Will be interesting to see how much this spreads and how people react…especially post Covid.

Hantavirus has a 30% mortality rate and until this month had never jumped from person to person (has always been animal to human).

I believe it has spread from person to person before but has been quite rare.

Yep, it has been transmitted between people but thats confined to South American strain https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7101103/

The cruise ship deaths have been from the "Andes variant".

The "Andes strain" as the one is called that is infecting the cruise ship, has a documented history of person to person transmission, but it is not like the flu, WuFlu, chickenpox, or the measles. It takes prolonged contact to risk spreading it.

The ship left Argentina on 4-1, and Argentina, along with Chile, is where the virus is known to reside.

According to the CBS news article regarding the contact case:
Quote:

The French Ministry of Health, meanwhile, told the country's BFM TV network a French "contact case" had been confirmed. The man is believed to have traveled on the same flight as one of the two patients evacuated to Johannesburg for treatment in late April.

And no Paul, it is not a new virus. Well documented and has been for a long time.

Andes variant has documented human to human transmission, its the only variant that does.

Having recently been to Chile and meeting several folks who were on cruises such as this one, I had a suspicion that age may a factor and it appears this was a polar expedition cruise so I would think it was not cheap meaning an older crowd.

Looks like one victim was 70, the other 69 and the 3rd undisclosed.

I don't know if the morbidity with Hantavirus is broken down by age, but it does say "in severe cases" and severe cases may be age related.

Just deducing.

Where are the Andes?

Quote:

On Wednesday the WHO confirmed that the outbreak is caused by the Andes strain of the virus, which is found in South America and primarily carried by a species of rodent called the pygmy rice rat. The cruise ship began its voyage in Argentina.

Royal Caribbean Labs/Cruise Lines...

They are a floating petri dish, based on the news articles I've read.

Also who the heck goes on a cruise. Being sandwiched in with thousands of people for days on end with no means of escape from those people aside from a small room doesn't sound pleasant.

Sounds like they need to offer free movies and bingo on that ship so those folks stop spreading that virus around.

As mentioned, the likely age of the passengers would make bingo a super spread event.

I have been on the sister ship going from Ushuaia to NZ. Although expensive because of inclusive helicopter trips it was far from luxurious. It was very clean and I would do it again. No balconies, just portholes so isolation would be tough.
Surprised Tristan de Cuna allowed disembarking. Limited hospital facilities and the extreme isolation could jeopardize the islanders. We were not allowed into the country during Covid.

Just keep it to the nicer cruise lines. Also, the destinations play a role in this.

I mostly sail with Oceana. I have taken some river cruises in Europe, and those are very nice too but again only do the nice ones. The extra money is worth it.

But some people just don't like cruises and if you don't, then don't go on them.

You couldn't pay to get me on a carnival or princess or Disney cruise.

But again, if people like them, it's their choice.
I don’t get enough credit for the things I manage not to say.

Hantavirus isn't Covid. I have a Boston Terrier that will kill any rodent that dares to wander into our yard. She has at least 12 confirmed kills between rats, squirrels, and rabbits.

I'm going down there in December. Ship I'll be on will have fewer than 300 total people on board, pax and crew.

There are cruise lines that aren't Walmart at sea.

I'll be the first conspiracy theorist to say that it didn't come from a flea market Skunk Rat.

Next: they'll change "it spreads by bodily fluids and close contact, like sleeping in the same bed" to mask up.

Now it has a 40% fatality rate. The elites and the government will use this if they can.

I mean, hantavirus is scary as ***** That's one of the ones you get and you probably die.

But you really need to inhale desiccated infected rodent crap, so unless you are in the desert southwest you almost never run into it.

I thought this was traced to a bird watching couple that visited a dump in Argentina on a bird watching trip before boarding the ship

Why do I believe this?

Some boomer cruise ship liking birder couple would go to an Andean dump that happens to spread a disease which kills a third of the planet.

Why not?

100%... that's all we take.

We'd never set foot on a ocean cruise with a zillion people.
