Just found out one is planned for construction about 2 miles from my deer lease.
I absolutely HATE that i am now going to have to spend my free time fighting a fuggin data center being put in a place it doesnt belong. F these things.
You and I both are on the same page. F--- these things.
The good news is that there is nothing to fight except the tax abatements. At least its not your home. And, at two miles away, you probably won't always hear the chillers and HVAC unless the wind is right. You will hear the low rumble that sounds like a distant train from the vibrating equipment though. You will see the lights though. It will be a glowing dome.
The bad news is that once the infrastructure for one of these centers is in place, the door swings wide open for more data centers, development, etc. That's usually the bottleneck.
In my county, we've lost about 9,000 acres to these and I think another 10,000 acres is slated to begin construction.
I don't know how to keep them from happening since we can't dictate who anyone sells to.
We can, however, take a page from the Republican playbook and regulate the ever loving dog **** out of them for light, noise, environmental impacts. And a page from the liberal playbook over environmental impact and fine the **** out of them.
If you had asked me 10 years ago "what is going to be the biggest nuisance in your lifetime moving forward"? I would have never ever ever thought data center would be it.
I'm trying to think of all the things that annoy me about our ranches and maybe a few nuisance neighbors on the rare occasion but never "a 200 acre **** box warehouse that ruins the peaceful evening and lights up the night sky for no less than 5 miles" just was not on my radar.
The worst part of that this land is lost forever. I fully believe this data center thing will pop, or at least in 5-10 years require way less space and equipment and then we'll be left with failing buildings and 10,000 square foot spirit Halloween buildings.
