you have to own working dogs and let them do what they bred for to truly understand that a dogs happiness/ health is directly tied to fulfilling their mission.

There was some drama on this in Vermont a few years ago. There's a YouTuber with a hobby farm where he raises poultry and runs a few cattle. He clearly makes more money from his online content than the farm.

He was running into repeated problems with hound hunters chasing bears onto his property and disturbing his livestock. As presented in his videos, it seems hound hunters have more rights when it comes to pursuing prey on private property than the property owners themselves in keeping them off. No trespassing signs alone do not suffice, and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get your property declared off-limits before hunting season ever starts.

The guy clearly doesn't like hound hunting, which is his prerogative. He certainly did not pass up the opportunity to create content, but bottom line private property owners should be able to keep hound hunters and their dogs off their land.

It's getting to the point now with so many laws on the books, that we are all committing 10+ crimes a day that we don't even know we are committing.

When it comes to the sex (the non LGBTQXYZ kind), many have been committing those crimes for decades now. Our so I've heard.

Imagine if they knew about coyote hunting with greyhounds or hog dogs.

I had never heard of hog baying until last year when I went to a buddy's ranch in Orange Grove. He was having a problem with one monster hog tearing **** up and was good at being illusive. He brought in some locals that do hog baying as hobby. You could tell the dogs were already locked in when they got there. The whole process was nuts to watch!! They successfully got the hog too!!

The language of that bill makes it clear that it only applies to greyhounds moved interstate for the purpose of commercial greyhound racing. It's not a ban on working dogs.

Open field coursing and live lure training are also defined in that bill in how it relates to racing events. If people are that worried about it they can just amend it to slap "for the purposes of greyhound racing" at the end.

Well, that's cool. I didn't realize we could just slap language on bills we didn't like and go on about our business. I'll be amending Texas liquor laws for Sunday's and buying liquor on Sunday's now.

This is true and has been pointed out in a non-joking manner by law/policy makers

That's why it is no easy to weaponize the criminal justice system against political opponents or simply people you don't like

Criminal statutes accumulate, they rarely get repealed

I remember some politician, Republican I think, introducing proposed legislation that required 1 repeal for every addition. Of course, he did it to make a point, and it didn't go anywhere. But there is merit to the general idea

They just can't help themselves. They get elected, get in on the take, then **** their brains out to come up with idiotic legislation like this.

Then again, someone mentioned this was the Deep State's way at getting back at Americans for wanting to dismantle their corrupt bureaucracy. This could be likely since the alternative is just flat out stupid!

The text of HR 5017

The relevant part is probably Section 30(a)(3), which states:

"It shall be unlawful to conduct open field coursing or live lure training with the use of any bait that is not an inanimate object".

Just for clarity...

The "Farm Bill" in question is H.R.7567 - Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026.

The admendment is the full wording from H.R.5017 - Greyhound Protection Act of 2025.

Currently, that wording is not shown in the text for H.R.7567 on the Congress.gov website.

The purpose of H.R.5017 is to ban Greyhound racing nationwide. There are currently only 2 active tracks in the United States, both being in West Virginia.

The language in question is what Claude! posted above:
Quote:

(a) In general. It shall be unlawful

(3) to conduct open field coursing or live lure training with the use of any bait that is not an inanimate object;

"Open Field Coursing" is defined (basically) in the bill"
Quote:

(10) Open field coursing preceded commercial dog racing and is an activity in which greyhounds or other sighthounds are released to pursue and kill bait animals, including jack rabbits and hares, often in a fenced area. Greyhounds may collide and suffer injuries in the chase.

There is no language in the bill that outright bans hunting with a dog. The main concern is about training methods using live bait.

Several organizations have expressed public concern regarding "unintended conequences" on how that extends to hunting dogs:

1) American Kennel Club
2) Sportsmen's Alliance
3) International Association of Canine Professionals

My only question is how prevelent is the use of live bait training for hunting dogs today?

The questions might be how much greyhound racing is there in WV today. My understanding is the state ban in Florida pretty much killed the industry nationwide.

The bill hasn't passed yet. There's time to amend it. So yes, they can just slap additional language to the end.

The condition of open field coursing and live lure training is the only condition that doesn't already have the clarification (even though it doesn't really need it). The bill is already talking about them in the racing sense, open field coursing is a racing event that involves dogs chasing down live prey and it describes live lure training as dragging an animal to evoke a chase response.

How else do you train a bird dog without using birds?

In all honesty, gun dog training, hunt testing and field trials all use live birds. An advanced titled dog will be able to mark multiple birds and then retrieve them from memory.

It is fantastic watching a dog work in the field.

I've only seen bird training done with dummies and bumpers for both pointers and retrievers.

How do you keep live birds from flying away during retriever training?

Also, does "live lure training" pertain to bird dogs? I'm ignorant regarding what this term means but from everything I can find it strictly pertains to race dogs and the use of ground mammels.

What is the difference between shooting a live bird for a dog to retrieve and "hunting"

Or do you somehow use live birds without shooting them?

Here you go... The "unlawful" or "banned practices" section is very short...
Quote:

SEC. 3. Protection of greyhounds.

(a) In general. The Animal Welfare Act (7 U.S.C. 2131 et seq.) is amended by adding at the end the following:

SEC. 30. Protection of greyhounds.
