There has long been a belief that the first weeks of newly elected congress critters involves parties and meetings that are all about getting the newbies in compromised spots. Drugs, drunkenness, sex, and being videoed with the wrong people---all tools that are used to keep you in line, but also to keep you owned.
In 1980, I went to work for an older CPA, in fact he was certified on the day I was born. So, much of his clientele was his peer group. Old and retired or retiring. One day, I was the last one in the office at lunch time and this old man came in and asked if I would give the check he was holding to my boss. Was to go with his extension. It was a tiny sized personal check and was for $1.6 or $1.8 million. I had only been with the firm a few months but I knew his name and that he had sold his business. I asked what he was going to do now that he was retired and he said move to his ranch and clip coupons, he had bought a ton of municipal bonds.
After lunch I gave my boss the check and commented that he must have had a pretty decent business and he replied well, he should have. It was a construction company and he would wine and dine some of the county commissioners, mayors, and other elected officials down at his ranch in South Texas on dove and deer hunts. He would run some *****s across the border and someone would take pictures, not naked sort of stuff, but the girls not wearing much, sitting in laps, while everyone was getting drunk.
Seems as if he got a lot of the contracts let by the various entities. My boss told me that he didn't think the client blackmailed anyone but they knew that there were images that they would never want to be made public.
