Italian - Rosatis, Wise Guys, or Baris on Valley Mills

TexMex - Chuys, Ninfas, Altos de Jaliscos in Hewitt, La Fiesta has always just been average to me

Breakfast - Shipley's, Leal's, Lolita's, Gerik's in Woodway, Cafe Cappucino

Other - Coach's BBQ in McGregor (go if you haven't been), Vitek's, Rudy's (although, not as good as the one in CS), George's in Hewitt, Schmaltz ,Coffee Shop in McGregor

Upscale - Homestead Heritage (does a great monthly dinner), Diamondbacks

Places I haven't been, but have heard good things about - D's Mediteranian, Double R Hamburgers, The Egg and I, Jasper's BBQ, El Crucero

Also, for anyone who's never visited the site, www.WacoFork.com is a great food website for Waco. I visit there every once and while and will usually find a new place that I haven't tried. El Crucero is next on my list.

Last thing…it's interesting you rarely hear anything good about Buzzard Billy's, but they continue to stay open. Maybe when you are the only player in town for that cuisine you can stay open?

I have NEVER understood why people love Shipley's. Thier "kolaches" are literally a hot dog link. Oh yeah, you want jalenpeno sausage??? They put a couple slices in there. Krispy Kremes at those gas stations on Hewitt Dr. are ten times better.

you say all of this like it's a bad thing.

don't get me wrong it is just a hot dog, but it's slathered in cheese and delicious.

We went to eat at The Egg and I for breakfast on Saturday and loved it. Friday we ate at Health Camp...burgers and fries were ok (I had a super health burger) but the shakes were awesome as expected. We went back for another shake yesterday. I can't believe that I have visited Waco for 31 years and the first time I had gone to it was this weekend.

I do want to try Coach's BBQ in McGregor (as previously mentioned) and Kitok's when I come down for 4th of July weekend.

I told you! Egg&I is fabulous. Next visit to Health Camp get the chili burger or fiesta burger whatever it's called.

My husband loves the peanut butter malts but HC's straws are too thin for their superbly thick shakes.

kolaches are suppose to be a sausage link, not a hot dog. Shipley's are eatable if they are fresh. After 3/4 hours the suger melts and it taste horrible.

Actually, kolaches are pastries with a dollop of fruit preserves, cream cheese, poppy, whatever ....

What you are referring to is a "pig in a blanket" or "klobasnek"

Need to brush up on your Czech heritage, bro....

Bohunk will come in and bust some people up.

also, i don't know if your Shipley offers it, but there IS the sausage egg and cheese one that they use real sausage on.

combined with a maple bacon donut, coffee, the newspaper and an unfettered Saturday morning, I'm in bliss.

Bohunk knows what I'm talkin' about, although he will say "pigs in the blanket" are not true klobasneks. He'd be correct. It's all about the dough. But klobasneks certainly much more closely resemble pigs in a blanket than true kolaches, as any bohemian would know....

There's a lady in Boerne that shares your concern, Pablo.

People eat these things in gas stations and think that Czechs can’t cook.
Personally, I like these sausage in a bun kolaches or whatever the heck they're called... especially with a jalapeno tossed in. I'm not big on fruit pastries in general.

love sausage kolaches with GOOD sausage, not a hot dog frank. If you want a hot dog, go to Sonic.

Interestingly, I enjoy a Shipley's pig in a blanket every now and then. They are not klobasniks and they are certainly not kolaches, but for what they are, they aren't bad.
Captain Pablo

I've never had them. I just assumed they were klabasniks.

I like that you get the pig in a blanket with slices of jalapeño inside instead of the jalapeño mixed with the sausage. They do have a bigger sausage "kolache" that might make you happier, but it's a little more expensive.

On another note, there are sooo many places this thread could've gone in regards to sausage kolaches, but I'm glad to see that we keep it above board here on the CenTex board

Did the Baris location in Hewitt close? Was looking for it this past weekend but did not see it. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

Anyone tried Cantina Texas yet?

Greens sausage house in zab. Best kolaches and klabanisks. (Sp?)

Cantina tx is soso. Owned by same guy that owns la fiesta...
Buzzard Billy's went downhill when they moved to docks.
Dave's burger barn is best burger IMO.

It's not called Baris in Hewitt, but I believe it is open. It's behind Bush's and near Wendy's.

That was a pretty good meal.

We've been to Cantina Texas twice. The first time we went more home cooked style, and that was pretty good. The second time I go the stuffed avocado, and it seemed like it was tempura battered. The outside was hot, but the inside of the avocado was cold, as was the chicken. We may go back, but we don't love it.

For the Waco peeps, is Quaker Steak and Lube any good? Any time we're shopping in Central TX Marketplace we talk about going there, but end up at Chuy's instead.

Am I missing anything good?

What about beer? I'm a craft beer drinker... any restaurants (not pubs... I'm good on that) that get more adventurous than Sam Adams, Blue Moon, Shock Top & Shiner Bock?

I gotta agree with that. Their kolaches -- all flavors -- are tough to beat.

And they'll vacuum pack them so you can take them on the road and share with friends and relatives...

I've had some pretty good ones along the Czech corridor headed south. Prasek's in Hilje (El Campo) has good kolaches, BBQ, meats, jerkies, etc...

Green's is still probably my favorite, though...

I hear Crickets is supposed to be a pretty good place to get some food, and they have a ton of beers on tap.

Also, we ate at Sam's on the Square the other night. They have a few beers that deviated from the standard fare, and Barnett's has lots of different brews, and is supposed to be pretty delicious although I haven't eaten there.

Cricket's has something like 100 beers on tap. pretty amazing. I haven't been there in quite a few years (whenever McGee, Lane, and Goodson were playing) but was a good time.

Crikets is a good "gathering" place, but their food has gone downhill bigtime. I know the manager there, and they were real close to shutting the doors. Salty Dog use to be GREAT, but now it's a ghost town because the owner fired all the waitstaff worth a sheat.

You'd get something better to eat if you went north on 35 a mile or so and licked the grease off the floor at Hooters.

Quaker Steak has some good drinks. Other than that, the assessment above is about right.

QS will be out of business soon. What idiot decided to have a place in that location? Impossible to get to.

Everything I've heard about Quaker Steak falls right in line with what others have said... underwhelming.

It's been a while since I've been to Green's, but it has always been great. Love all their stuff.
