Spoke to one of the builders for Smitty Ks old place. (Called the number on the sign out front).
It's gonna be a Paddleball facility- NOT Pickleball. I asked if it was going to have a bar and grill too and he said that wasn't in the plans for now.

The HEB at Texas and Holleman is going to undergo a $7 million dollar remodel later this year.

I was looking at the restaurant openings listed for 2025 and it's shocking! Nothing really cool that's new besides Tim Hortons! I was looking for a new place to eat tonight. Hopefully 2026 is better. We need a Waffle House or a waffle restaurant to open because that's what people want. We're oversaturated in tacos and chicken fingers. We need some business men & women in BCS that understand how to think out of the box instead of regurgitating the same old thing! It's so boring. I THINK IT'S BEEN YEARS NOW that this town has been asking for a Waffle House! How can you ignore this as a business man or woman?

Bryan Mayor Gutierrez was at The Republic last night with a large party that included two people who were wearing official Waffe House apparel.

I bet WH sent an official delegation to formally tell us that we're never getting one.

I avoid this heb like the plague. If they aren't adding a parking lot or a beur garden, I will continue my boycott.

Meanwhile CoCS staff is plotting their next major purchase of prime property to prevent a "certain types" of business from coming in, and to remove it from tax rolls.

Same! That HEB was there when my older brother was at A&M. And, unlike me, my brother is OOOOOOOOOLD.

I lived in Scandia and used to ride my bike down Park Place to the Long John Silver over where HEB is now.

Park Place was a different neighborhood then.

They did a renovation on it sometime around 10 years ago, they moved the floral department to the old books area and removing the gourmet cooking kiosk. They did other piecemeal improvements before and after, like using the old bank area for the curbside stuff, rearranging the produce department so you didn't have to go through the whole thing, and getting rid of some departments early on that didn't do well, like video games.

There was a water tower close to the road and a car dealership under that water tower which was Charlies for a short period of time. IIRC water tower was where the bank is now and the dealership was where the middle of HEB parking lot is. I could be wrong though that was 3 decades and a billion whiskeys ago

Dined at that El Chico regularly in the late 1990's/early 2000's. I don't remember when it closed.

I find it hilarious that you want exciting new restaurants and then get hyped up over Waffle House, but assuming that Gutierrez is at all accurate in his teasing there would probably be five sites picked throughout the city, not just Bryan. I do find the lack of new restaurants troubling, there are currently at least 17 vacant area restaurants that do not have known tenants signed for. (Yes, I can name all of them).

This reminds me of the Oracle's drum beating about how we DESERVED a Central Market and it must be some perfidious plot that we didn't get one. No it was just market research.
