Why did the City buy the land in the first place? Where in the city charter does it allow the city to do real estate speculation?

I think it gets tabled tonight so they can discuss it more. Hopefully do their due diligence, meet again with the community members and then vote. At that point it will be close, but I think it fails.

He sure came off as such. Condescending, combative, and disrespectful. The "how dare you question us" attitude is so thick. As if citizens should stand up and be ready to speak in depth in less than a week when the city council has had asymmetric access to the data for almost a year.

I've got some expertise in this area - computer science PhD in large scale scientific computing and technical cofounder (now exited) at a grid reliability company serving major US utilities. It'd take me weeks to get prepped to *maybe* speak cogently and be well versed enough to answer questions off the cuff. Speakers tonight are doing great given the time they had to prepare.

Such a great point. Where is the city's due diligence?

Maybe a few folks on this thread who are unlikely to run for office, but would do a great job, could reconsider for the public good. I can pretty much guarantee you won't be worse than this current crew.

I was shocked to see council asking basic questions that should have been answered in a 10+ month contract negotiation.

Also they didn't postpone the meeting for a couple weeks so the city manager could return from reserve duty.

I was a reservist. Unless you are deployed or a few other things you can reschedule your reserve commitments (within reason)

They should vote to postpone. Let the buyer provide similar locations publicly so information on its effects can be sought from the neighboring residents and their municipalities on the effect of the project.

Page 28 of the 2021 City Charter says under the Sale or Lease of Property Other Than Public Utilities or Acquired by Tax Sale heading-

"The sale of land may be subject to
referendum or initiative for a thirty-day period after the sale and shall not be effective until the
expiration of said thirty-day period. If during such thirty-day period a referendum or initiative
petition is presented to the City Secretary, which in all respects conforms to the referendum or
initiative provisions of Article X of this Charter and the same is found sufficient, then the City
Secretary shall certify the sufficiency of the same to the City Council and an election shall be
called submitting the question of the sale of the property to the voters."

Based on the petition numbers this past week, that's certainly attainable. I think the turnout to recall some of these folks would even surprise some of us. The way Nichols and Wright thumb their noses at their own constituents is on full display tonight. I am extremely disappointed that these are our "representatives."

And if council ignores testimony from a medical doctor citing medical publications, they all need to be recalled.

We still do not know the familial relation between Charles and Brandon Schwertner.

It may be a sheer coincidence that these 2 with individuals, with the same unusual last name, are working on such a tightly interwoven project with a potential for large profits.

As I understand it, the negotiations were made by the City Manager and the COCS Economic Development Dept. There was a NDA in place during these negotiations so that even the City Council perhaps was unaware of the details of the contract.

Nothing about this deal passes the sniff test!

From https://senate.texas.gov/member.php?d=5 there is a section that says: "Schwertner and his wife Belinda (a Juris Doctor and obstetrician/gynecologist) reside in Georgetown. They have three adult sons: Carson, Zachary, and Matthew." So maybe chance, but still seems a large coincidence.

Th PE that's speaking now is doing a great job trying to tell city officials that we cannot provide the power this facility needs to function.

I didn't realize that the noise ordinance included an exemption for air conditioners. Jenn Zweiacker did a good job.

So Mr. Schwertner left the meeting?! Disgusting.

Almost immediately. I watched him walked out the exit doors of the building. I got up to talk to him privately to ask a few additional questions and when I nearly ran outside he was gone. It was like he vanished.
