I don't think that's the angle at all. I think a few things could be why they're reporting it:

1. I think they got the call from above that what's happening in MN needs to stop, so they're going to actually start - against their will - reporting the truth about the guy, which shows he wasn't just some protestor, which will make this story quietly go away. Probably something to do with Tampon calling Trump and then the state police actually enforcing laws.

2. There's a lot more about the guy that they do not want out and are trying to bury this story.

To your second question, no he was hoping to get beat up for the street cred and cool factor, possibly a lawsuit because the leftists all think everything results in million dollar legal settlements. Things didn't work out like he hoped.

I could see how cracked rib or bruised rib can be misreported as broken rib.

I can imagine broken rib hurts like hell, but I have bruised and cracked one before and it hurts quite a bit but didn't really impact mobility.
