Here's a great story about Standard Meat Company in Fort Worth and their partnership with Pizza Hut.

Back in the mid 60's, Manny Rosenthal got a phone call from a Pizza Hut franchisee that operated a restaurant on Camp Bowie, about 15 minutes from Manny's plant in the Stockyards. At the time, Standard Meat manufactured taco meat using steam jacketed kettles. The franchisee wanted Manny to manufacture pre-cooked pizza meat. At the time, Pizza Huts made their cooked toppings on site, which was labor intensive and inconsistent. Manny visited the restaurant, watched the process, and agreed to manufacture 100 pounds of finished product.

Those first 100 pounds turned out to be a pain in the arse to manufacture. Manny approached it as a one-and-done. He took the finished product over to the restaurant, got paid, and left. About a week went by, and the franchisee called Manny. He told him the product was great and that he wanted Manny to manufacture two hundred pounds. But he also made a statement that changed the course of Manny's business..."You didn't charge me enough."

Long story short, Standard Meat Company became only one of two suppliers that manufactured meat toppings for Pizza Hut for the next 25 years.

Manny shared that story in 1983 when the Rosenthal Meat Science Center was dedicated.

Jersey Mike's sucks now. They cut the amount of meat on their sandwiches, slice the cheese translucent thin, and raised prices.

Best pizza/ranch in BCS used to be Mr. G's pizza in Bryan, but it has gone downhill since Mr. G passed away some years ago. Now, Rx Pizza right across the street seems to be constantly busy and Mr. G's empty.

And both just ahead of Jimmy John's, which really makes me question the legitimacy of that list.

Jimmy John's suuuuuucks.

I'm not sure I could make a more bland sandwich at home.

Only thing behind it would be Which Wich - absolutely terrible.

I'll take subway over both.

Yum Brands wasn't exactly setting the menu bar very high either Pizza Hut, KFC, or Taco Bell.

This is a strange post to start.

In my 20's pizza hut, dominos, papa johns, godfathers, cicis and the other cheap brands would get my business.

Now that I am making adult money, I go to locally owned family joints. Sure I spend a few dollars more, happy to do it.

RC's pizza in Kingwood gets a lot of my business.

What is RC's? How does it compare to Rotolo or Crust?

Gumby's for the win.

Had no idea Gumby's still existed till my son started at TAMU 2 yrs ago. Evidently, he and his buddies hit it up regularly. I hear they have pepperoni rolls.

I think Gumby's got started when I was there. Funny thing, you would see Gumby's pizza boxes w/ the 3 x 5 proof of purchase cut out in the crapper can. You could redeem like 5 of them for a free pizza. If I saw one in the trash w/ the pop, I'd cut it out.

To be honest, never heard of Rotolo or Crust.

What I can say about RCs dude is originally from New York. Pizza ingredients are fresh and they are very particular about their pizza coming out looking a certain way or they will remake it.

I got there, Chicago, deep dish one day. Owner didnt slice the pizza, because he wants the pie be picturesque for when you take home and not have a mess.

You went to Taco Bell for the food quality?

I don't understand people who expect sit-down restaurant quality food as a fast-food joint.

Fast/cheap/good, pick two.

Saw how they are going retro in some locations but the problem is they changed the food. Pizza Hut used to have a unique deep dish pizza with real flavor and fresh ingredients and it's been cardboard slop or gimmick pizza for a long time. I haven't voluntarily spent money with them in at least 20 years, if I want cardboard pizza I just get Dominos. I'd love to have them as a "real" pizza option though again but not holding my breath.

If you really like Pizza Hut, there is a book out with their recipes. It's $10 on Amazon, free on Kindle Unlimited

It has their deep dish pizza recipe, as well as their pastas and desserts. It also has Domino's, Papa John's, and Little Caesars recipes.

Taco Villa in Bryan on Villa Maria was worth the drive from Highway 30 area for me. We celebrated when a Jack in the Box went in on Texas right at Highway 30. Super tacos, greasy enough, breakfast Jack, sourdough Jack burger. Thumbs up!

I have very fond memories of Pizza Hut as a kid, but their food is absolutely terrible now. I wish they'd resurrect the old style sit down restaurants with salad bars and lunch buffets, but maybe that's just wishful nostalgia. I don't know if that would work any more since it doesn't seem like many other restaurants do it. But I will say one of the most popular restaurants near me still has a great salad bar and there's almost always a wait for tables. Either way, Pizza Hut needs to start from scratch with their pizza like Domino's did several years ago, because their current pizza is trash.

Up until 2-3 years ago ... in Plano (on Ohio) Dr was a stand-alone, old school Pizza Hut. They completely razed the building and in its place built a kiosk-sized building with maybe a few tables as a waiting area... basically a drive-through-centric.

No telling the $$$$$s spent on the raze and rebuild.

re: "private equity"

If I cannot say anything nice... then I will not say anything.

What I am hearing is that we need to ban private equity but people are too scared to say it out loud.

Private equity can be very useful and productive, when they truly know what they are doing meaning the factors that make a business model in that industry successful.

Not sure of your age but I was a young lawyer during the KKR years when leveraged buy-outs (LBOs) were a thing. Buying a company, loading it up with debt to buy it, then selling it off piece by piece.

If you have ever seen the movie, Wall Street, with Michael Douglas as the character, Gordon Gecko, you know.

Better yet, can watch an old HBO movie for free on youtube called Barbarians at the Gates with James Garner based on the true story of the LBO of RJR-Nabisco by KKR. Very funny movie BTW. Recommend highly.

Gekko, with two ks

Richard Gere as Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman was also an LBO specialist

ETA: You don't have PM, so have to include semi-related question here.

Just curious, did you read Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers? Do you have any thoughts on his section on Jewish lawyers dominating the mergers and acquisitions/LBO space? Was that actually a thing?

That cannot be a serious question, really?

Let me tell you something. Lawyers are both smart and dumb. Some of the worst business people I have known were lawyers. Caution, means not doing a full cost benefit analysis AND taking the risk.

Soo. people who have business sense, can do that. Gee. Many were from Jewish banking or finance families. They already knew Part Two of the cost benefit analysis and risk. If the sum of the parts were more valuable than the whole?

Simple math. ROI. Wreckable? $$$$$.

ETA: Not a Jewish thing. Just a knowledge thing.

I worked at DDs in school so I made them all the time when I was there (we could eat anytime we wanted there, even if we weren't at work).

So, after I graduated I did the same thing and made them myself. If I'd had a DD close by, I might have still done it occasionally because they sold the dough CHEAP.

The closest to me used to be a good 35-45 minutes away, depending on traffic, now there is apparently one 18 minutes away. Still easier/quicker to make them at home.

I found that using bread flour because of the higher protein content did the trick for me. I can make it with AP flour, but I don't think they're as good.
