How about that playoff performance by Trevor Lawrence?
Not sure what to make of the big picture there, with that awful 1st half. Doubt that act flies next week.

Amazing comeback, no doubt. Or epic choke job by the Chargers. Starting 4-16 with 4 INTs is still incredibly head-scratching though.

Also, don't look now, but CJ Stroud has not declared yet. Some rumors that he may be headed back to school.
Well good news, he just announced for the NFL draft.

Good to hear, because there is no difference between picking #1 and picking #2 I've been told.

So if Cal has had a falling out with Caserio, someone has Cal's ear and he's listening. Hannah?

Funny/sad how easy it is to believe someone has Simple Cal's ear snd is telling him what to think.
In yesterday's Chronicle Brian Smith made a one sentence reference to Hannah now being involved with the Texans. This may be as simple as she and their kids are tired of hearing the wisecracks when they go out in public and want Cal to get this organization on the right track.

So who is she listening to? The know-it-all husband of one of her best friends?

It's laughable to think this is possible, but it is possible.

Are the Texans set on drafting a young QB, or is there a possibility of the organization signing a free agent for the next few years. A decent one (QBR of at least 50) would cost $35 - $40 million a year and you'd be talking about QB's like Garoppolo, Carr, or Jackson. They are a clear upgrade over Mills, but cost a bunch more. Do you want to take the long and potentially misguided journey with Young, Stroud, or Richardson... meaning you want to be Jacksonville in 3-4 years? Or, do you get an above average QB off the market and address all other issues with the intent to be in the playoffs sooner?
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Hannah is very much involved. From what I've gathered it's just as much if not more than Cal.

Have yet to figure out if that's good or bad.

One thing to think about in the coming months is the fact that Stroud and Watson have the same agent. I'm curious if his agent would steer him in the direction of refusing to sign if he gets drafted by Houston. That hasn't happened since Eli Manning almost 20 years ago but with it could certainly happen again.
Ag_07

Yeah it's possible but what would his agent have against the Texans?

Texans gave him Deshaun a huge deal, he was the one who wanted out, and then they found a trade partner that gave him an even better deal.

If anything he owes the Texans a favor or two.

Do not do business with that agent if possible. Especially after he played the Texans.

That's the Texans fault.

If someone gives you what you want you ask for it.

That's being an agent.

going back to the danger of a defensive-minded coach...

we saw it last night in the Cowboys-Bucs game.

Tampa has 4th & 3 at midfield with 4 minutes to go in the 1st half trailing Dallas 12-0.

and Todd Bowles -- who we already knew was a terrible coach -- elects to punt.

just an awful decision. The modern game favors offense across the board. Cannot give up possessions -- especially when trailing -- in favorable down & distance situations

Interviewed Payton yesterday and Demeco to interview later this week.

I'm not sold on Payton especially since they'd have to give up a pick. I definitely wouldn't give up 1.12 and I'm not sure I'd give NO 2.2.

Saw something today about how there is only 1 Defensive-minded coach left in the playoffs, the rest came from the other side of the ball.

The least talented team can't afford to trade top draft picks for a coach. It makes no sense. Maybe they can trade Tunsil and a later round pick for Payton.

I get not wanting to give up picks, but on the flip side who's to say Nicky C will even draft anyone worth a **** with one of those picks. Payton has at least a track record of success to go off of, not to mention Nicky C's previous head coaching hires have been dog *****...

I'm no John Maclain Texans guru, but nobody comes to mind as being highly regarded and successful that Nicky C has hit on besides Pierce and he wasn't an early pick.

ETA: quick google search shows Pitre has been pretty good this year.

Texans are a joke either way until Nicky C and Cal GTFO.

I remember when Bum Phillips selected Mike Brazile with his first ever draft pick in nineteen semety five [wheeze]. I was in pure shock [wheeze]. You see, I was in the old Oilers Press room [wheeze], and the Oilers were looking to generate some positive MOmenahmum. [Sits back in the chair, and beams a big smile]. They actually had a giant trey of cheeseburgers [wheeze], for all the media members. [Takes a deep breath] Now you might not know this, but I really like cheeseburgers [wheeze]. I think I mighta had about 6 or 7 [deep wheeze]. Greatest day of my life.

I disagree. While I'm not 100% sold on Caserio, early results suggest he has done a fairly good job with the draft. Rick Smith could draft stars in the first round, but whiffed in subsequent rounds. Caserio seems to be the opposite.

Davis Mills should be a competent backup QB, and Nico Collins (when healthy) seems to be a competent possession receiver. Roy Lopez became a starter (although admittedly, he is a backup on a good team). Jalen Pitre, Christian Harris and Dameon Pierce all looked like good starters with high ceilings. Bad luck with Metchie, but he should be a good player if he recovers fully. Obviously, Stingley and Green were disappointments this season, but it's way too early to throw in the towel on either.

In addition, BOB/Easterby put the Texans in one of the worst financial situations imaginable for a GM. Plus, his star QB quit on the team and then disgraced himself. He has dealt with a LOT. I'm not saying he is the answer, but I think it's premature to say he has to go. The only things he has done that I don't understand AT ALL was hiring Culley and flirting with Josh McCown...I suspect the McCown thing was more on Easterby, but who knows?

Out of boredom right now I'm just going to make some guesses on the current HC searches. A lot of what I'm basing this on is taking the opposite of what they just got done firing.

Arizona - fired Kingsbury, offensive minded coach who somehow landed an NFL job even though he wasn't successful in college with Mahomes on his team.
Guess: DeMeco Ryans, young top notch DC w/out HC experience. Also comes from the same division, they want to take their opponents strength and use it against them. Ryans has seen a SF team be successful with several QBs this year, I don't think he's going to be worried about Murray. Picking at 3 gives them the chance to draft Anderson, who can be Arizona's version of Bosa.
Dark Horse: Ejiro Evero

Carolina - fired Matt Rhule, successful college HC whose team was never able to turn the corner. Historically college coaches fail in the NFL, but Tepper hired him anyway.
Guess: Wilks, after Rhule was fired following a 1-4 start the Panthers went 6-6 with him at the helm. Wilks has already been a HC in the NFL, Carolina has some good pieces but needs a QB in free agency to have a chance, they could turn the corner quickly with the right guy.
Dark Horse: Ken Dorsey

Denver - fired Nathaniel Hackett, was a former offensive assistant that had Russell Wilson and couldn't seem to score points.
Guess: Sean Payton, not rocket science, new ownership with deep pockets and has an organization that historically is a winner. They want the best guy money can buy, Payton is that guy. Regardless of the issues in Denver I also think Payton is a coach that believes he can win anywhere and this is a team he can see himself running as long as they can figure out the compensation for NO.
Dark Horse: Dan Quinn

Houston - fired Lovie Smith, old school defensive NFL coach with a long history in the league both as a HC and coordinator. Team played hard for him, but couldn't score points when it mattered and also gave up points when they needed to hold.
Guess: Shane Steichen, young OC in Philly, previous OC with the Chargers. Has an offense where Jalen Hurts has become an MVP contender, strong offensive line, wr corps, and rb play, this is basically the opposite of what we saw in Houston this year. As much as I want Ryans, I just feel like it isn't going to happen.
Dark Horse: Mike Kafka

Indy - fired Frank Reich, historically an offensive coach, first stink as a HC in the NFL. Couldn't turn them into a strong team, but that can be primarily attributed to lack of strong QB play.
Guess: Dan Quinn, strong defensive coach who also has HC experience, and coached a team in the Super Bowl. Had great defenses in Seattle and currently in Dallas. I think Irsay would have gone after Harbaugh but it sounds like he's staying at Michigan, with that being the case I'm thinking Quinn is their guy.

"Now before I answer your question about the Texans' total failure as an organization, let me go ahead and mention my next movie role. It's a period piece, it's a classic buddies on a road trip misadventure. There's mayhem, there's laughter, there's a hint of romance in the air. It stars three of the most iconic actors in modern film history - myself, the guy who played Cockroach on the Cosby Show, and Gunther from Friends. We're old college pals who get together on the occasion of the passing of our old high school football coach, played by Robert Redford's second cousin. None of us can afford to fly so we buy a Oscar Meyer Weinermobile and embark on a cross-country road trip. Now before I tell you who the Texans are eyeing in the 7th round, I'm also happy to announce that this movie will be my first love scene on film, and I'm flattered and honored to be playing opposite the first Lady of the American Cinema, Miss Kathy Griffin, in that role. Hey ya'll got any more of those cheese steaks?"

Payton to Denver seems pretty unlikely to happen.

For one they have no draft capital after going all in for Russell Wilson (who he'd be tied to no matter what). This means they have nothing to offer NO for Payton and if they gave up whatever it is they have then he'd be severely handcuffed in the draft.

Also the Elway/Payton dynamic would be something else.

It just doesn't seem like a good option for him. Hell it may be the worse option on the table for him.

Why are you even posting here if you had to Google that Pitre had a good year? Are you one of those guys that just wants to crap all over the team but doesn't actually watch games?
AustinCountyAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
because I have two toddlers at home and its very hard for me sit down on a sunday afternoon and actually "watch" a game for three hours straight uninterrupted. And after the Deshaun crap and Hopkins trade I lost a lot of interest in following the Texans.

I apologize for not being a dedicated member of the Bullpen.

I'm not sure if he had contact or interviews with any other team. I kind of remember NE not granting teams permission to interview him but I may be wrong on that.

Regardless Nick was on track to be a GM whether it be with the Texans or not. He was highly thought of in NFL circles and it was widely known that he would be a GM somewhere soon.

Again...If the Texans wouldn't have hired him someone else would've.
