As clueless or biased as many of our jurors can be, from what I have seen from many judges lately, people are taking a massive gamble that their justice won't be political or at the convenience of the state or whoever can lean on the judge the hardest.

That country is on a slippery slope and getting more slippery by the day!

I am wondering if the subtext here is the amount of immigrant crime that is causing such a backlog? And by takin those out of the jury system they can hide it from the public so they won't become enraged?

Likely valid take.

This is just a proposal and would have to be adopted by legislation.

They commissioned a study a few years ago to address the huge backlog of cases and a former justice suggested they adopt a "judge + two magistrate" panel system for lower level offenses to save time. This proposal ignores that extensive report and instead seems to be favoring a star chamber approach.

Honestly might be better than a jury of your multicultural "peers". Singapore got rid of juries for that reason

The fact that it's even proposed is enough to know that country is lost. Shouldn't even be a topic.

Address the root problem instead of removing the very basis of western law.

That has a very bad connotation but agree, what I was thinking of as well. Had 2 semesters of British history with Professor Ralph Quincy Adams. (Wonderful and one of my favorite profs.) I remember how British and why British law was formed and evolved. As did our forefathers who saw some pitfalls and crafted ways around them with the Bill of Rights.

This would be a giant step backwards, IMO.

What about when a woman is raped? Does she need 4 male witnesses to prove she is innocent?

Maybe. The only jury nullification going on in the UK recently has been juries refusing to convict environmental whackos who break the law during protests, and judges are just as bad.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. I have been watching a ton of Brit youtubers the past few years. They are mind numbingly ignorant. I don't know what they are being taught at school but it can't be very much. Know nothing about their own history.

Or is this their way of atoning for their past "sins" (and they were sinful) by bending over to every 3rd worlder and Muslim and letting them in and paying for their food and rent?

It's going to take a lot of epic failures by conservative politicians for us to get anywhere near where the UK is.

I'm betting we'll be fine.

Then again, if, when Trump is gone, the uniparty comes back the sme way they were before he came onto the scene, who knows.

Lost in all the pearl clutching posting is that this is a proposal, nothing more, that would require legislation and already has a lot of pushback.

I can't explain the psychology, but I can give you an example of the type of person who supports this. At the time she was in her mid-thirties with a government job and a liberal arts degree from a low-effort university. She was cute and bubbly but didn't realize that she wasn't the brightest crayon in the box.

Her take was that made sense to have 'professional juries' because then everybody on the jury would be an expert instead of silly normal people from the public.

It's too late.

Brits, by nature, have a sense of dignity and decorum and yes do not want to offend anyone. Which is why they won't say, "hello" to any strangers. They are too reserved and yes fearful as a result. Even their restaurant and store workers are more sullen and don't care if the customers get what they want nor enjoy their visit.

They marvel at how confident and therefore friendly Americans are everyday. When Brits visit the US for the first time, they are often taken aback by strangers offering to be helpful to them. Just greeting them when they enter a store or eating place surprises them.

And that sort of raised a question for me. Is the failure of certain ethnic groups to assimilate there a combination of not being openly welcomed or their own disdain for Brit culture? Some ethnic minorities have fully assimilated from the old British colonies, Indians, Jamaicans, and the like in the UK But the more recent onslaught of Muslim migrants are not assimilated, at all. Kind of a chicken or the egg question, I guess.

The UK: taking away protections and freedoms to "safeguard" protections and freedoms.
