I've stayed in a few hotels in recent memory where everything was x-rayed and you had to go through a metal detector, dignitaries onsite or not. A Sheraton in Algeria and a Marriott in Turkey are two that I recall. I always chalked it up to the heightened risk of terrorism in those countries, but we have a long way to go to get to that level of security in major US hotels. Way too many ways in/out if you're a registered guest and have a key.

I was a freshman in high school when Reagan got shot. My marching band was going to the cherry blossom parade in DC that April and we did still go. They announced it in school and then of course once I came home. It was all over the television.

I am not sure I've stayed at an international hotel and not have them copy the passport. Years ago in Dubai the hotel insisted on keeping the passport and handing you a copy back. That was not happening. Not sure if US hotels have similar policies for international guests.

The virtual key should probably be disabled when the POTUS, VP and number of cabinet members and other VIPs are going to be having dinner onsite.

I stayed at a hotel in Auckland, New Zealand the same night Condoleeza Rice was staying there back in 2008.

That place was crawling with local New Zealand cops. You'd think we'd have the same level of security when the US President is going to be somewhere.

When I was a kid in Saudi Arabia, they'd clear out the Intercontinental Hotel when Crown Prince Fahd or King Khalid came to visit my hometown. They'd kick guests out so the Royal Family could have their security detail protect them.

Besides the passport, they'd want to see your business card and to email them from your work email if you used a corporate code!
