installations on their land?

oh wait:

The US has military installations or bases in over 80 countries. The number is estimated to be around 750 installations across the globe. These bases are located on every continent, including Antarctica. The majority of US troops and a high concentration of bases are in Japan, Germany, and South Korea. As of early 2025, the US has approximately 170,000 active-duty troops stationed overseas.

Many foreign military personnel and units are temporarily stationed at U.S. bases for joint training programs, such as pilot training and weapons operation.

This reads to me like it is a customer support center to facilitate a $multi-billion purchase.

That's just good business sense.

If it includes support for the Israel / Hamas peace deal, that makes it even better.

Kinda funny to think about. We produced the F-15 from 1972-1997.

So, this would be kinda like if in 1972 we trained foreign pilots in P-51s.

Maybe this is "news" because it's a Muslim country that gave us a plane? Would they be the first Muslim country to do this, at that even without the plane, it would still be a big deal?
