Why in the world would Cal sell?

Y'all realize how much an NFL franchise makes? Even a crap one like the Texans.

And considering Cal didn't fork up the money to get it he's not in any hurry to cash out.

so Lovie is gone.

time will tell how much damage he did on his final day.

Caserio may be kicking himself for not sacking him earlier in the week -- to better ensure a loss to the Colts

I will add, for those who don't know, that when Smith's Bears played against Tony Dungy in the Super Bowl, the 2 men took out a full page ad in a major paper to share their common Christian faith. Unless someone has other information, Lovie has always been a man of integrity and a professional. Seriously, the anger and frustration should be 100% directed toward the organization, not Lovie.

This. Cal isn't going anywhere until he is forced out for some unforeseen reason. It's fun to talk about but it's not going to happen

He played to win that game as a f u to mcnair. When all year long he decides to be the most conservative at going for 4th downs. Then when there is 0 to gain from a win he gets aggressive and tries to win? Take his faith out of the discussion, was it a smart business decision to win? Thats the only thing that matters. The organization should get plenty of hate but winning that game did absolutely nothing to help the future

Wish the McNairs would sell the team and the new ownership group could find a way to buy the Oilers name back from the Titans.

I know it will never happen as long as the Adam's family still owns the Titans but one can dream.

For real. That would be awesome to have the Oilers back.

Cal McNair needs to sell and go back to his job of answering the door at the front gate of Oz.

The same McNair who put a wanna be FCA small group leader in charge of major personnel decisions, and got rid of the team's best player for a second string running back? Not Lovie's fault that he's smarter than the owner. He just pantsed him, Vince Carter over Frederic Weis style.

Dumb F***s.

Really don't give a crap about the NFL and haven't for awhile but this is a sorry assed franchise. Everybody everywhere said Lovie was the best guy for the job: right money, good experience, right skin color blah, blah, blah. Is this all Cal can do.

Screw 'em. Embarrassed for Lovie, embarrassed for the city but whizz on the NFL.
Peace for Ukraine!

Why do so many people insist on having the Oilers back? They never went to the Super Bowl and only reached the AFC title game twice. And by their final days in Houston, they were playing in a virtually empty Astrodome. It's now gotten to the point where younger generations have grown up in Houston without much knowledge of them and could probably care less. Why are they being so glorified after all these years? This is a train that has long since left the station.

Because they started in Houston and that DB MF Bud Adams took them away from us. And the jerseys are freaking awesome.

Because even when the Oilers were awful, they were at least interesting / entertaining.

Because even when they were losing, they were fun. They had characters and character. They had personality. And like Jules Winnfield said, "personality goes a long way."

Loved the Oilers growing up. Went to my first NFL football game with my Grandfather down in Houston in the late 80s and that was it, I was hooked.

You know, this reminds me of a story. I know a guy from Long Island. When we first met 20 years ago and were talking about baseball, he told me his dad's favorite baseball team is the Brooklyn Dodgers. When I started to point out that they're now in LA and NY has two other teams, he immediately interrupted me and said, "I know, I know. He still loves their Brooklyn days more. He hates the LA Dodgers."

This weekend, I was telling my 9-year old son more about the Oilers and how much fun they were. And it struck me...I understand what my friend's dad meant.

When Houston used to host Sunday Night Football, they would always show the stadium outside and inevitably the Astrodome next door. Collinsworth would always mention his memories of playing there and how loud the crowd was with "Houston Oilers" song/chant.

The Texans just never built a culture. Winning fixes most things, but plenty of sports franchises have developed that without winning big.

My grandfather surprised me with my first Oiler game in 1980. Monday Night Football and the Oilers beat the Steelers 6-0 when the Steelers were 2-time defending Super Bowl champs.

In 1981, I got to introduce Earl Campbell at an assembly at my school. I still have his autograph in my office.

I talked to an Oiler fan randomly in Gulf Shores, Alabama during COVID in 2020. He and I were both wearing Oiler shirts on the beach. He said something that has always stuck with me of why so many of just can't get into the Texans like we loved the Oilers. "The Oilers grew up into a real team when Houston was growing up into a real city. Even though we never got the big game, it felt like we were finally on the map."

That's a big part of why I'm embarrassed by the Texans. I'm a lifer Houstonian and they have my city's name as part of their team. If you're repping my city, I want you to at least be competent. Ah well, maybe next year.

The Texans were doomed the moment they chose the dumbest name in professional sports. We should have known then that this franchise would never be more than the clown show it is today.

Definitely some truth to this. Although I was a season ticketholder for the first 15 years or so and they had an enthusiastic fanbase just waiting to bust loose if the team could just turn a corner. Never could and now it feels like apathy has set in for most.

Really hard to build a fan culture without some level of success. There's gotta be a reward for that undying devotion at some point.

I was about 14 and was at that game too. Years later I had a company dinner with Bradshaw (luckily sat next to him) and talked to him about that game...which he remembered vividly for the same 2 reasons. The extreme level of physicality in that game (several players taken out of the game for injuries, hence low score). And Houston Oilers #1 song being played over and over. He said it had the intensity of a Super Bowl game.

It's tough to break through when one of the greatest dynasties in New England was often in the way so I don't fault them for that, but when you try to emulate said team it just compounds the problem. For all its problems the Oilers established an identity around its city and fans. Now the Texans, despite being in the fourth largest city, seem like it might as well be in Detroit for players.

Sounds like the early favorites to take over are Jonathan Gannon or Ben Johnson. I can't see Payton or Harbaugh coming to a rebuild. DeMeco allegedly isn't interested.

This coaching hire and drafting the right QB will decide Caserio's fate in Houston.

I hope somehow Bryce Young ends up in Houston. Sounds like a longshot unless Chicago falls in love with Anderson or Carter, or somebody else falls in love with Stroud. I don't want Stroud. I read yesterday where somebody compared him to Jared Goff. That sounds about right. Do you really want Goff 2.0? Young just has a higher ceiling. Young seems to be that guy who finds a way to beat you in the fourth quarter. Stroud seems to be the guy who can't rise to the occasion in crunch time. Who knows how this will all play out, but it doesn't just feel like the Colts will trade up for Young, we'll settle for Stroud, and get to watch the Colts beat us twice a year for the next decade? I fear that stupid final drive with a 4th down pass going in between the hands of the defender and being caught for a TD will live in a Stagger Lee level of infamy for all time.

But, it may not have mattered. I could have easily seen the Texans taking Stroud over Young anyways because...they're the Texans.

I am betting on the Bears falling in love with Will Anderson. The smart move for the Texans might just be to take him if somebody jumps them and takes Young at 1. Or trade down and get more picks.

Yeah, I didn't expect them to draft a QB. Just hoping they decide that they need Anderson. My big fear is Bryce goes to Indy.

Bonkers as it may be, I think we'll still have our choice of Young or Stroud. As it's been pointed out in this thread a few times, neither one of them have the profile of Trevor Lawerence, so is anyone really gonna give up the cost for the top pick to get one of them? Let's go through the realistic candidates who might want a QB:

Colts, really don't have the easy draft capital, and I can't see that front office giving up a crap ton of picks this year and next to move up.

Seattle,. I don't see them moving up with Pete Carroll running the franchise (plus they made the playoffs with Geno).

Lions, maybe, they have some easy draft capital, but I don't seem them trading a bunch of picks to potentially blow up the current team culture to replace Goff who led them to their first winning season in 5 years (and who actually played extremely well this year). Especially when those picks can continue to bring in talent to a team that has a winning record and almost made the playoffs.

Raiders, I can't see them trading up if Jeff McDaniels is the coach. He will hard sell his guy Stidham.

Panthers and Commanders, those are the two who need a QB as bad as the Colts, but they are in worse shape on draft capital. Either one would be mortgaging their futures for Young or Stroud, who just don't seem to have the name/brand recognition that you want when it comes to trading into the top spot.

You add those up and add them to the history of teams trading up to get the #1 pick and I think the highest probability of what's going to happen on draft night is that the Bears end up taking their top player and then the Texans have their choice at QB.
