I love Taste of Texas. But I don't see how it could be considered the best in town.
I could see it maybe when people factor the appetizers/sides in, depending on their preference. I agree that it is not quite on par with Pappas or Del Friscos though.

One place I haven't seen mentioned yet that doesn't get the respect it deserves (and probably not in the running for best in town, but I'll mention it anyway) is Jonathan's the Rub. Went tonight. The rib and I shared a big double cut pork chop. When you split a meal there they charge you but they give you a second side and a second salad. Mashed Yukon gold garlic potatoes were awesome, Greek salad was on point. Meatball app was good too.

Their steaks are really very good and their wine list is very reasonably priced (for restaurant prices).

Deserves the blue parachute in the rough award.
Jonathan's is one of my favorite restaurants. I remember when he was first getting started he was only in the corner of that building, and now he has pretty much taken it over. I used to work across the street and hit that place for lunch regularly.

He's grown his menu over time and I've always enjoyed great food over there.

If you haven't tried the Julio soup, you're missing out. I'm not a big fan of soup, but it's one of my favorite local dishes.

Try again. They used to be at another location and offered horse drawn carriage rides at Christmas time.

We used to have field trips from Katy to Taste of Texas. They had some "Texas Museum" thing going IIRC.

We all got half a hamburger.

20+ years ago that area still had fields around it.

My wife did that as a field trip and still remembers getting mozeralla sticks and chicken fingers. Genius way for them to give back and get kids wanting to come back with their parents. For years after their family would go there for birthdays.

Since your girlfriend is moving to Houston, I suspect you are looking for steakhouse that are both romantic and somewhat representative of Houston.

I would suggest the following:

1. The Palm - been in Houston forever, fairly romantic, perfect service. Steaks are very passable.
2. Pappas - Houston pedigree, beautiful interior, romantic, good food. I find it to be a little loud.
3. Brenners on Bayou - Houston pedigree, beautiful interior, great view, romantic. Relatively passable food.

Just a couple different ideas.

I'll second the Palm. They have gone downhill since the remodel but service is still always great with a casual high end atmosphere. We love it for the full lobsters. Take the lady and split a steak/lobster. You won't regret it.

If you want local only then I think Pappas gets my vote. We were at the downtown location Sunday and it was great.

I'll also second that Steak 48 is overrated. The raw bar is excellent and the sides were very creative and delicious. Had the bone-in ribeye and it seemed a bit tougher than a good prime steak and seasoned strangely. I would still try it again just to verify.

I will also say I'm a big Perrys fan with the caveat that we frequent the one in Champions which is significantly better than any other I've been to. Their wine list is pretty weak but cocktails and food are excellent.

I think most folks would call it local. Started and headquartered here and 3 total locations all in Texas. Compare that to some of the competition like Flemings, Mortons or Capital Grille that you could grab in any decent sized city with 50-100 locations each

OP, Steak and Ale has been gone for years now. Might as well not waste your money on any other establishment.

Good thing for me I have, and it's still outstanding.

If it's not, your life must truly suck to live in a world where pretty much everything is average at best. Really, the need to try to one up everybody on the board is amazing at times.

That's the way TexAgs is...a bunch of food snobs who have a dick measuring contest with their light switches.

- "<insert restaurant here> sucks! I can cook a better <insert item here> than they can and almost any place in this city." It's really over the top when they talk about "having to eat" a burger from Burger King or McDonalds. They try to describe it as tasting almost as bad as a dog turd that's spent a week floating in cat piss. First, you're the one that chose to go there. Very few towns have only one of those as an option. If you went there because of your wife and kids, congratulations, you're a ***** who is hauled around by your ball sac. If you hate it that much, pull into the Stop-n-Rob and grab yourself a Snickers and some Funyuns Second, if you go there expecting a friggin' gourmet burger, you're a ****ing idiot that probably should be reading the tags on hair driers and other electrical ***** People can't seem to manage their expectations when they eat at a fast food place. It's quite comical.

- "<insert restaurant that nobody has heard of here> is the best place to get <insert item here>. I've been going there for 13 years (they've only been open 9 months) and have never been disappointed." <FF a year and the restaurant is now profitable and not at risk of closing up shop every morning when they buy their ingredients> "That place sucks! Their <insert item here> tastes like it came out of an expired can found in the lost inventory section of the Brookshire's in Malakoff, TX. They were much better back in 2009 when I started going there."

Yes. And I have fond memories of their broccoli bites.

Tried the monte cristo at Cheddars once...so disappointing compared to Bennigans. Bread was way too spongy. And I kind of like Cheddars for what it is.

No butthurt here vato, just don't understand the need to sound so awesome that everything is "average" and "underhwelming" or whatever other term is used to sound baller and make you seem as if you are better than mortal men.

I enjoy the sht out of things - hell, had a badass steak at lowly Salt Grass not too long ago. I'm clearly not on your level of food critic stardom though, and I admit that.

But you did forget the standard "<insert restaurant here> used to be good, but their quality has really gone downhill in the last few years since I stopped going. They won't be in business much longer and have been surpassed by <insert new super awesome swanky neighborhood joint here> that is now on my regular rotation".

So, I have to deduct a few points for such an obvious swing and a miss.

One of the downsides to living ITL is that it can occasionally turn even the most red blooded men into pretentious limp wristed eunuchs. There is just such a high concentration of people of "alternate lifestyles" and pansy ass Beto voters ITL that it is bound to rub off on a few normal every day people over time.

That was addressed in point 2. They stopped going because other people found out about it and actually gave it business, thus making it profitable. Since it was no longer unique, Snob assumes the quality must have gone downhill because the masses like chitty food while Snob's palate is only graced with the best of the best of any particular item. Now that the business is successful, Snob will then move onto some other struggling place and claim it's the best in town.
