Whoever put the law in, it is dumb.

We elected Trump to get rid of the dumb laws. So he needs to do it.

There is no reason to forgive student loans. If you take a loan, you effin pay it off. It is no one else's job to pay your loan.

END OF STORY.

Trump does not pass legislation. Obama and his Democrat minions took over the student loan industry for a reason.

While i agree with you on this there is the political reality of the clown show we call Congress. There is neither the will or the intestinal fortitude to initiate change to some of these laws, like immigration and student loans. To get real change you need the House and a filibuster proof Senate. So, just voting for Trump ain't gonna get you there.

Despite the claims to the contrary, Trump is *not* a king or dictator. While I agree with the sentiment, this isn't on Trump.

Trump has to follow the law. If he loses the appeals process and the judgements are pretty clear, he has to have his administration comply with the court interpretation of the law. That is what he is doing.

These debt forgiveness processes were passed by congress as other have stated and signed into law. IF the applicants are eligible and follow the process required, then the public gets to eat the cost. Blame the past congress and president that enacted it.

Said it with Biden and nothing changes under Trump. If you borrow money, you should pay it back.

Bad, bad Trump.

So, what you're saying is that the terms of the loan need to be followed, correct?
Yes

The terms of the loan were that they were to be forgiven after 10 years of payments and 10 years public service. So you agree that they should have been forgiven by the lender?

Thanks!

This was my point.

The terms of the loan are being followed.

NOW, we can argue whether this type of loan should have been offered, but, that's a different discussion.

Changing the terms of the loan after both sides have agreed to it is wrong.

Could the lender have tripled the interest rate unilaterally?

If not, then why should the lender be able to change other terms, such as early payoff if certain conditions are met?

Get him to work in a public service job for 10 years. You had that as an option just like everyone else.

The point of the law was to incentivize people to work in public service jobs despite the lower pay.

I think this is what drove DeSantis into politics. He got all his loans paid off.

No, he didn't.

Funny - he apparently carries a small debt, even though he is worth a few $million now. Maybe he's held on to it so he could get it paid off, but I think you have to make 120 consecutive payments.

So you were wrong. He hasn't had any loans forgiven. What in the world makes you think he's in the forgiveness program? You realize not just any public service qualifies, right?

Aren't you the one who questioned how Desantis paid for college when he ran for President? I remember a weird thread about that.

Probably, but I forgot how easy is is for up-and-comers to get these money-laundering book deals. Find a ghost writer, slap down a few hundred pages of oversized font yelling at clouds, and 100K copies magically get sold.

Yes, I agree one cannot change the terms once it is agreed to. 100%

But I think this is ridiculous for future loans. No loans must be forgiven on public money.

What if it's a loan to an H1B CEO, then it's ok, right?

Guess I have to reluctantly stand down on this one. If that is the idiot program put in place and terms were met, then so be it.

Federal government needs to get 100% out of the loan game though. Thanks Obama.

I thought someone earlier (above) said it was Dubya who signed it into law.

It was but Obama federalized the vast majority of student loans with passage of Obamacare.

I agree that this loan program should probably go away.

My point was that the people applied for the loans with a certain set of both requirements and benefits.

The people that meet the requirements should get the benefits they were promised when they signed up for it.

Garnishments for delinquent borrowers begins in January. The gov't can take up to 15% of their take-home pay.

If the department scales up its wage garnishment efforts, millions could be affected. The department said in April that more than 5 million borrowers were in default and nearly 4 million more were delinquent, which means they hadn't made a payment in more than 90 days.

Awesome. Many people not paying are only doing so because they intend to steal the money they borrowed. They never intended to pay the loans off.

That's why Gen Z or further down the line will eventually assign more powers to the executive in one way or another. Mostly because of the near complete un-accountability of the Congressional class the current setup is unquestionably on its last phase. It has shown it cannot be reformed.

Trump actually does plenty of things to get torqued about and most certainly his decisions / actions can be questioned, but the rage of TDS that flares up when people take things like this and paint it as Trump is a fraud, just like the rest, etc really undermines any actual discussion, particularly criticism of Trump.

People yell for 2 pages about Bad Trump, several folks attempt to point out its a congressional program, he tried to stop, SCOTUS said you have to do it, Trump complies and its still Bad Trump.

Between congressional abdication and judicial overreach, we are moving well past a stronger executive that I desired and think the Constitution and FF intended and well into the lands of kings, dictators and the eventual tyrant.

We need a Congress who legislates, a judiciary who impartially officiates, and a POTUS allowed to effectuate.

Exactly. But we are not going to get it. So we have to hope the Caesar when he comes is indeed more like Caesar and less like Stalin or Xi.

If a loan was taken out under a certain loan agreement/program, then that agreement should be honored and not reneged on (as is, I believe, what was being attempted here). That's the government's fault for offering them in the first place (dumb). Discontinue those programs and move forward with more intelligent practices, or better yet, stop backing student loans entirely.

Yes this is the correct path. Shut it down for future use but don't **** over the people who literally agreed to follow what the gov told them 10-20 years ago

Correct me if I am wrong but this program is specifically to entice teachers to work in lower income and undesirable areas for may years. It is the "free market" way to get teachers in those areas and instead of a higher salary, instead paying the loan.

I don't believe this is an English major barista at Starbucks getting forgiveness

Edit: got got by a necro post
