I'm assuming Bill Lazor is some sort of cyborg.
Actually that is another sneaky good hire for this young team, he's been a QB coach for Washington, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati and an offensive coordinator for U of Virginia, Dolphins, Bengals, and the Bears. So like Shane Day (another senior offensive assistant), he has a lot of experience in the league and can help mentor this young offensive staff.

and that's why you don't tank the whole season, then decide to be the Comeback Kids in the 4th quarter of Game 17 ...

There is no difference between the #1 and #2 pick. Remember it doesn't matter so no big deal right????

I'm sure the Bears would like to move the pick, but they also probably would like to add either Carter or Anderson. If you're going to trade down more than a few picks, so much so that it takes you out of the first tier of talent in this year's draft, then the return has to just be ridiculous (i.e., multiple first round picks).

For this reason, the Texans need to have a great poker face. We have no idea what their draft board looks like, but if they believe that it's Bryce Young or bust at the QB position, go ahead and hint/leak that that is the case. That if the QB of their choice (whoever that might be) is off the board, they're going to take best available.

Because, if I'm the Bears and I really think I have to get Anderson or Carter, trading with the Colts might really screw them over. Trade to the Colts, they take a QB at 1, then Anderson and Carter go with the next two picks and you're debating over who is best in the second tier.

I would have absolutely no problem with the Texans punting the QB decision to next year if they think Anderson or Carter is just too good to pass and that second place in the QB derby is no real prize.

And, yes, just thinking about all of this makes me angry about the way Lovie played the Colts this season. We go for the freaking tie in the first game (I knew that would come back to haunt us), then go for broke in the final game and pick up every "miraculous" play we need. He really did his previous employer a solid.

I hold no grudges against Lovie for trying to win. Regardless of how we got here we are starting 2023 with DeMeco Ryans as the HC, 2 first round picks including number 2, and significant cap space. Houston needs make time to talk to Young, Stroud, Anderson, and Carter at every chance they get. Combine, pro days, in person meetings in Houston. Don't let Chicago think they can move down to 4 and still have the chance to draft one of the two best defensive prospects automatically. They should be sweating bullets. If Indy trades up to 1, part of me thinks it will be to get in front of Arizona. I could see LV or Carolina trying to move up to 3 to get in front of Indy. If Chicago wants to see what that pick is really worth they're not going to trade it until draft day anyway.

A great strategy for Houston is to let it slip that Young is the only QB they want and Chicago will miss out on Anderson and probably Carter if they trade with Indy. If the Bears want to trade back up to 2 we will take everything Indy gave them plus their (Bears] first rounder next year. Then we take CJ Stroud at 4 and go on about our business.

I don't think they will, but Chicago really wants to turn the heat up on the organisation between now and draft day so that they do.

I have a better idea. What if they just straight up called Indy and talked about trading down? Tell them that we're not sold on any QBs in the draft, we're happy to see who's there at 4 and whoever they pick and whoever we pick get to play twice a year to see who chose correctly. Tell them trading up to 1 is much more expensive than trading up to 2 from 4. Just confirm that Chicago will want more than what is reasonable, but we're very reasonable. Reiterate that Chicago isn't taking a QB so they'll have their pick of any QB they want at 2. Just really lay it on thick and mess with them, just to give them some doubt about wtf is going on. But when all is said and done we just sit at 2 and take the QB we want.

So Nick spoke today at the combine and I don't see any posts so I'm guessing it was just a bunch of nonsense GM speak with nothing new.
IrishAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Missed that, but looking up the combine I hate that they put half of it during the weekend. It was always an awesome thing to have on during the week, and if I couldn't watch during the day it was nice to have on late at night. But I have no time or want to budget my time to watch it on the weekend.

With that said, here are the highlights from Nick's new conference: https://texanswire.usatoday.com/lists/texans-nick-caserio-nfl-combine-4-takeaways/

Not much they're ever going to say going into the draft, but it does sound like they won't be looking at all to trade up a spot.

Indy has to decide how much having their pick of the QB is worth. Hopefully, they trade lots of draft capital to do it.

My gut tells me either Chicago doesn't trade or its traded to someone not currently rumored to want it.

The combine is going to be huge for the 4 QB's likely to go in the first. Young is just there to get measured and do interviews, but Stroud, Levis, and Richardson are all working out/throwing at the combine. Best case scenario for Chicago is for that to not happen and for everyone think that Young is the only one worthy of the 1st overall pick. I personally doubt that's the case. Everyone knows Stroud can throw and is probably the best pure passer in the draft, his athleticism is what will interest everyone. Levis and Richardson are the most athletic, they could both greatly improve their stock at the combine.

Where Chicago stands to get the most for the pick is if they trade out of the top 4, because by doing that they are openly risking the ability to draft Will Anderson or Jalen Carter. I think they could easily work out a deal with Indy if they want to, and they're still not at much risk to lose out on both of them though it could happen. But let's say the Raiders pick up the phone and they draft at 7. That's a spot where Chicago could ask for way more compensation because not only are they losing the number 1 pick, they are losing the chance to draft any of the top tier players in the draft. I think the Raiders are the dark horse to move up to 1. They have a legit group of receivers that would be a tremendous asset for a rookie QB.

Soooo... let's say that Chicago pulls a deal with Indy. It is assumed that Indy is looking for a QB. #2 pick is coming up and we can take Anderson but the Raiders call. Indy didn't pick their guy and they don't want to risk losing him. Are you willing to trade down to #7 and if so what does the package have to look like? Keep in mind that LV on has their own picks in the 1st-4th this year and 1st-5th next year. Does 1st & 2nd this year & next get the job done?

Right now I say no to that deal for just a second round pick this year. I'm still of the mindset that there's a drop off from Young & Stroud to Levis & Richardson. 7 also puts us out of contention for Anderson & Carter...though the Carter arrest situation immediately shakes things up. If LV calls to grab one of those guys I give them 2 options:

1st option: This year's first (7) plus their first in 2024.
2nd option: This years first (7) plus their second this year (38) and their second next year.

They are a QB needy team asking a QB needy team to drop back, I figure there's no chance Caserio trades down from 2 unless there's significant compensation and picks 7 & 38 for 2 isn't going to fly. We'd still have 2 first round picks this year but next year we'd have 3.

Carter's arrest likely eliminates Chicagos interest in trading down. Will Anderson won't last past ArIzona now. The Bears need to stay at 1 if they want Anderson. Carter is too risky to draft this early.

Texans just need to stay put at 2 and take their highest rated QB or Will Anderson, if he's there. And either trade down at 12 to someone desperate to overdraft the Tsips RB or draft defense.

The details say Carter was racing the car that ended up crashing and killing 2 people. his charges are both misdemeanors, but regardless it's going to look bad. SEC having a real problem lately of failing to mention that star players were at places where something really bad happened.

Not a lawyer but that seems like a teed up manslaughter charge.

If he falls to 12 I wouldn't be mad at the Texans taking him.

What an incredible haul that would be to take Bryce/Anderson at 2 then Carter at 12.

Wow, Anderson and Carter together would instantly change the trajectory of our defense in 1 year....assuming Carter doesn't go to jail

My thought is that given all the draft capital they have over the next few years it'd be worth it to take the risk.

Hell whether it's Carter or not the 12 pick could just as easily end of being a flop anyways.

Of course this is all assuming he falls to 12 which I'm not even sure is a safe assumption.

I guess it's a sign of the times...

but it would be a mistake for the teams drafting in the top 5 to pass on Carter due to this incident. (misdemeanor)

the teams drafting 6 thru 10 would be overjoyed and take him in a heartbeat
