Except I can't think of any we can get and this years draft class is weak at QB

I'd take a shot at Ty Simpson if he falls to a place where we can go up and grab him. But Seattle and Indy are good examples of taking some castoffs and building a competent team around them.

Wow, what a season. I thought the Texans had no chance to make the playoffs after the first 6 games and then that defense turned things around and made the rest of the year fun to watch. I'll always wonder how this season would have played out with a healthy Joe Mixon.

All that said, I've been waiting to see how CJ would perform these playoffs and he's just missing something. A good game managing QB who didn't turn the ball over and made the easy plays available would've won that game. I think the Texans are going to have to find another QB but it's going to be very hard to pick an early QB anytime soon

so now what's the plan at qb so the window of this defense isn't totally wasted? this crop of veterans presumably available isn't the best unfortunately. that said, assuming the price tag isn't unreasonable, getting someone from this group to start the season while hoping to win the lottery on a qb in the draft and pray they beat out the veteran eventually is really all that can be done imo. off the top of my head, malik willis, kirk cousins, famous jameis, geno smith, anthony richardson, mac jones, kyler murray, jj mccarthy, one of the browns 2 from last years draft, marcus mariotta… who am i missing? not the most inspiring list. im sure green bay will want a haul (assuming he's uber contract still) but i wouldnt hate giving willis a shot. maybe kyler murray grows up and needs a fresh start looking to salvage his career. maybe mac jones. the rest of them are mostly depressing.

edit: looks like yall beat me to it

I think this team could do very well with Mac Jones as QB… sign McDaniel as OC and run the SF offense.

agreed, he's another guy like willis that i'm assuming will cost a lot in trade, that'd be my only real hesitation. but who knows how the 49ers feel about the position going forward. they may keep jones

Stroud's main problem is between his ears. He continually makes poor decisions that are many times compounded by lousy throws. The fumbles last week and especially the pick 6 today were due to rookie level mistakes that he makes again and again and again.

If he was capable of rising above it he'd stop but obviously when you look at the last two games it ain't happening.

Some people like Caserio, I personally think he's meh. We're about to find out if he has the balls and brains to start unwinding the CJ Stroud experience and figure out how to maybe win one divisional round game before we are all back in the dirt.

Kirk Cousins intrigues me. They are probably eager to get rid of his contract (not sure if he has any guaranteed money left). Burrow is my dream but would cost the moon.

Time to move on. CJ doesn't have it and he won't as a Texan. Swing for the fences with Burrow or sign a limited vet, but it's going to implode if you ask the defense for effort with a QB that can't lead.

Also, we really need an offensive weapon other than Collins.

Defense was legit, but CJ torpedoed the team withb4 bad INTs the first half and we have no offense for a comeback.

Baker Mayfield is the obvious choice. Burrow is as well, but not inexpensive.

you're not wrong there, but i feel like of all the problems needing fixing with your qb, the between the ears problems are the the most hopeless. and my fear that i'm unfortunately almost certain will be the case is the texans decide to run it back with him to try and fix him out of some misplaced sense of loyalty and it ultimately leads to blowing everything up when it fails. at this point im happy with a weak armed unathletic but mentally equipped qb in the matt schaub mold.

interesting option- would you take tua as a stop gap?

The problem is they're gonna treat next year as an evaluation period and CJ won't be going anywhere.

They won't pull the plug before his contract is up. But they won't be drafting high enough for another QB.

They're on a fast track back to QB purgatory.

No, I wouldn't because I think Tua is concussion broken. So between the ears problem as well although due to different circumstances.

The only thing worse than having a terrible QB is having a terrible QB that you just can't admit that he is terrible and keep hoping he will be better. It's the hope that kills you. Texans front office needs to cut their losses and rip the band aid off.

Outside of Collins, who on this offense would you say is in the top 50% of the league?

OL - no
TE - no
WR - no, although Higgins and Kirk are serviceable
RB - Marks and Chubb are serviceable.

They don't need a top tier qb. They need a bus driver who protects the football.

and the bottomline once again...

the Texans need to get the #1 or the #2 seed

like the Oilers back in the day...winning multiple road playoff games (usually in cold weather) is not the formula

it's such a difficult path to the Super Bowl...and the Texans have failed to navigate it again

This was a relatively easy path to the Super Bowl.

If your qb doesn't give up the ball a dozen times (felt like it) in two games you're playing a backup qb for a spot.

No way they should give up a 3 for him. Might be worth a flyer but his problem is that he just doesn't like football all that much. Not a hard worker.

really? Hadn't heard that. He looked pretty good in relief of Purdy this year.

How about a 5th then?

i suppose it depends on your definition of serviceable, but both of them contributing basically nothing as receivers definitely was a big part of the failures of the offense this season. and as bad as cj has been and as much as i feel it's time to move on, i don't blame him for their failures. higgins especially struggled to get open all year when he got on the field, against coverage that frankly wasn't all that concerned with him to boot. hes even slower than advertised and for a guy whose strengths were supposed to be his size and physicality, he got bullied by stronger corners way too often. hes been a massive disappointment. like most of us i was rooting for kirk to succeed a little more than the typical 7th rd trade acquisition wr. if he was brought in to be wr4 or 5 then fine, but he was supposed to compete for the #2 spot as well as play a good deal in the slot. and i mean, he did get snaps at both but mostly by default bc the rookies didn't do anything to take over for him. i may be overlooking a game or two but i want to say last weekend was his first truly impactful game as a texan.

the patriots defense was as successful as they were in large part because they gambled over and over again that nobody in white was capable of winning a one on one matchup and burning them for a big play. and they were right. they're not the first team to show no respect to the wr group when collins is out, because it's a solid strategy against this team

Did we watch the same Higgins? He was one of the highest rated in separation. He was learning the offense but CJ looking his way instead of Hutchinson would've gone a long way.

i would guess it takes more than a 3 to get jones, especially if there's uncertain about purdy. maybe a 3 and a 5 or 6, but if im the 49ers im asking for a 1 and settling on a 2 (with a 6 as well if its a late 2). there's not a lot of good options for teams needing a qb short term, and he's arguably the best to some teams at least while still young enough to be a long term option if he plays well enough short term. either some team will over pay or the 49ers will feel good about their depth imo
AggieJ2002

I'd honestly rather give Mills the job from the jump next year. He knows the offense, generally takes care of the ball and has had some good moments.

Go all in on fixing the O-Line and get some serviceable depth options.
