Newsome is less than a year younger than me, which means he probably took the SAT in either '84 (unlikely), '85, or '86. At that time, 960 was 55 points higher than the AVERAGE SAT score.

Isn't 960 pretty low? I got a 1210 back in the early 90s. I know there was a grading update about 10 years later but I thought that was to make getting high scores easier?

Yes I don't know if 960 was "pretty low," but it wasn't high. The average (or minimum) to get into Rice around 1990 was 1300.

I know smart people who scored less than 1100, but not less than 1000.
