Are you a renewal or first time applicant. If a first timer, you have two years. If a renewal, one year. One you take your renewal class, you then have 6 months to send in your renewal packet.

ok, so...

i have several questions. i am going to get my CHL and i have no idea what it will cost. the class? and the license itself.

also, i have been trying to figure out what i want to carry. for my first purchase i am looking for something under $500, well under $500 in fact. i would love to spend $100 but i dont think i can do that... and still be satisfied. i am thinking i want something much smaller than most people seem to carry. looking at CHLForum it seems like a majority of people carry compacts or 1911's. i want a semi-auto and at the biggest a subcompact.

right now the front runners are the ruger lcp, walther ppk, and the kel-tec p3at. i want a smaller gun because i am worried about concealing it. i wear t shirts and sit for most of my work day. an iwb holster in the small of my back would be visible i think and i dont think i could stand having it on my hip so i am leaning toward an ankle holster. am i crazy or will i just have to see when i start carrying?

i should note that i havent held any of them and i am only "shooting from the hip" so to speak. for those of you that carry bigger guns, how are they comfortable and how do you hide them if you wear something similar to what i described.

i know i have asked alot of questions but any help offered is greatly appreciated.

tia.

Class...$75-100 for first time, $50-75 for renewal
License...$140 first time, $70 renewal

As far as the guns...Kel-Tec and the Ruger LCP are excellent for concealment, also look at S&W J-Frame revolvers. You can usually find some good deals on used ones.

LG,
When it comes to comfort, a lot of factors come into play. Gun size, gun type, type of holster, and even what you are wearing for clothing on any given day. Just remember, carrying a concealed handgun may "not always be comfortable, but it is comforting."

I was reading a post over on the Houston Board and it got me thinking about open carry. I know that there is a big group of people that would like to see it happen, but currently people are not allowed to.

Well my question is about open carry on private property. When I go into places like Collectors Firearms, or Top Gun all of the people behind the counter seem to have a side arm on their hip. Is the owner, or employee allowed to carry openly in any private establishment, or just gun stores? Just for sake of ease - I open my own pizza parlor and I want to open carry, am I allowed to?

Oh and my Ruger LCP came in. Can't wait until my CHL comes in the mail.

Stroodles...yes, if you own the place (or have permission from the owner), but who would go to a pizza place where the staff is openly packing? In a gun store, that kind of mentality/behavior is expected.

BTW, just got my LCP too...

This is not legal advice. I am not your lawyer. If you want to know the answer to a legal question, retain a lawyer. Having said that, I noticed this interesting provision in the penal code.

quote:
§ 46.02. UNLAWFUL CARRYING WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal
knife, or club if the person is not: (1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or (2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle
that is owned by the person or under the person's control.

You might retain a lawyer and ask him about your pizza joint. Sorry for the weaselage...

but who would go to a pizza place where the staff is openly packing?

Some of the best pizza I've ever eaten was in a place where the owners should have been openly packing.

I need to go down to McBride's and get on the list for an LCP. Nobody in Austin seems to be able to keep them in stock.

is it illegal CHL or not to carry a handgun concealed in your car and park in a campus lot

and a followup: say i'm driving on campus and cop pulls me over and i have a gun is he gonna go crazy its in the car with me if i have a CHL since i'm on campus property

W/ a CHL, the only way you are breaking the law is if you are in a building or attending a sporting event while carrying. Garages are not considered buildings; therefore, you can carry in them, leave your gun in your car, etc. w/o breaking the law. You can even walk around on campus carrying concealed as long as you don't enter a building (or go to a sporting event).

I have a shoulder holster that I use in the winter, but you need to buy a coat that is one size too large to make it work.

Generally speaking, though, I use holsters in the following order of frequency:

1.) ankle rig
2.) SoB
3.) customized fanny pack
4.) shoulder
AggieBonz02

What do you generally carry in your ankle rig? I've got an M&P9c and it's a little bit too heavy for the ankle rig in my opinion (it flops around too much). I don't mind it higher up, but I've got to practically wear bell bottoms to access it. My preferred carry position is at the waist.

The biggest problem I've come up with is carrying in business attire with a shirt tucked in. These tuckable holsters are all good and fine, but the clips certainly aren't very concealable.

Does anybody wear a belly band?

I'll carry the Ruger LCP in my pocket as soon as I can find one at a decent price.

I carry a J-frame smith (basically a 642 with a shrouded hammer) in the ankle rig. I have SoB/Fanny configurations for both the J-frame and the 1911. I only have a shoulder rig for the 1911.

its not against the law to have clips showing on your belt.

Indeed.

However, when carrying in a location where it is against the rules (but not against the law), I think those clips would tend to stand out like a sore thumb. Especially to those who are familiar with CHL. I'd rather keep all warning signs to as much of a minimum as possible.

have you considered something like this, with minimal clip showing?

Something like that might actually be alright. My only other idea is something with a single belt clip that I can then attach a Leatherman (or other accessory) to. I don't wear my phone on my hip and refuse to at this point.

My other option is a mousegun in a pocket holster. Better a .380/.38spcl in my pocket than a 9-mm at home.

I forgot to mention:

Dockers has a pair of pants with a cleverly concealed elastic joint in the wasteband. The concealment of the elastic is sufficiently clever that I did not realize what I was buying until I tried it on (after it was hemmed). An effect of the concealment is that there are two layers of fabric at the waist, thereby concealing the clip for a holster or knife.

I don't buy elastic waist bands, and I was displeased that I had bought this pair by mistake, but this feature has redeemed this particular pair of pants.

Has anyone taken the class at Champion Firearm in CS? Just wondering if you thought the actual class part was good or not.

I took the class @ Champions and thought it was ok, I mean it was a classroom, so as far as those go I have nothing bad to say about it.
