Besides friends and family and simpler times, I miss being able to buy land that would pay for itself through cattle or crops, or at least not be for sale at 5 figures per acre.

I also miss being skinny with good knees, but I digress.

I miss the days when it was universally understood that the left lane was not for the speed limit on cruise control.

You should have been raised when and where that was a moot point. The paved highways back then were 2 lanes but one in each direction and those roads were to town and back. All the rest were dirt roads.

My first truck was an 82 GMC Sierra Diesel. Didn't get my first manual until a few years later. Have been telling my wife for 2-3 years that I want an old manual box truck again. My current "dream car".....

Really good thread….

Miss the days when we could get the boys together for a beer or fishing trip real easy. Everyone is too busy now or interest changed.

Miss my Dad and some others at the deer lease around the campfire at night telling stories.

Miss playing sports and not needing to stretch and recover all the time.

Growing up in the 90s was the best.

I miss College and all the friends I had in CS. I am happy I was one of the last generations to go to college before smart phones, social media and ring cameras became very popular. I had a flip phone all of College.

Can't believe Affordable brisket hasn't been mentioned.

.25 to .50 cent a lb.

Now you need to take out a small loan for a decent one.

Quote:

I wish a buck was still silver
It was back when the country was strong
Back before Elvis
Before the Vietnam war came along

Before The Beatles and 'Yesterday'
When a man could still work, still would
The best of the free life behind us now
And are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell?
With no kind of chance
For the Flag or the Liberty Bell

Wish a Ford and a Chevy
Could still last ten years, like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

I wish Coke was still Cola
And a joint was a bad place to be
It was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV

Before microwave ovens
When a girl could still cook and still would
The best of the free life behind us now
Are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell?
With no kind of chance
For the Flag or the Liberty Bell

Wish a Ford and a Chevy
Could still last ten years, like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

Stop rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell
Stand up for the Flag
And let's all ring the Liberty Bell

Let's make a Ford and a Chevy
Still last ten years like they should
The best of the free life is still yet to come
The good times ain't over for good

I used to sit on an ottoman most Sundays just off to the left and listen to him and my Dad (in the background) describe life in the late 19th and early 20th century, Indian skirmishes, selling whiskey to the Indians, growing u p in the Depression, 1920/1930's baseball, WW1, WW2, etc....he'd set there and spin yarns, spit his Blood Hound chewing tobacco into a High-C can cuspidor and entertain all my questions,,,. I loved that old man....

I miss an America devoid of Muslim terrorists and where democrats at least loved America and didn't want to destroy her.
Great post! Especially the bolded part.

I miss my blue 68 GMC pickup, a hand me down from my dad. It was held together with bailing wire, duct tape and Humble Weld. And the left rear fender was all eaten up where fertilizer had attacked the metal. It was a sweet ride on the streets of Pearsall.

I miss my 1994 Mitsubishi eclipse Turbo. My brother sold it to me my third senior year at A&M. I wouldn't have been able to go to my internship in the panhandle without that car. My old Toyota truck would not have made it.

Farm ponds.
I'm sure they still exist but I'm not near them anymore… basically stocked with whatever the owner wanted, no catch limits, no one else there, no rules or laws. It was awesome anarchy.

True, but even better, the days when there weren't any idiots driving 20 over the speed limit, thinking they own the road.

Watching Fireball XL5 on a Saturday morning before we loaded up the car and made the hour drive to our place on the north bank at Lamar (west side of 35) for the rest of the weekend. I swear I choke up when I hear Roger Creager sing, "the sun sets red over Copano Bay". Indeed it does.

Don't know what they are called in Texas, but literal ponds. This was in Iowa where I would spend my summers as a kid, large corn or soybean farms would often have one or two on property in the middle of 100's of acres of ag land. Maybe 100-200 feet across at most but always had fish. Don't know if they were natural or man made, but a big part of my childhood either way. Sunfish, bluegill, bass mostly.

Pretty much a "pond" or "pool" east of I-35 and a "tank" west of it.

Tanque in Spanish loosely translates to tank or what those born north of the Nueces call a pond.

Pearsall's north of the Nueces and we called them tanks.

Had a cousin passed a few weeks ago born in Freer and ranched near us in Encinal that claimed that anyone born north of Nueces was a Yankee. I came to this world in Kingsville so slipped in.

Great thread…damn near teared up a few times.

I miss riding all across town on our bikes with my older brother and our neighborhood buddies. I miss going to Winn's (a local, small scale Walmart) and buying candy for 10 cents each. We'd load up for a week with just a dollar. Skittles, starbursts, bottle caps, pop rocks, chicklets, nerds, blow pops, just to name a few.

I miss baseball card packs with a stick of bubblegum inside.

I miss drinking from a hose, and then never having to find a bathroom to take a piss.

I miss roaming the citrus fields by the house and hunting black birds and morning dove with our BB guns.

I miss roman candle fights.

I miss being a 10 yr old and just enamored with our HS football team. There was nothing I wanted to be more than a football player for Mission HS.

I miss making mix tapes for whatever girl I was crushing on at the time.
