Whenever I open a tab, I usually make sure I introduce myself to the bartender and I get his name. Next I make small talk with him/her (a few seconds or minutes), so that there is somewhat of a rapport established. Lastly, I make sure to let them know that I am the only one able to place an order on this tab. (Sometimes, I give them my license and make sure they clip it to my credit card, so that there is a picture they can refer to. Although I don't do it often because of fear of identity theft.)

Not to say that by doing the above will prevent overbilling everytime, but I've found it has helped me avoid it more than a few times.

this is why i don't open tabs at busy bars. if i only have a credit card, i make them run it every time.

I've opened many tabs there and never had a problem. Did you consider the possibility that it was someone in the bar putting drinks on your tab...and not the bartender trying to screw you?

Like ElCheAg said, get to know your bartenders. Not only do can you put a credit card tab down knowing that you won't have randoms drunks charging drinks to your tab, but the better they know you the quicker you get served.

I'm hoping the buzz will die down soon at this place. I like the setup but the crowds have been ridiculous the last few weekends.

the DJ on Saturday night was god awful as well.

On two occassions I have been overcharged at bars. Both times, they agreed to take the drinks off when I contested it.

I bartended a long time ago in college. Very common practice to give your frinds drinks and mark the drinks down on other people's tabs. The other trick was just to mark up tabs, especially the people who were bombed, to increase tips.

I've always suspected that bartenders do this. There is really absolutely nothing stopping them from doing this is there?

Anytime I've ever had a problem with a tab, the bartender was willing to work with me. I definitely wouldn't have paid a tab that I thought was too unfair. However, I agree with the concept of the universe has a way of balancing everything.

If a bar ever tried to pull that sheet on me...

Not much that can be done. Eventually the bartenders become more brazen and people complain or stop going. Enough people complain then mgmt is forced to do something.

There are thousands of ATMs in the city. Use them and this can be avoided. I had this happen in college and now I use cash only.

It's a good bar, but I'd wear a dry-fit shirt, cuz it's hot as a mofo if you go outside on the patio.

Shoot....I even sweat through the dri-fit shirts. I workout in them and still sweat through them.

Then unfortunately, the Pearl Bar outside patio may not be for you. Stay inside if you go. Just trust me on that.

I'm the same way though. If I wear a button up shirt, I don't want to wear an undershirt because its more hot like that, but if I don't, I could potentially sweat through that bad boy. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

There are alot of busy bars I have been to where this doesnt happen.

The only (and last) time I went to pearl bar I heard 3 guys arguing about this when I was trying to order a drink which took me about 20 minutes to get.

It just seems to me that as busy as it was the bartender, after I stated to him multiple times, couldn't admit that he made a mistake.

He went on to say "what are you going to do about it?"

I almost punched him from across the bar, but figured I didn't need to get arrested over a bar tab that wasn't all that large ($) in the first place. I have a lot more to lose than he does.

I went to another bar, which I wont say the name, but I will advocate with my friends going to this new place around the corner instead of Pearl Bar.
