What was the pizza roll place? Weren't they 50 cents each on a certain day of the week?

Jersey Mikes is doing quite well and is owned by Blackstone
Jersey Mike's sucks now. They cut the amount of meat on their sandwiches, slice the cheese translucent thin, and raised prices.

Jimmy John's suuuuuucks.
I'm not sure I could make a more bland sandwich at home.
Only thing behind it would be Which Wich - absolutely terrible.
I'll take subway over both.

Yum Brands wasn't exactly setting the menu bar very high either Pizza Hut, KFC, or Taco Bell.
This is a strange post to start.
In my 20's pizza hut, dominos, papa johns, godfathers, cicis and the other cheap brands would get my business.
Now that I am making adult money, I go to locally owned family joints. Sure I spend a few dollars more, happy to do it.
RC's pizza in Kingwood gets a lot of my business.

Had no idea Gumby's still existed till my son started at TAMU 2 yrs ago. Evidently, he and his buddies hit it up regularly. I hear they have pepperoni rolls.
I think Gumby's got started when I was there. Funny thing, you would see Gumby's pizza boxes w/ the 3 x 5 proof of purchase cut out in the crapper can. You could redeem like 5 of them for a free pizza. If I saw one in the trash w/ the pop, I'd cut it out.

What is RC's? How does it compare to Rotolo or Crust?

You went to Taco Bell for the food quality?
I don't understand people who expect sit-down restaurant quality food as a fast-food joint.
Fast/cheap/good, pick two.

Saw how they are going retro in some locations but the problem is they changed the food. Pizza Hut used to have a unique deep dish pizza with real flavor and fresh ingredients and it's been cardboard slop or gimmick pizza for a long time. I haven't voluntarily spent money with them in at least 20 years, if I want cardboard pizza I just get Dominos. I'd love to have them as a "real" pizza option though again but not holding my breath.

I have very fond memories of Pizza Hut as a kid, but their food is absolutely terrible now. I wish they'd resurrect the old style sit down restaurants with salad bars and lunch buffets, but maybe that's just wishful nostalgia. I don't know if that would work any more since it doesn't seem like many other restaurants do it. But I will say one of the most popular restaurants near me still has a great salad bar and there's almost always a wait for tables. Either way, Pizza Hut needs to start from scratch with their pizza like Domino's did several years ago, because their current pizza is trash.
Up until 2-3 years ago ... in Plano (on Ohio) Dr was a stand-alone, old school Pizza Hut. They completely razed the building and in its place built a kiosk-sized building with maybe a few tables as a waiting area... basically a drive-through-centric.
No telling the $$$$$s spent on the raze and rebuild.

re: "private equity"
If I cannot say anything nice... then I will not say anything.
What I am hearing is that we need to ban private equity but people are too scared to say it out loud.
Private equity can be very useful and productive, when they truly know what they are doing meaning the factors that make a business model in that industry successful.
Not sure of your age but I was a young lawyer during the KKR years when leveraged buy-outs (LBOs) were a thing. Buying a company, loading it up with debt to buy it, then selling it off piece by piece.
If you have ever seen the movie, Wall Street, with Michael Douglas as the character, Gordon Gecko, you know.
Better yet, can watch an old HBO movie for free on youtube called Barbarians at the Gates with James Garner based on the true story of the LBO of RJR-Nabisco by KKR. Very funny movie BTW. Recommend highly.
Quote:
Just curious, did you read Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers? Do you have any thoughts on his section on Jewish lawyers dominating the mergers and acquisitions/LBO space? Was that actually a thing?

I have skimmed five pages of this thread of Aggies waxing nostalgic for Pizza, and I don't recall anyone mentioning Double Dave's.
I miss DD all the time. Last time I had opportunity to get was at a soccer tourney in Austin a few years back and it ruled.

I make pepperoni rolls at home from scratch, mainly because there is no Double Dave's near me, so it is the only way to get them.

I worked at DDs in school so I made them all the time when I was there (we could eat anytime we wanted there, even if we weren't at work).
So, after I graduated I did the same thing and made them myself. If I'd had a DD close by, I might have still done it occasionally because they sold the dough CHEAP.

The closest to me used to be a good 35-45 minutes away, depending on traffic, now there is apparently one 18 minutes away. Still easier/quicker to make them at home.

Normally I'd drop a "Have you tried making 1000 pizzas?" joke here, but you worked at DDs, so you probably have.
I found that using bread flour because of the higher protein content did the trick for me. I can make it with AP flour, but I don't think they're as good.

Actually, the dough was made offsite and delivered. We just kept it in the walk-in and grabbed it when we needed it.

Time to start on your 1000 pizzas!!
The upside of this is two-fold: You can eat your mistakes, and once you get a feel for what is right, everything becomes so simple, you can do it in your sleep.

I made it numerous times for my kids when they were growing up. Made a ton of Peproni Rolls from it.
Showed them the greatness that is being the person making it with MORE than just pepperoni at hand like I used to be...Like mushrooms, onions, and black olives? Go for it.
