I've got a couple modifiers, and stands. Really just need the light and will buy the trigger as well. Why the 600 over the 400? Just more power?

More power if you are competing with the sun, of you are using lower than full power, faster recycling times

Will be competing with sun. Was hoping 400 would be enough. Guess it's always better to have more instead of not enough though.

Do you use their wireless trigger to control the lights? I have some cheapo yongnuo that i've been using with an old manual monolight.

I have pocket wizards, but use their controller

Are Godox and Flashpoint the same thing? I usually buy stuff from B&H, but Adorama has the below that comes with a free Octabox. Can you mix flashpoint and Godox and still use the same controller?

Yes, adorama just pays to rebrand

Cool. It has a case too. A little more than I wanted to spend, but it'll pay for itself before long. Thanks!

This is probably not a question for a professional photographer, but would you happen to have any suggestions for simple camera tripod that can hold a cell phone and/or gopro?

I'm thinking about making a few instructional videos for coworkers, and need something simple but effective. Not sure if I'll use my cell phone or my old GoPro 5 to video tape it. It'll mostly be desktop type work with my hands while I talk.

Thanks! That seems like exactly what I'm looking for without having to buy separate cell phone holder to attach to the tripod. And not ridiculously expensive.

Any reccomendations on a print service these days? Picked a camera up fornthe first time in a decade it wasn't connected to a telescope recently, nabbed a couple the girl that suffered through my bumbling is really happy with( so am I) would really like printed, and inhave no idea who to go through.

On dpreview: It was a meh system, and could be angry at times, but it's sad to see it 100% deleted, there was a ton of info there.

Thank you both, ordered some yesterday.

Is mpb.com pretty reliable? Was looking at an inexpensive dslr body to have, I'm still familiar and comfortable with the canons, and have access to a coworker with several pieces of EF L series glass that I can borrow at will, just need to get his camera back to him. I don't have the funds to jump into a mirrorless system right now( I see yall seem to highly favor the sony) , and honestly my ability doesn't outpace what a sub 500$ used body I can attach borrowed glass to provides.

I have bought, sold, and even returned one purchase to them. I've been satisfied with the service. KEH seems to have gotten very proud of used equipment.

I'll quit chattering I swear, just shopping.

Need a lens for when I can't get loaners, opinions on the 24-105 f4? I've never handled one, seems like a pretty good deal when they can be had used in good shape for 370 or so. The 24-70 f4 is about 65 more, debating. I like the 2.8 I'm using atm, but don't need the 2.8 and they're quite a jump up for my budget

I like my 24-105 f4 though it isn't used much. I sold the 24-70 because though it was a faster lens, it was redundant for my use.

What's a good portrait lens on a crop sensor. I shoot a Nikon D500. I've got the Tamrom 70-200 2.8. Would getting the 85 1.8 even be worth it since I already have that focal length covered? Should I go with something wider? I seem to see recs for the 85 all over the place, but I think they might be best on a full frame?

Try with the 70-200 at 200mm first and see how you like it. The 85 1.8 is a fantastic lens and I use the 1.4 version all the time. But I also use the 70-200 for portraits regularly.

There are great lenses at most of the focal lengths. Really depends on your style and how close/far you like or want to be from the subject. For the primes, 35mm and 50mm will be your traditional. On a cropped sensor you might find the 50mm more versatile than an 85mm (which is a fantastic lens on a full frame). Same for 105mm macro which is also a superb portrait lens. I agree with the above, the 70-200 is a great portrait lens (one of my favorite lenses period) so try that! If you go with the 35mm or the 85mm, highly recommend the Sigma Arts. I typically only purchase Nikkor lenses, but these two are the exception. For 50mm, the nikkor 1.4 is a great option. You could also consider another zoom (24-70mm) which gives you a great range for portraits on a cropped frame. I originally went with the Tamron G2 but got a few bad copies so ended up going with the Nikon. Try as many as you can and see what you like!

35 is too wide for portraits, unless you are doing environmental portraits where the subject is a just part of the frame. Shooting portraits too wide is the biggest mistake I see rookies make. I have a photographer I have tried to mentor for years and she still tries to bust out her 24mm for portraits and it drives me ****ing crazy.

Shoot long unless the environment is a critical part of the storytelling of the image.

How are the godox trigger systems? I see great review on them, I was given a pair of 580ex( one is a 580 ii), and bought a pair of older pocketwizards, but the base 580 can't interface with one( no sync port), and the II can't function as a master off the sync cable( I thought I scored with these flashes... I know why he gave then to me now).

I was considering picking the on camera trigger and a pair of hotshoe triggers so both flashes could ttl. The godox light seem to be quite popular as well

I have the godox hit shoe mount controller. Been controlling a flashpoint speedlite and the godox 600 pro. Only been using a few weeks but I love it. Love being able to adjust on the controller.

Let's get some camera strap recs. It's entirely possible I left my black rapid strap on the sidelines in Humble a few weeks ago. Before I buy another black rapid I'm curious what some others are using.

Holdfast for nice situations, BR for sports. I also put regular straps on carabineers to easily click it on as needed with the Nikon strap triangles

Inwas watching a bunch of YouTube videos about it, I like the idea of being able to group them off and control them from the camera :-).

I picked up a used set of two triggers and the flashpoint r2pro( which is apparently the same as the godox, just a different brand from adorama, so we shall see :-). I've got a cheap set of umbrella stands for them, and will probably pick up a bowens mount softbox head for on soon. Not the greatest, but I've barely ever done anything with studio lighting, the learning curve is interesting!

The ones I have seem to work fine. I dont use TTL, though.

I dont know that I will(... I was just happy my diy pan light and the single flash/umbrella worked last night), I just thought it was a neat concept at least. Mainly just got them to be able to use the flashes I was given, and it seems like a system that I might be able to stick with long term :-). I think the used transmitter receiver set cost me exactly what buying another speed light and pocketwizard used would have, I figured I'd give it a try.

Have reccomendations on something to set up as a "test" article to work with? I use a hat on a flash stand last night, but would like to experiment before I have a live subject.

You can get a mannequin head off Amazon for $15. Get one and stick it on a light stand and use that to move around your lights to see how the light changes at different angles and distances.

With some lights, you can turn on the modeling light and move it around in a completely dark room to watch the shadows.

New camera day! I picked up this Nikkormat FT3 at a thrift shop for $5 last week! If you're an old camera aficionado, this camera has an interesting history and worth reading about. By all accounts, it has a terrific build quality. This model came loaded with a roll of film with only a few exposures taken. I'll either sell it, or park it on a shelf next to my dads 60's era Pentax.

First time buying a used lens (from KEH). Picked up the Nikon 300mm pf. Hoping it turns out to be a good copy.
