Time to get this bad boy fired back up again!

By not changing the name, we're simply giving these kids an opportunity to fight for something they believe in only to be squashed by the established tradition. Why would we ever want to take that away from every generation.

I was just looking for this thread...we knew that they kicked the can down the road, wish this could have been done prior to ordering all the signage.

Oh and the new John Tyler building is looking sweet

I stand ready once again to defend past idiocy from present idiocy! Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die!

Crap...forgot to decolonize my quotes before posting!

Tyler is on the map! Glad to be nationally recognized for something positive.

Wow. Of all the towns in East Texas, if you're hanging on to your confederate images tighter than Bogota TX... you got major issues.

https://www.kltv.com/2020/06/27/northeast-texas-school-district-will-change-fight-song-paint-over-confederate-soldier-image/

"Presently, Rivercrest is in the process of changing its fight song and will paint over the image of the confederate soldier in the high school gym," the Facebook post stated. "Our goal is to separate ourselves from any confederate symbolism that could be considered offensive to anyone who comes to our school, and to create an atmosphere of acceptance, respect, and love for everyone."

Lee class of '05

I'm good with the name being changed

Okay with JT staying JT.
pantherag

If one changes they will both change. Lee won't change and JT stay the same.

I thought the same thing. If Rivercrest is going this route then Tyler will too.

Is that a prediction? Or are you hearing that from someone who would know?
J_Landes89

Since it hasn't happened yet, a VERY strong prediction.

I'll leave it at that!

Now, when it comes to the replacing of names process and timeline, I'm not sure. I have not really asked about that bridge just yet

I would suggest naming one of the schools after Jim Plyler

https://tylerpaper.com/news/local/jim-plyler-remembered-for-leading-tyler-isd-through-integration-of-schools/article_bb6d8c3a-a453-54f8-8597-da224a05faa3.html

Schools will no longer be named after a person you can bet on that.

So board meeting Thursday to vote on both schools...one vote...combining them together.

It's done. They wouldn't be calling this to a vote without having it lined out.
Josepi

It's going to be a unanimous 7-0 vote

I think so too.

And around here it seems that most of the anti guys from two years ago are either sitting this one out or they haven't done their monthly check up of this forum.

What a bunch of wusses! Most of them didn't even go to school here. They have no clue. Montalvo is a drama queen SJW, that's all. Tyler will now be more divided than ever.

Being that the motion and vote will include both High Schools changing names, then it's quite possible it will a 7-0 vote. If it was a REL name change only, then it would not be a 7-0 vote and probably closer to 4-3. Not sure they would have enough votes to not change, but it would not have the full backing if JT was not included.

There will be a hefty price tag to name change both HS! Definitely not a good time to be wasting money that is not in the budget and with a looming revenue and budget cut in the next biennium. These dollars will come at the actual expense of education.

I enjoy a lively discussion about interesting and unique topics thus I'm happy some of the original contributors to this thread have shown back up. And I'm always immensely intrigued by the human nature side of things during situations such as this; both the ones for change and the ones against.

I'm not excited about the goings on...actually saddened a bit to be honest. I do think changing the names is the right thing to do though.

Then maybe the last time this came to vote, the board shouldn't have kicked it down the road. Nobody saw the current economic situation coming, but everyone knew the name change issue wasn't going to go away.
I'm not going to name any names, but I still think it was cowardly that nobody seconded the motion to vote the last time this came up.

Anyone following the CD4 election (x-post on Forum 16)

CD4 is huge district in East Texas that run largely alone I-30 from Rockwall to Texarkana, picking up medium sized cities like Paris, Sherman, and Mt Pleasant. It's 3-term Congressman, John Ratcliffe, was picked by Trump to the Director of National Intelligence in May, well after all the hoops for the normal primary were completed. Due to the RONA, Abbot decided against a special election and picking the Repub nominee is in the hands of the Repub Party of Texas leadership for the area (like 150 people).

It is hard to get a good read on who all has thrown their hat in the ring, but word is it is like 19 people. One is a buddy of mine (Trace Johannesen...was Tracer311 on here back in the day). Another is Floyd McClendon, who lost the primary to challenge Colin Allred for CD32 and apparently moved to East Texas... 19 is crazy, and picked by party leadership is interesting.

No ask, just curious if anyone is following. Selection day is in early August.

From the paper:
Quote:

If the policy changes are approved, campuses and facilities will only be named "after any patriotic belief, principled ideals, values, desired qualities or aspired outcomes for District students or the community" or "any local, state, or national geographic area, landmark, or physical attribute."

Is it less cowardly now, to change with public opinion instead of sticking to whatever principles you had?

For whatever reason, it appears public opinion has sufficiently changed to allow the board to make this decision. You could characterize that as cowardly if you wish, or you could characterize it as the board reflecting the changing values of the community. For better or worse, that is what previous boards have done regarding this issue since Lee was founded and named.

Yes. When those principles really didn't exist in the first place.

But WTF do I know (I went to the old Dixie Elementary and JT)?
