Kids are already in private school

Praying this isn't a disaster for private schools

I think most of the 42000 are already in private school and are just applying for the credits.

I don't think it will have that big of an impact in school districts that already have good public schools. But it will in the big cities.

Bad public schools are about to get worse.

Bad public schools are usually the result of bad parenting and good parents with kids at bad schools are going to leave.

Not sure about that…Dept of Ed oversees the national embarrassment for last few decades and just throws more rules/reporting and DEI on the fire, local schools have 3-5x the number of administrators when schools were good, no discipline allowed, kids from bad parenting homes so let's just keep cuddling them and punish good kids, advance classes are forced to allow slower learners in, the teachers that want to truly teach are babysitting not teaching…..can't really get worse just following the downward trend to the bottom….can't get worse

The teachers have said many times "Let us fail kids who need to be failed", and "Get disruptive kids out of my classroom". It's not the "right" keeping those kids in class or the wrong class.

Furthermore, all those teachers blaming the administrators are missing the point. Those teachers voted for union leadership (and allowed it to stay in place) that did not focus on the things they claim they care about like discipline in the classroom. Instead, they focused on how underpaid they were to work 9 months out of the year (oh the overtime!) and how much they cared about kids. If teachers really cared, they would hav elected union leadership that focused lobbying dollars on fixing the big bad administrators.

Teachers can never admit their focus on themselves has been a big part of the problem. Accountability is a good thing. Too bad teachers didn't know how to provide that.

Texas doesn't really have teacher unions like you are speaking of, and when a teacher fails a kid (along with a couple of other teachers) at the end of the year only to see him promoted the next year, yeah, it's the administrators. A high failure rate reflects on them.

Yes, we absolutely have active organizations of national teachers unions in the state. They raise money through dues, elect school boards, lobby the legislature, provide cover for members. AFT,atpe, tcta are all very active in the state with tens of thousands of dues paying members. They have more direct impact on school board elections than absolutely any other type of organization. Im not sure why the lie that we dont have teachers unions cones from. The unions themselves advertise themselves as unions.

They can't strike, and that's the acid test for me. Their school board election impact is a problem with poorly informed voters.

0.00763% participation rate (based on approx 5.5 million school aged kids in Texas). I think we can slow down on the celebrations.

Agreed,

Until they can break out the kids who are already in private schools from the ones that are currently in public schools this is all just click bait.

I still don't think, outside of the inner cities, this is going to change much. We need to turn our focus and address the many ongoing issues in our public school systems starting with getting rid of NCLB.

Whatever gets the Teacher's Union and the Dept of Education out of it. Both have misappropriated taxpayer money for decades and our kids are dumber for it. They're more focused on raising woke kids than they are smart kids.

The camel's nose is under the tent. The program will grow from here, especially when everyone sees it's not going to kill public schools. If done right, this will make public schools better and will allow more parents a choice of where to send their kids.

This is just ignorance on such a huge level.

No one goes into teaching for riches. Most do it because they love it. Most would continue to do it if they felt they were supported

You need to talk to real teachers and not spew this nonsense like it is fact, but I'm sure you will choose to remain ignorant

That's a ridiculous statement.

I've had two kids graduate from public schools and a third is now in high school.
We've had issues with three teachers. Total.
People that are in school districts with a lot of poor teachers just made a bad choice about where they live.

Side note: My kids know that sentences begin with capitalized words and end with punctuation.
Because their teachers cared.

The amount of disrespect shown to teachers on F16 is ridiculous.

Makes me question the parent.

Whenever I hear a parent talk about how bad every teacher is at their kid's school.....I immediately think "It's you and your kid that are the problems".

Edit: I have to keep from laughing when they are in our district.

Pretty sure your math is wrong using round numbers to make it simple let's say it has grown to 55,000 because people continue to sign up and some of the people signing up will have multiple school aged children
The. 55,000 divided by 5,500,000
Is either .01 or 1% NOT .01%

Of course if my math is wrong I will self ban for a week
Of course most of those applying are almost certainly already in a private school so not sure it going to change the make up of the public school population

It's just the state govt giving back tax money to people who send their kids to private school

You are right, I fat fingered the decimal point. I also agree with you that most of these folks are likely already in private school.

Whether it is 1 out of 100
Or 1 out of 10,000

Not improving the situation for the vast majority of public school kids

Nah, it's a great day. Parents and advocates have been fighting for this for decades. The legislature should be commended for standing up to the teachers unions and school districts thar treat kids like revenue farms. It will grow from here. It also takes an upfront commitment in state spending.

School districts only can be accused of this because it's the game set out by the state.

Almost ever decision a school makes is dictated by the state of Texas. This isn't a secret or a liberal blame game. It's how our schools are set up. Accountability and funding try to be hand in hand, requiring attendance metrics, test scores, etc.

It is so blatently obvious that our elected state leaders are using local entities to shift blame that it's almost criminal. They've did this with property taxes until enough light was shed on the state stripping school funding away…while continuing the same mandates with the same costs. Then they could blame the local entities and fuel campaign dollars to solve the problems they created.

This really isn't a R/D thing though. Rs are just in charge now.

80% of the funds are dedicated to those people (priority 1 and priority 2 according to the scale provided by the state).
