I just witnessed an older model Mazda with paper plates do some insane Vin Diesel fast and furious crap.

It was unbelievably scary.

This might be self-selection/selection bias, but the Houston area has some of if not the worst drivers in the country.

https://www.forbes.com/advisor/car-insurance/worst-drivers-by-city/

According to the stats

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico, tops the list of cities with the worst drivers, followed by Memphis, Tennessee; Detroit, Michigan; Tucson, Arizona; and Kansas City, Missouri.

Nope. Austin and Charlotte have Houston beat.

I'd rank NOLA worse than ABQ. Maybe it's the horrible NOLA roads, but they can't drive for sh*t there.

We drive fast here, but if you think we are the worst, you have many done much driving in other big cities.

Agree with NOLA being worse. They somehow drive 20 mph slower than us and still run into each other constantly.

Everyone in Houston becomes Helio Castroneves the second they get behind the wheel.

I also witnessed a very scary trend over the last couple of years on the news.

People have started to randomly get out of their car and shoot people on the freeway.

So I would say road rage is getting worse in Houston.

It doesn't help that San Antonio is laid out in such a squirrelly fashion.

In Houston, there are two types of drivers: predators and prey. If you're not sure which one you are, then you're the prey.

Dashcams. Get them.

With people being complete asshats, you need it to work with your own insurance.

My dad lived in NOLA from ~71-75 and he got hit like 4-5 times in that span. And this was a Co-Op, so he wasn't 100% there the whole time. LIke semester on, semester off arrangement.

Most of NOLA was using accidents as 100% insurance fraud. Like never touch the brakes and hit people. He said it was unreal. And that's back in the 70's. All the times I've been back, it hasn't changed any.

Most dangerous - yes
Worst - somewhere in CA (most women licensed drivers)

It can suck having to decide which is worse: following someone closer than i want or leaving room just so some ass hat can sneak in front of me and likely make it even more dangerous.

This is beautiful. Bravo.

I LOLed.

I've always said Houston is the maximum mix of offensive and defensive driving every time you get behind the wheel. If you're not prepared then that's on you.

The rest of us got somewhere to be and we'll ride the tide however it's taking us to get there.

I have Vantrue brand. Make sure it has a capacitor and not batteries to deal with TX heat. Mine doesn't have an app, just a memory card you have to remove and plug I to your pc. Front and rear, no inside cabin cam, however it does record internal audio.

Also, you need to look up your make/model/year and find out if there are restrictions on placement as thus may impact the type of device you buy. So many cars have windshield sensors.

Charlotte????? Come on man!!!!! I lived in Charlotte for a couple of years and it felt like they didn't even had "freeways"!!! Loved my time there.
This was back in 95-96 though.

I find this last part problematic. For various reasons.

I would only want audio during a police stop, which - miraculously - I haven't had in roughly a decade.

Houston has never created the worst drivers. We import the worst drivers.

Think about, at any point on 610 you've got a grandma from Beijing squinting over her steering wheel, next to Juan from Guatemala in a chicken-wired '86 F350 pulling a trailer full of lawn equipment, next to Leroy from Nawlins in a '02 Buick with swangers, next to Avner in a Land Rover rage honking at 18yr old Martha in a Tercel with Anime stickers covering the back window who's behind Becky in a white Lexus SUV driving with the heel of her hand in two lanes scrolling Tik Tok while sipping a half-caff soy chai latte with the other hand.

Sh**. Show.

I would add Kia drivers but otherwise a very solid list.

There may be a setting to turn it off. Never looked or tried. When I brought my video in of the hit and run I stripped the audio out. They didn't even ask if it recorded.

The slowest driving city i ever lived in.
No one knows what the left lane is for.
Every time i go back i'm astounded at how badly traffic moves there.

Survival of the fittest. But i create extra space for Nissans, Kias and Challengers/chargers. They are never up to no good especially with paper tags.

Yeah any car with paper tags that isn't a new vehicle I assume is someone without insurance and get the hell away from them. I drive from the woodlands to memorial park area every day for work so it's either I45 or Hardy every day. It's much like Mad Max out there. I've watched the movies for driving tips and survival many times.

I'd add the Chevy Malibu to this list. Seems to be a new choice amongst the thugs.

Great post.

And you can't limit it to 610. That same scenario can be found on any street, road or lane in the entire greater Houston area. Just getting to the grocery store is like running a gauntlet.

My favorite is when somebody whips around me going 95 in a 60, immediately 6 - 8 otherwise law abiding citizens accelerate to give chase. I guess the theory is that the cops can only get the leader, so it's worth endangering all our lives to save 11 seconds. I don't know that we have the worst drivers, but I do think we have the most butt-stupid ones.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Why the fack do people think it is ok to swerve into the lane next to them when there is some sort of obstruction like someone sticking out while trying to make a turn? These azzholes think I should stop and let them swerve into my lane and get pissed when I honk at them. Nothing pisses me off more.
