Even if legal, which it doesn't appear to be, this seems like a morally questionable decision.

Edit: One article had him listed as a Major General. Appears to be a Major.

It's not legal and if he was collecting retirement pay, as I am sure he was, he knew.

Arrest this guy and throw the book at him for aiding China. But it still isn't as much of a threat to national security as moving all of our manufacturing there.

Where are you seeing he was a Gen? All I'm seeing was that he was a Maj.

Correct with 24 years, so unless he was prior enlisted, calling him "elite" is dubious

Some British pilots were caught doing the same thing not long ago. It defies comprehension. Permanently remove from society.

Yep, hang him. Still curious though how he could have retired at major with 24 years- in 1996 no less- and still have much of use to PLAAF. Hopefully we can learn more about this deal while he spends the rest of his life in prison.

And he's clearly not a general. Some of you would benefit from reading the article before gracing everyone with your analysis.

He had a unique skill set in particular the CCP wanted to purchase:
Quote:

Gerald Eddie Brown Jr. Call sign "Runner." 65 years old. 24 years in the Air Force. Flew the F-4, F-15, F-16, A-10. Commanded units responsible for nuclear weapons delivery. After retiring in 1996, he became a contract simulator instructor training American pilots to fly the F-35 Lightning II.

In August 2023, he started negotiating to train PLAAF pilots. His intermediary connected him to the network of Stephen Su Bin, a Chinese national who pleaded guilty in 2016 to conspiring with PLA hackers to steal 65 gigabytes of classified data from Boeing and major defense contractors. The targets: the C-17, the F-22, and the F-35.

Read that again.

The same network that stole the F-35's blueprints then recruited the man who trained Americans to fly it, and sent him to Beijing to teach Chinese pilots how to fight against it.

First steal the machine. Then acquire the mind of the instructor.

Brown arrived in China in December 2023. Day one: three hours answering questions about the U.S. Air Force. Day two: a personal briefing to PLAAF officers. He stayed for twenty-six months. He only returned to U.S. soil in February 2026 and was arrested yesterday in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

More on the espionage program they ran on the F-35/Stephen Su Bin here. It's all pretty infuriating, warning.

When I was in Majors who rated as pilots or navs could be extended to 26 years max.

He probably spent 12 years as an officer, resigned, then spent the next 12 as a contractor, runnimg a simulator

That makes sense, or he was one hell of a prodigy child pilot.

Probably worked for the Air Force as a civilian after retiring from active duty.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I dunno. Presumably a company-grade command as he flew A-10's etc. The point is that after his retirement from USAF he became a contract instructor on the F-35 simulator, which presumably is a job a lot of tacair pilots would want.

I won't defend him as some sort of 'The right stuff' John Glenn super pilot (and honestly don't know much about him), but he had unique expertise in many respects as to doctrine and training they wanted to tap into, and paid for.
