IF the signatures on the petition calling for it are verified, that is likely to be confirmed in Jan 2026, with most folks betting the referendum would be mid-2026. Separatist sentiment markedly lower than "stay" sentiment, but most definitely ticking upward.

Alberta declaring it wants to be annexed by the US might be one of the wildest geopolitical shifts I've ever seen…and would/could only occur in a Trump Admin.

Some on here want to create another liberal state in the Union?

It's the most conservative province in Canada and they own all of the O&G. How their conservatives lines up with ours? I don't know. I'm guessing they are still left of ours to some degree.

They are pissed that their guns are being taken away and that their oil and gas revenue is being siphoned to Ontario. They are being crushed by over regulation and an insane carbon tax regime.

You can't sneeze in Canada without a government bureaucrat demanding you pay a tax.

The only thing liberal about most of Alberta is they probably prefer their healthcare system over ours and they don't really give a crap about things like gay marriage. Not all that socially conservative but definitely believe in actual small government and far less regulation.

Canada is a stupid country that only exists because of our largesse.

I would be happy to take all of AB's resources.

I would offer a straight up trade to Canada. We take AB and they get Puerto Rico and Minnesota. I think that's a fair trade.

Only 10-15% of people in Alberta approve of Donald Trump.

I would rather Alberta become independent, and we sign a huge trade agreement with them for their oil. That would be a win-win.

Alberta needs the same "deal" that Quebec has with the Canadian government.
For example.

"Equalization payments: Quebec receives the largest share of federal equalization payments, which are a key federal transfer program to help provinces provide public services."

Population of Alberta: 4.4M
Population of Minnesota: 5.8M

With Alberta being the O&G hub of Canada and their more western cowboy ways, it's still a good straight up deal where we come out ahead. I think.

They aren't giving up that nationalized healthcare anytime soon.

Canada isn't going to just allow us to essentially split them in half either.

From everything I have read, this is just more TEXIT level mental masturbation as Canadian provinces do not have any unilateral ability to secede. They just have to hope a constitutional amendment will be passed to allow them out of the Canadian government.

I had thought there was greater support, but I guess social media warps stuff.

We lived in Calgary from 2014 - 2016 working for O&G company. The populace, external to O&G and agriculture, are moderates at best. Tons of people moved to Calgary from BC and Toronto because of jobs and then vote liberal. They also have a large Asian population. I was actually shocked how many when we moved there and this was coming from Houston.

The NDP was voted in while we were there and they were running on a platform more taxes, free stuff, and O&G must pay. The liberals and concerned moderates realized you don't bite the hand that feeds you and NDP lost to the United Conservatives a few years later.

Alberta would be a toss up any election cycle and not worth the effort.

They have a movement up there called Diagolon... Basically a alt right white supremacist group...

But one idea they have that I could get behind is a new country from Alberta straight down and over to Texas.

Basically, we get all of historical Texas back plus Wyoming, Montana and Alberta

Not exactly the worst idea in the world...

Then it sounds like it's still a win for us to make this trade. MN is the only state that has voted for the Democrat POTUS nominee in every election since 1972. It's a state of very stupid people.

So, if we make the trade then we actually give ourselves a chance of Alberta voting the correct way which MN is clearly never going to do again.

Maybe the bumbling, failed, incompetent, almost comical U.S. invasion during the War of 1812 when we had our a$$es kicked from here to Sunday is one pretty major reason Canada exists as its own country. Maybe the "51st state effort" will succeed though.
