For those who don't know, 'being crucified with Christ' and 'dying to self' are common phrases in Christianity. It stems from Paul, who writes to the Galatians (2:20), "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me."
It's the basic tenant of our faith, which says we turn away from our former sinful self (ie. it has died), we're reborn (saved by Christ's death), and we now live for Christ. It's the Gospel message...it's Christianity.
It would be difficult to find a pastor alive, who isn't familiar with these phrases. If you could find one, I'd suggest he's not a Christian pastor, because he wouldn't know/understand the faith he supposedly teaches, or he's purposefully being deceitful.
...which brings us to Talarico.
Talarico apparently doesnt know/understand Christianity 101, or more likely...decided to twist the meaning of basic scripture to bash Christians, yet again.
This guy hates Christianity...while at the same time is convincing a ton of people that he's a Christian pastor.
Even if you're not religious, and don't care about his war on faith...you might want to pay attention to his 100% fake M.O.

James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Texas, responded on Wednesday to a pastor who had suggested he should be "crucified with Christ" as part of a conversion, saying in a statement, "I love you more than you could ever hate me."
...
"Jesus loves," Mr. Talarico, a progressive state lawmaker who has put his faith at the center of his political campaign, said in the statement. "Christian Nationalism kills. You may pray for my death, Pastor, but I still love you."
Quote:
Many evangelicals talk about needing to be "crucified with Christ" as meaning turning from one's past behavior after conversion, as if it has been killed. But other, more common ways of describing someone's need for conversion are phrases like needing "to be saved" or "come to Christ."

Mr. Potteiger argued on Wednesday that Mr. Talarico had misrepresented his comments.
"I did not call for his death," Mr. Potteiger said in an interview with The New York Times. "I called for his conversion."
