I will be in London from July 1 to the 7th, visiting my wife's sister and family. Our hotel has AC, their house does not.

Most hotels there won't let you set it to/below 68 degrees I believe (20C). They religiously hate freedom in Londonistan. If I were to visit again I'd avoid even getting on this site to avoid risk of being charged with wrong think crimes.

Hotel I stayed at in Morocco wouldn't let the temp go below about 80. Oh, it would "display" a low temp, but you could tell it was a lie. The other three Texans I traveled with all had the same issue in their room. We were pissed. Of course, hotel couldn't care less.

One of the foodie channels I watch is called Pasta Grammar. An American man with an Italian wife (now a US citizen). Her family came to visit and they tried to take them to Costco, her parents were very afraid of the A/C inside and flat out refused to go into the fresh food refrigerated section, even wearing heavy coats. They started to walk in then abruptly panicked and ran out. Pure panic. Ava was having a time trying to calm her parents down.

They finally gave up and just left without even buying what they were there to get.

You've never been to Omaha in June I suspect.

Nope. NEPA is actually really humid too, at times.

I lived in Oregan as well. I do not remember it being humid in OR which is a bit surprising given the moisture. I guess the air coming off the Pacific moves it out of there and dumps it here in the gulf states. No AC in my apartment. No AC in the Honda Prelude I bought up there. I don't think I even realized until I drove it back to Texas. One of many "what was I thinking" moments.

Im in camp "come and take it" for sure.

I live about as far northeast as you can get in PA. From around May 15 to the end of September our AC is on about 80% of the time; sometimes we need it a bit earlier or later than that too. We keep it at 76 during the day and 74 at night. So not sure where you lived, but our experience is definitely not one of barely needing AC in the summer.

Oh and I forgot. Some Europeans, particularly Italians, have been convinced that A/C causes them to become sick, literally will kill them. They are afraid of it.

Heard on radio Europe had 200+ deaths related to heat already with this "heat wave". Yet here we are thinking cold air and ice will kill yoi.

I truly believe Euro govs find it to be a feature when heatwaves kill off the olds so they don't have to pay for them anymore. Can't have AC prolonging expensive lives

Laugh at them if you want, but this fight will come to America next time the democrats take over. The nazis on the left would love nothing more than to shut off air conditioning in the entire southern United States and let the heat waves kill as many people down here as possible.

It won't happen overnight, but the next dem administration will continue to pile on the regulations like those implemented under Obama and Biden.

I always imagined that taking away guns would lead to civil war….

Taking away AC would absolutely be a line in the sand for me.

Euro govt folks absolutely want to eliminate as much of their native and older population, and to exert control over their subjects as much as possible in all ways.

I was in Europe a month ago. The places that had AC wouldn't let you set it low enough to cool the place. Unfortunately, the hotel in Munich didn't have AC. The other locations weren't too bad due to cool weather, that changed at the end of the trip in Munich when the temps were in the low 90s. There were not many places in Munich that had AC.

not true. many, including the one I am currently in, go down to 17 or 16. but they may not function that well.

I strategically plan my Euro visits around weather for this reason. Been burned too many times on nice hotel rooms or airbnbs without AC in mid summer. It's not Aspen or an alpine environment where you don't need AC.....they just act like it is. It just becomes impossible to sleep.

They don't have the energy infrastructure for all of their people to have AC. There would be blackouts 90% of the time if everybody got an AC unit tomorrow.

It's just one of the ways that Europe deals being with being so poor.

especially since free healthcare sucks anyways. Our braggadocious UK allies are currently dealing with this:

UK healthcare wait times are currently at historic highs, though lists are beginning to stabilize. The overall NHS waiting list in England is roughly 7.1 million, with a median wait time of nearly 12 weeks for non-urgent elective treatments

Emergency (A&E): Patients are typically seen immediately on arrival. However, waits of 12 or more hours for a hospital bed after an admission decision are frequent. [1, 2, 3]

Routine Elective Care: The standard non-urgent, consultant-led treatment maximum is 18 weeks from the initial GP referral. Currently, only about 60-65% of patients are seen within this 18-week window.

I managed a guy working remotely out of London a few years back. He had a simple toothache that turned into an issue so debilitating that he could barely function, much less work....because of those awesome wait times with his free healthcare. I want to say it was nearly 3 months before he got in if memory serves

There are places in the US that do not have AC. I lived in a really nice house in Northeast PA with no AC. A couple of weeks in the summer I was cussing the idiots (I say that with love, some good folks up there). But overall, not needed.

All that to say, unless you live on the Gulf Coast of TX, LA, AL, GA, or FL you have no business commenting on this subject.

Yup. In the summer at worst you may be trying to lower the ambient temperature 15 to 20. In the winter you're trying to raise it 80 and 90 sometimes.

Radiator units.

The way UK houses are built, is to keep heat in and rise to the second floor where the bedrooms are located. Windows are much smaller and few are even placed for cross ventilation.

But with row homes (they call them terraced homes) with neighbors attached on both sides, that's the reason for window placement preventing such ventilation.

I was in Paris during a 2023 heat wave. I want to say something like 50,000 people across Europe died. Same summer we had a record number of days over 100 in Texas. It was not pleasant anywhere. Every other time I've been to Europe in the summer it's been very nice weather wise.

IIRC, that was during August which is a vacay month for a large percentage of Europeans. So they were not there to check on elderly family and neighbors.

People really need to consider latitude when trying to fathom why they're having issues.

Almost all of Europe is further north than most people comprehend. Hell, I have quite a few friends in Portland OR who's homes do not have AC.

Worth noting, in raw numbers, more people die in Europe due to heat than people die in the US due to firearms. To be fair, per capita, the percentages of firearm deaths in the US slightly exceeds the percentage of heat deaths in Europe. My hypothesis is those above 70 years old have a higher morbidity rate due to heat causes, thus their deaths reduces the cost to the government that would otherwise be going to that age group.

The location is not necessarily the primary factor; rather, it is significantly influenced by ocean currents. The Gulf Stream contributes warmth to Europe, while the North Pacific Current brings cooler temperatures to Oregon.

It would not be a civil war
Civil War requires two sides fighting each other. The dozens of people that would be ok with no AC would be overwhelmed by the sweaty masses in about 15 minutes

It would be an uprising against the government that would unite 90%+ of Americans

I watch their channel, too. Got me ready for my trip last month to Italy. Funnily enough, all the hotels I stayed at had AC (and it worked). Even the two rental properties (one on the coast in Cinque Terre) had AC. I think the younger generation will make the switch, but the mental gymnastics they will have to go through to get there will be entertaining.
