What's going on at the Falkland Islands?

Been away from my phone this week and haven't had to chance to keep up with everything. From what I have read they found an oil deposit off of the islands and Milei wants US help. But the UK is hindering things (not sure how or why) and will not let Argentina go after the oil.

Seems there is a shift for the US to have a hand in as many O&G countries to put pressure on China. The UK is no longer an ally and hindering China from natural resources is a goal for Trump.

England should expect the same support they've shown the US as of late.

The Falkland Islands.

I'm having a flashback to the early 80s when I was in high school.
I don’t get enough credit for the things I manage not to say.

Lots of UK folks losing their minds that we have said we are neutral on the Falklands because apparently it is our duty as allies to scream at Argentina and tell them to back off. We should probably send our ships down there as well. It's really showing the disconnect with the US and Europe. Europe and the UK really don't understand that most Americans don't really care about them and the idea that we need to prop up their former empires for them when they want and turn a blind eye when they screw us over. They insist on us treating them as equals or really subservient to them because they can combine their little countries together and feel like they are more than they are.

The reality is we ask very little of Europe for what we provide and they weren't there for us when we asked. Denying us the use of their airspace was deeply insulting and they blow it off like it was no big deal. When you won't let us use your airspace or the bases we have in your country as we wish we aren't going to keep those bases there or at least in the size and scope we have had them. Screwing around with Diego Garcia was incredibly stupid as well. Europe is in for a lot of humbling in the coming years. Outside of ASML they don't even have much in the way of tech that's very important anymore as they have are being left in the dust with AI. We are also in the process of taking London's Finance and Insurance business from them.

Falklands is just the latest example of how the "Special Relationship" is changing and it isn't going to end well for them if they don't wake up to reality. Our incentive to help Europe keep their territories (esp in the Western Hemisphere) is basically nonexistent unless we get something in return. Bretton Woods is over as is the Cold War.

Nothing new has happened from the oil side of things. Oil was discovered long ago off the Falklands, the SeaLion project had been under development for over a decade to recover it.

The only change is Trump has been looking for a way to punish NATO countries for not helping with Iran and said he may back Argentina in ownership of the oil off the Falklands instead of the UK. Argentina has no real claim to the Falklands, it was uninhabited when the British discovered it and the country of Argentina didn't exist back then.

Guess the UK should have more than 4 functioning ships to maintain control of a far away island, eh?

Plus beware of asking Trump to gain and maintain any mineral interests in territories of the islands. Argentina would make Trump a better offer.

If Argentina wants it and takes it then it belongs to the .

There is no concept of "we got here first" when it comes to sovereignty. It's who can take it and keep it.

I prefer it be u see Argentine control and not a soy latte stop for the shackles, feckless British "Navy".

Exploit the resources to our highest benefit. The Uk and Europe is a zoo to go see what great men once built. It's economically and culturally dead now. If we can't use our bases there, we have no use for it.

Don't disagree but the UK has to protect their own assets then. We are back to the Pre WWI era of hard power mattering more than "International Law" that has been abused beyond comprehension.

Will the same folks that wanted to send missiles to Ukraine be for sending Exocets to Argentina? The Argentines seem to know how to work them.

What an interesting moment in time.

England will not be able to retake the Falkland unless they get real nasty about it. Even then that would take time. Remember all those foreigners that are now living and are serving in politics in the UK do not care about the Falklands.

If England was so keen on giving away a strategic Diego Garcia, they may want to trade for a few hundred dentists in exchange for the island.

This is a good point. If they wanted to give back Diego Garcia to the "natives" (there were none), they should be willing to give the Faulklands back to Argentina.

Yes. After the Falkland war in the 80s, put a military base, even if small.

With what? Their navy that can't leave port? With their six hand me down F-16's and A-4's?

The Brits have their readiness issues, Argentina is just laughable

Yep, a single british nuclear submarine would cause absolute havoc. Just like in the falklands war.

Argentina could focus on interfering with logistics ships, but their missles are almost obsolete and they don't have enough of them. They wouldn't be able to sustain it.

They achieve this diplomatically or not at all.

An Islam controlled UK is not the Ally of old. Don't care about them, anymore.

Also, libs should be backing Argentina, if they are the same ones saying the US is "stolen" land. Same logic applies.

That's good because they only have 4 and won't add to that number until mid 2030s.

Did a Keir Starmer correction for you. The Brits have F'd up so bad that it actually has come to this again, MAYBE. The U.S. might not give Argentina a green light, but they might also not tell thm to not invade again.

Probably exterminated by the Portuguese and Spanish centuries before.

I bet the refugees from Wakanda had camped there until the conquistadors stopped and wiped them out, taking their technology like cheap Chinese spies.
