I love a good Houston board thread bump. From lurking the last 5-7 years or so, sounds like this place was much more of an online community back before you olds all got families and had to quite being a degenerate on the regular. Makes sense to me since back in late 2000s this would have been way more important online before mass social media etc that I got hit with during my undergrad timeframe.

Anyhow, I'm prob about 12-15 years younger than most of you regular posters. Hit up Washington and Midtown a ton fresh out of school in early/mid 2010s, and can say I had never heard of Pearl until now.

Washington has seen its heyday unfortunately. As has midtown.

I'm surprised there isn't any super old balls who used to hit up the Richmond drag back in the '90s here!

Sorry for the novel, just enjoy Houston history/development/all that **** and I like hearing you alls perspective being in a different generation.

HA.

Our first house was in Larchmont (2017 - 2023). Sam's boat is about the only bar left on the drag that isn't dark as hell. The older regulars back then are now the crusty retiree bar guys that have their personal seat at the bar at about 3 every afternoon.

My daughter got friends with another toddler in Larchmont through the nanny's and her dad owns most of the bars that have "turned" along that stretch (including prospect park). Super nice guy, but was a little uncomfortable when we were chatting with their family outside while on a walk on a Sunday and a black benz with black rims etc pulls up and he said "sorry, hold on a sec, I need to talk with my lawyers briefly" and two big fellas in suits have had a very serious and muffed discussion. Assume it was the weekend rundown of issues being an owner of multiple bars/clubs but it was just a funny situation.

Oh, we're here. But, I first hit up the Richmond Strip when I was a freshman & sophomore at Rice circa 1995/96 and the fall of 96. We didn't have to worry about fake IDs because fellow football players were often bouncers at places like The Daquiri Factory and Sam's Boat. We also hit the Gingerman and of course the Marquis. Kay's & Under the Volcano were big hits too.

I also have vague memories of World Bait (I think that was the name). IIRC, it was in the little Shepherd/Greenbriar/Richmond triangle where Stag's Head (RIP) used to be. I don't recall if the Davenport or McElroy's were there in the mid-90s but they definitely were regular spots when I returned to Houston in 2003 after a couple years on the East Coast after I graduated from A&M.

Clean cut black business man type, nice but private guy. Has a dorky first name too that is rare these days. His wife was always super sweet and went to Baylor. But can't imagine having to deal with the business side of owning multiple bar/clubs like Kamp (I do not believe he owns that one, but only dug into his properties once years ago).

Wasn't that the place that had all the centerfolds from Playboy as wallpaper in the men's room?

Possibly. I think Tavern on Gray did as well.

you're not kidding.

There's a lost decade around then for me. It started about 5 years before this thread existed.

It's amazing how much more I could drink with the stamina of my early 20's and a whole lot more body mass than I have now.

Same.

The 2 years I spent in DC from 2001 to early-2003 and then moving to Houston in March 2003 until moving to the burbs in late-2008. Drinking at home is a lot cheaper than going out.

Ha same...I am sometimes hit with hazy partial-memory-flashbacks of crazy nights from back then out of nowhere, and am a little disturbed. Glad we all made it out of that era alive.

Spent four years in the med center after Aggieland. God, some of those local bars were so great and, coming from San Antonio originally, Houston was such a blast.

Two Rows, the Gingerman, Ale House, Marquis II, et al. Not to mention downtown, Richmond places.

I really miss that time of my life. Houston kicked ass

Edit: Anyone remember the name of the place across the street from Marquis? Had a lot of fun there too

We did the Richmond Strip some but in the very early 00s I think. Could've been late 90s but I was using my White Elephant flea market fake ID. Outback Pub w/ the free drink parties before like 10 was in the monthly rotation.

I should roll up there (now Prospect Park) and say whats up.

When I moved to Houston in '04 and got involved in Howdy Club, most events were at Richmond, River Oaks, Rice Village, even that bar at the new Marquee. The Pub Fiction revolutionized midtown.

Across from the Marquis was just older apartments; I don't remember another bar on that stretch of Bissonnet. I double checked my memory on google streetview and don't see anything.

I'm not saying it wasn't across from the Marquis but if it was I never went there.

Lotta strong memories of Bar Houston, Red Door and Copa Room. Pub Fiction opened right after I moved away to Arizona.

Also dodgeball league in the parking lot of Outback Pub and those Long Island iced tea pitchers.

2002-2005 Houston was a great time for just out of college kids.
