I love the Hardline, though I do think those that muse so gently have the better show. I think losing Greggo changes the dynamic, but is classified as addition by subtraction IMO. My biggest fear about the long term future of The Hardline deals with Grubbs. Is it conceivable that he will leave? He is a master drop artist and makes me laugh 10 times more than the guys just talking. He has no match. Do you think The Ticket values him enough to keep him around?

Yes. He has no other reason to leave. He makes good money even though he doesn't need it. And the guys invite him to anything. He's a star here in DFW.

Does anyone know *how* they play drops? Because sometimes I don't understand how Grubbs can possibly be paying so close attention to a conversation and be able to add in a relevant drop INSTANTLY. How many drops are at his disposal...thousands? I can't imagine more than 30 or so could be at the touch of a button to interject so quickly with.

However he does it, it's greatness.

Let's just say you don't want to become a board op.

I've also wondered why listening over the internet, advertisements will randomly skip in and out cutting each other off, yet still finish perfectly in time to stay in sync with the live show. How? I've never turned on a radio simultaneously to here what's going on but it's odd to say the least.

the on-line ads are different ads than the over-the-air ads. The on-line "broadcast" is also about 10 - 15 seconds behind the over-the-air. Not sure the reasons why, just an observation.

Has anyone been able to get the Danny Balis Joe's crab shack commercial to play on the drop page?

It's #13 on the current drops page. I click on it and it comes up broken.

HELP!

So you tried to stream it directly from the site? Try right-clicking it and saving it to your computer. It worked for me.

i dont think Grubes would go anywhere anytime soon. I think they value his greatness. They might want to ease up on his schedule as he works those Sunday Cowboys pre and post game shows, when his best talent (master of the drops) isnt being utilized.

i would imagine he studies the run sheet and thinks about things that will be brought up and figures out what sort of things could be used in context. but still, to be able to act on it that quick is amazing. i hear them give hints to him (or people filling in for him) every now and then, so it makes me think there's just a database where you can search specific terms and it pulls up certain drops.

i loved it when he was ordered to quit playing greggo drops and they teased him and said "look, grubes has t-rex arms" since he couldnt play them but wanted to so badly.

How do you know this? See, I don't think he's making very much money. Maybe it's a lot of money for a college student, sure, but I'm not sure that he makes tons of money as a real-world person. I've wondered what is going to happen when he graduates SMU. Will he continue to do the Ticket thing for a year or so and then move on to something else? I'm assuming he has no on-air aspirations, but I suspect that he's an educated-enough guy that he can find higher-paying jobs than Ticket Board Op. (Not saying anything about Jer...) I wonder how long until he starts looking for better-paying, likely behind-the-scenes, radio gigs.

One thing's for sure. He likes his job.

Here is what I know, sterlicious.

1) As SoCalAg97 stated, he does a ton for the station. He works BaD radio, The Hardline, and he works the Cowboys pregame (not sure about post game).

2) His parents are LOADED (according to what Corby and the rest of the broadcast team says). They've stated before that he doesn't ever have to work if he didn't want to. Therefore, he doesn't "need" the money like some would.

I don't doubt that he doesn't make amazing money. But I would be very surprised if he makes little money. He is a crucial part of the station and I think that Cat and the others know this.

I believe you are correct regarding drops that are stored in an archive. After watching them do some shows in the studio by webcam, I could tell he had a screen where a ton of the more current/needed drops were on a touchscreen monitor and he just had to tap the screen to immediately play the drop. You can tell Mike & Mike on ESPN have a similar setup when you watch them play drops.

It's all done thanks to the magic of the Enco. They reference it often.

he actually has two ENCO screens in front of him. the ENCO is the system by which all the drops are programed into and then edited as needed. the two screens he has in front of him are both flat screen touch panels with a checkard board type pattern that each square represents a drop. for each show he has a screen programed with the most common drops used for that program. and all the drops are also color coated by use. and he can search all the drops (by the way the ENCO can hold 99,999 in case you where wondering)in the ENCO by typing in key words.

Sterlicious, I believe you're incorrect. The hockey play by play call that they had the other day was for a very low level hockey team in Ft. Worth, according to Bob. The announcer was going ballistic because of the refs missing a slashing call. The "radio announcer" was going wild and yelling about how there was blood on the player, and that was enough proof to call a foul/penalty.

The "somebody go, somebody go" quote was indeed Expo freaking out at a hockey practice, because someone didn't get on the ice during a line change.

They are two entirely separate incidents.

Interesting Pat, perhaps I've never made the connection that they're separate incidents.

sixiron

Pat is correct. The Ft Worth hockey call was a homer call of the week candidate 1 or 2 years ago. Expo was the "somebody go" contributor.

Expo made about $8/hr when he was board op. I doubt Grubes makes too much more than that.
