I typically wear brown shoes/boots and belt everyday, so I ordered a brown strap from GO for my Senator Hand Date. What arrived is much glossier than what they showed me in the catalogue photos. I thought it would be more matte and comparable to the black version that came with the watch. I hate wasting money but I'm thinking about just switching back to black. Thoughts?

Beautiful watch.

And FU.*

Plot twist. So, my wife reminded me that I have my father's Rolex he gave to me before he passed away. The clasp needs a fix and the glass is a bit scratched up. This watch is not my style and Dad would've had no issue with me "upgrading". How would I go about getting this appraised without being ripped off?

Take it to Hal Martins and US Coin & Jewelry if you're in Houston.

Appraised and selling price are two very different things. If you go get it appraised, you won't get that price in a sale.

If you pm me the info on it, I can help you determine a realistic value on it whether you sell to me or not.

I'm assuming it's a reference 1601, looks like the bracelet is stretched bad, and I don't know if that bezel is oem or aftermarket. If this info is correct, this watch is worth realistically approx 3500-4500 and will need to be adjusted for the damage

Can't imagine that bezel is OEM but who knows.

Im absolutely not telling you what to do. I'm sure your assessment is exactly what your your dad would say.

That said, my dad also left me his rolex (one he inherited from his uncle). It's at Hal Martins to see if I can get it repaired.

I would absolutely never sell it. Every time I see it, I think of my dad. Every time I wear it, it's like spending the day with my dad.

I would just suggest taking a minute and really think whether you want to sell that watch. Even if it just stays in the watch case.

Maybe you can get that watch modified a bit to fit your style? It will hurt resale, but who cares? You aren't selling it anyway.

No one understands you better than you.

I see why some would want you to keep it, a pass down in the family. Our memories with our loved ones go beyond objects. If you truly want to upgrade then go with your gut and get something nicer.

Appreciate all the thoughts. I'll likely buy a Datejust but more modern and updated. Trust me, I'm always thinking and reminded of my dad. He is why I mow my own yard, change my own oil and work hard at things in general. I'm always telling my kids, grandpa taught me this or I learned from him that and that's when I think of him the most. I won't need a watch to remind me of him but I totally understand where you are coming from.

As Therapist said, no one knows you better than you.

While i have the same thoughts and feelings about my dad, there is just something different (to me) about having something that was so personal to him. (My dad wore his everyday for years, when I think of him, he is wearing it. That may not be the case for you, so it will hit different).

Good luck on your decision!

I think a new watch can remind you of him just as much because it was his watch that rolled into your new one. I'm sure you have plenty of other objects from him and you can only keep so many. My wife was extremely close with her grandmother who passed a couple of years back. It's been a very sensitive battle getting her to let go as she initially took in nearly a household worth of stuff (and we already had more than enough in our own household). Thankfully she's been able to cope with letting go most of it now and only holding on to a fraction. Your old man would want you to have your dream watch I'm sure, whether his or a new one.

Haha yep. To be fair I was traveling globally for work when I bought it. Luckily I don't really have to leave central time anymore.

Bought myself a souvenir to celebrate the grand opening of my new company in Kezad, UAE.

It's a Chronomat GMT 40 with Arabic numerals. It's a 1/300 for the Gulf states, and the teal dial is absolutely beautiful.

That dial with those Arabic numbers is very cool!

My potato cam didn't capture the aquamarine/teal of the dial very well. It's a gorgeous sunburst color, looks just like the color of the ocean here.

This pic does a little better justice
