I posted this in another thread and got no response so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm wanting to get my CHL when I turn 21 (November) and I want to take the class ahead of time. With that said, I've started looking at different pistols just to get an idea of what I want. I know I have to be 21 to buy a pistol from an FFL but does the same apply to a FTF purchase? I came across this while researching the answer, and is there any validity (considering the source)?

Technically, yes you can be 18-20 and buy a handgun FTF. Good luck w/ finding someone who will sell to you though...

does anybody know of any instructors in the San Antonio or Austin area who do the Utah CFP course or will i have to go to Dallas or Houston to find one.

Anyone recommend a CHL class in the Corpus area? Wife and I are at the in-laws in Rockport for spring break so that would make baby sitting easy for us to go.

I live near Firewheel Mall (N. Garland/Wylie/Sachse area), which is NE of Dallas. I am interested in taking the CHL class. Any recommendations for gun dealers and instructors in the area?

I just sent off my CHL paperwork. I'm saving up for a handgun but I'm not so sure anymore with ammo shortages. I think I should go ahead and get a gun and just hope the ammo problem goes away (though it probably won't).

That would depend on the size of the class/Range and instructor. You should check with whomever your going to take the class with.

that's what i figured, i emailed the instructor last week but hadn't heard. we probably won't get to take it till this summer (he's in school) so i'll just wait and call then.

There were several people who did not have a gun when I took my class. The instructor had an extra gun that he let one use, and then the others borrowed guns from other people. I would assume that you should be ok.

You may be able to rent a gun from the range if they have them available.

have a Colt Combat Commander (45). Once I get my CHL, I will buy a holster from www.comp-tac.com

If you are in the Brazos Valley, you can take your class at Champions. They have loaner handguns there, so you will be set.

You most likely already know this, but the CHL class is not meant to teach someone how to shoot. I only mention this because your brother doesn't have a handgun, and people without handguns will sometimes not know how to use them.

Interesting picture regarding self defense ammo.

Probably a long shot but has anyone taken the CHL class at the Garland Public Shooting Range? It is pretty convenient to me.

Alright, I'm taking my CHL class tonight and tomorrow. Like normal, the class has the packet, finger print, notary, etc. included. Heres the question. I looked online and saw you can fill out the online application and pay with a credit card. I figured this would be easier because A) my check won't get lost, and B)it will get my application in the pile faster. However, I will still have to send fingerprints, picture, etc. after tommorrow. Basically, which do you think would be better, online, or paper?

If your online app says "processing application", how long does that usually take?

I sent in my stuff 2 months ago. How much longer you think I've got? 2-4 months?

I would use your credit card if you can. That way you immediately get your Pin to check your status.---Not that it matters all that much.

rhtexfish-- There is really no telling how long it will take. They are supposed have 60 days before they have to notify of a delay or a denial. But they are so backed up that they aren't really following the law.

Good luck... i got screwed on mine. Im now 110 days into it. My TR100 was issued to one instructor, but a different instructor in the same company actually taught my class so the numbers didn't match up.

So I was informed that my 60 days started march 21rst not January 2nd, the day they initially received.

I just wanted to drop a rec in here for FST Training out of Round Rock, run by Neal Fuller. I took my class today and it was pretty good.

His website (www.FSTtraining.com is under reconstruction at the moment, so bear with him. He used to teach out of Sportsman's Warehouse, until they got purchased by the liquidators. He is now meeting at the Wingate Inn at 79 and 35. Range time is at Red's in Pflugerville (big surprise there...)

Oh, and did I mention he is an Ag? Class of '99. Support your fellow Ag!

Heck, I'd even recommend him for you South Austinites (yes, you have to come north of the river!)

I'm actually signed up to take the class at Safe Shot in Fort Worth, which was recommended earlier in the thread - http://www.safeshot.com/index.asp.

I live right by the Garland range but could not find any opinons on it, and I like the idea of taking the class from police officers. Also, I honestly do not have that much experience with handguns, but the guy at the school said the class includes a basic handgun class and passing the shooting test should not be a problem.

I got an MIP about 6 years ago and have my license. I actually think that I didnt even note it on my application because I forgot about it. I would not worry about it too much.

I had two MIPs (November 1998 and another March 2000) that both went through deferred adjudication. I got my license in July 2008.

Just got done with my class and I now get to join the long line of people waiting for their licenses to be issued.

Anyone know what the average wait time is these days?
