Pat likely had as good or better QB development under KK than anyone else playing college ball at the time, regardless of the offense he played in. The Bears are simply idiots for passing on him for Trubisky.

Pat doesn't have his nfl resume if he goes to the bears or most other teams.

Pat is who he is because he has Andy Reid as his coach and play caller.

Pat's last Super Bowl win changed the narrative some. Obviously the match was perfect with Andy who deserves tons of credit, but Pat would have done well wherever he ended up at. Dude was destined to be a star with his genes and development including at Tech which I wouldn't dismiss. Why else did a stud like him end up in Lubbock?

I bet the Panthers take Stroud and then Houston takes Young. It accomplishes two things - you get a much needed QB and potential face of the franchise, and it keeps Indy from getting a guy who might school us for the next 10 years.

Hoping Young can stay healthy as I'm not convinced he can. Smartest of the three big name QB's, though.

I've preferred Stroud for a while but won't get my hopes up that Carolina passes on him.

Patrick mahomes was a known commodity. He was slinging the ball around for 2 years.

It's not his fault tech cant recruit/play defense.

Mahomes was seen as a high bust risk because he was terrible in the pocket. He held the ball rather than anticipating routes, then created pressure when it wasn't there.

NFL.com scouting report:
Quote:

Mahomes is a big, confident quarterback who brings a variety of physical tools to the party, but he's developed some bad habits and doesn't have a very repeatable process as a passer. Mahomes' ability to improvise and extend plays can lead to big plays for his offense, but he will have to prove he can operate with better anticipation and be willing to take what the defense gives him in order to win from the pocket. Mahomes will be a work in progress, but he's a high ceiling, low floor prospect.

So his bad habit and red flag quality became his biggest asset in the league

Yeah these guys are morons don't listen to them

To some extent. At tech, he would retreat backwards and create angles for pass rushers. He got much better at stepping up rather than back in the NFL.

Mahomes, Allen, Hurts, and Lamar are all recent examples of betting on physical traits. NFL offenses have gotten a lot better at designing to a QB's strengths rather than expecting a QB to learn a specific scheme, plus the rookie wage scale have made it better to chase upside.

Look at Richardson's completion percentage in comparison to any of the other draft prospects (past or present) you want to talk about. He's noticeably below everyone notable except Josh Allen. And Josh Allen is a gigantic outlier as a player who somehow figured out how to increase his accuracy greatly. That is not the kind of QB you want to tie your future to.

or don't be afraid to cut bait with the QB in a few years

and definitely do not give a second contract to a "good but not great" quarterback -- this is arguably the bigger mistake than drafting a bad QB

Definitely a concern but he's also hardly played. Basically one season on a bad team with a new coach. It's hard to find a similar situation. He's easily the biggest boom or bust of the QBs.

It might take Richardson his first contract to learn the game due to his lack of snaps in college.

I feels like too many are focusing on Richardson's completion percentage. He actually has very good tape as well. Daniel Jeremiah interviewed several GMs with established QBs, meaning no need for sleight of hand, and many had Richardson as the #2 QB. This was before the combine. Richardson also reportedly interviewed the best out of all 4 QBs.

There's a real chance he goes #1. The Texans will take a long look too. We won't be contending soon, so we can give a project some time to develop.

Doubt the full contract. If you don't see results by year 3 then you start looking to move on anyway.

Ok, I'm trying to figure this one out.

"includes a $7 million signing bonus, with $8.5 million guaranteed, a $1.5 million salary fully guaranteed for skill, injury and salary cap. He can earn an additional $73,528 per game active in roster bonuses, and has a $750,000 playtime incentive. For accounting purposes, the deal has voidable years from 2024 to 2026 if he remains on the roster the 23rd day prior to the start of the 2024 league year."

So why does a 1 year deal have voidable years from 2024 to 2026? I know it's for accounting purposes, but that is still damn confusing....also another example of probably why Lamar Jackson without an agent never signed with Baltimore, that is confusing as hell.

Nothing since he absolutely killed his trade value with the stunt he pulled after his booty buddy Jack got canned.

I imagine everyone was just waiting for the Texans to release him.

Guy is a loser of the highest order. Glad he's not the Texans problem anymore.

Damn tunsil ripped himself. Money hungry. Wonder if he got hosed like what's his name that had master P representing him.

Trading away Cooks is addition by subtraction. Can't let guys who quit on the team mid season stick around if you are trying to build the right culture.

Congrats to Tunsil on his deal. Between Tunsil and Howard, at least our new QB will have decent to good protection.

Good day for the Texans

Texans shed 1 problem and solidified their OT situation in a very good day. Pick 12 won't be an OT now so best defender available seems to be the choice. Still need a C, TE and Achane in the draft. The rest of the picks should be defense.

This team could pull off a worst to first move in 2023 like the Jags did in 2022. With the easy schedule with more than half our games vs teams changing QBs, 9 or 10 wins is possible with a good draft.

That's actually not a bad deal for Tunsil, so I'm good and it gets the left side anchored for 3 years with a new QB coming in. Grab one of the top centers in the 2nd round and we have the makings of a really good Oline for the next few years.

Also, Tunsil seems set on just doing 3 year deals then re-establishing his salary, which is smart, except this time I wonder if the Texans are good with that and letting him move on in 3 years? In 3 years we'll either been on the cusp of competing at a high level and will be able to attract talent in free agency, or we'll still be rebuilding and we can just draft a new LT, or we're competing and we can also draft a LT. But overall I'm happy with a 3 year extension, having continuity on the oline for a new QB and offense for 3 years.

I agree with the consensus. Tunsil is one of the best at his position, and assuming that we find a center before Week 1, the offensive line should be above average, and might even be really good. Should be able to run the ball and protect our rookie QB.

Cooks is addition by subtraction.

With a good draft, the Texans should be an interesting and improved team next season. Young or Stroud at 2, then defensive line, center, one of the stars of this TE class and a back to lighten Pierce's load.

At least the new QB won't get battered like Carr did, so that's good news. Still need some more offensive threats and defensive studs.

Excited for the draft.

Carr got sacked more times in a month than most guys do in a year.

Glad we got rid of Cooks even if we have to eat a portion of the salary. Keeping Tunsil on a 3 year deal makes sense. After locking him up I think pick 12 is going to be an edge rusher.
MaxPower

I'm fine moving on from Cooks but wouldn't extend Tunsil. After his shenanigans in 2021 I question whether he's a team guy once he gets paid.

You're about to draft a rookie QB and you don't want an elite LT protecting him?
coastalAg

Tunsil has already been paid once and still played at a high level. He is shooting for another big contract in 3 years so he should stay motivated.

I am excited to have a pretty good OL and Defense to support a rookie head coach and QB. Combined with the schedule/division weakness, this team has a decent floor already. Depending how the rest of the offseason shakes out, this could be a fun team to follow in 2023.

kind of lukewarm on the Tunsil signing.

the Texans won 4 games and 3 games the last 2 seasons with this "one of the best at his positions" left tackle.

how big of a difference maker is he?

at least it's only a 3-year deal
Texan_Aggie

The point of last season wasn't to maximize players, it was to accumulate as best draft capital as we could without purposefully losing. Can't really judge a team that is clearly tanking.
