That's the tragedy of Iran. They've been sanctioned up the ass for 40 years and still one of the more relatively advanced in the ME. If they play nice, are capable of being the financial, tourism, and economic capital of the ME.

The drones are the easiest part, to be honest. Most of the primary structure is styrofoam in many cases, and the motors, controllers, and data link (if it even has one, assuming it isn't sent on a one-way mission to predetermined coordinates) are easily sourced from China (think level of stuff you can buy off of Amazon).

Brits used their base there in 2024 to help defend Israel from Iranian attack. I guess that was enough to make their "we're doomed so let's hit everything we can" list.

More correctly, they turn off ADS-B out any time they want to in order to effectively "go dark."

When operating in civilian airspace (including overwater routes, sometimes) they typically keep ADS-B on so that other aircraft can see them and navigate appropriately. The showing up on tracking websites is just a side effect of this.

When "going dark" they have other methods of remaining visible to friendlies (Mode 5 IFF) which is encrypted and secure.
