Our of curiosity why not ask us, "the citizens of College Station", what we think before you spend tons of time and money on a contract for something that is 100% hated by the voters?

I'd like us to do more of that. I think every time we do, we have had success in identifying what the bosses prefer. Every time we do not, the outcome is not optimal.

I have a question for you. How do I update my signature block? please advise.

Can anyone confirm the size of this facility ?

At 200 acres would that not make it the biggest mining facility in the world ?

Currently isn't the one on the 100 acres at the old Alcoa plant the largest in existence ?

It's not like it will cover the whole 200 acres. City probably making them buy it all, since it will essentially be worthless once this thing is built

I don't care what the sunk costs are now. Walk away. The costs of the completed project are immeasurable. It has such a rippling effect for South CS.

But the council has to get a grip on the city manager and staff. They work for the council; not the other way around.

If I recall there is a decent floodplain in that area. Anyone know if any or how much of the 200 acres is in that ?

According to the FEMA viewer, it's just the area along the creek that runs behind the two neighborhoods. Plenty of space

I don't see the Pebble Creek Parkway thoroughfare on the renderings …

I think the electrical and water issues can be worked out. The buyer may not like it but their effect can be calculated and the rate agreements can be penal enough to give the city the money needed to provide the services.

The location was driven because the city owned the real estate and also could eliminate a major road cost. There are better sites for this than Midtown.

Go put this thing out at Gibbons Creek. Plenty of water and better access to power

I would be surprised if that hasn't happened already. It's a prime location with a lake.

I have thought for years that the COCS should not be in the business of dictating ownership of land within its city limits. Let the free market work!

BTW, Mr. Yancy, I do thank you for bringing this issue up for the attention of those who are most and most directly affected.

I think it has a lot to do with the council and staff dislike for the Midtown developer. Approving this sale will be the final nail in the coffin.

People have mentioned the residential neighborhoods and the senior living facility. What about Christ Church and the vet clinic/boarding facility right next door???

The neighborhoods have large retention areas. Woodland Hills one is part of the park, and maintained by the city. Spring Meadows is owned by Spring Meadows Homeowners and maintained by the HOA.

Space is not our issue.

Seems short sided to do something like this because you can't work out disagreements for something that would be better for the community. It's the definition of I'll take my toys and go home.

Is this where the midtown developer was talking about putting ah hotel and water park (with financial assistance from the city) a few months ago?

No. That is on property owned by the developer just down the street.

This is NOT on the College Station Midtown Subdivision property. This is the 300 acre Lick Creek Greenway located behind the subdivisions of Woodland Hills and Spring Meadows. Borders are Midtown DRIVE and William D Fitch Parkway.
SOCScitizen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The previously intended Pebble Creek Parkway would cut through the Lick Creek Greenway, connection the Fitch entrance to Pebble Creek and Corporate Drive next to Christ Church.
SOCScitizen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The facility would be closest to the subdivisions of Woodland Hills and Spring Meadows.

This is also way too close to the Langford where I have family. The noise from these type facilities will be horrible for them while also creating an eyesore from the 3rd and 4th floors of those residents buildings. Seems they would have a huge issue on their hands with us moving family to other "less intrusive" living.
I also sense noise coming to the other side of highway 6 where I live based on their diagram.
This is a bad location for this "money grab". Do better council! Would any of you live close to this??

100% guarantee nobody on staff, Council or mayor's office live in the effected area. 100%

Oh I know they don't. This the reason I asked "would they" ? Last time I was at a city council meeting and this question was asked on another city council "hidden gem down in the depths of a public agenda item" we were told yes only to find out that said councilman "used to" have a business close by.

Mr. Yancy, I encourage you to read the article that Elite posted, if you haven't already. Maybe it should be read to all of city council. It's an interesting read, and a very insightful example of what could happen. Thanks for posting.

That's just one of many stories around the country of buyer's remorse from cities and towns who regret allowing a DC to build there.

'We're Living in a Nightmare:' Inside the Health Crisis of a Texas Bitcoin Town

Quote:

n an evening in December 2023, 43-year-old small business owner Sarah Rosenkranz collapsed in her home in Granbury, Texas and was rushed to the emergency room. Her heart pounded 200 beats per minute; her blood pressure spiked into hypertensive crisis; her skull throbbed. "It felt like my head was in a pressure vise being crushed," she says. "That pain was worse than childbirth."

Rosenkranz's migraine lasted for five days. Doctors gave her several rounds of IV medication and painkiller shots, but nothing seemed to knock down the pain, she says. This was odd, especially because local doctors were similarly vexed when Indigo, Rosenkranz's 5-year-old daughter, was taken to urgent care earlier that year, screaming that she felt a "red beam behind her eardrums."

Quote:

Over the course of several months in 2024, TIME spoke to more than 40 people in the Granbury area who reported a medical ailment that they believe is connected to the arrival of the Bitcoin mine: hypertension, heart palpitations, chest pain, vertigo, tinnitus, migraines, panic attacks. At least 10 people went to urgent care or the emergency room with these symptoms. The development of large-scale Bitcoin mines and data centers is quite new, and most of them are housed in extremely remote places. There have been no major medical studies on the impacts of living near one. But there is an increasing body of scientific studies linking prolonged exposure to noise pollution with cardiovascular damage. And one local doctorears, nose, and throat specialist Salim Bhaloosays he sees patients with symptoms potentially stemming from the Bitcoin mine's noise on an almost weekly basis.

The site will probably only use about 30 acres or so for the actual center., The RIOT Rockdale site is about 21 acres. the one being built in Abilene will be the largest in the U,S, when completed,,,,,BTW, it out of Abilene off of I20, not in a residential/retail area,

I think at the time built, the RIOT operation was the largest in #computers and energy consumptiion,....it is also way out of Rockdale in a rural location at the power plant site,
