One decent year doesn't compare to what Shipley has done. All this being said, I don't know Shipley. I met him once at a coaching convention when a buddy worked for him. I would have been happy if Rhoads would have been hired too. I'm just happy we didn't hire someone without a proven track record, or someone who only has a good year last year to his resume.

I got out of coaching to make more money and more importantly, be able to spend more time with my family. I'm glad I did it, but it was time to move on.

I'm not dumb and I can figure out which years his sons played for him. Heck in Burnet he had two D1 kid's on his team, unless you believe the sips that said McGee was nothing without Shipley. Turn about is fair play. And I believe the super is enamored with his name and his former job on his resume.

Again, most high school coaches are better when they have D1 talent on their team! How can you hold that against him??? He's done a hell of a lot more than the Bell kid!

I don't hold it against him. Warrick's best season he had ramonce and southern had ash for his best seasons. I don't know who that guy in Cameron has on his team, any current d1 players? And Bell is much younger than Shipley to have done as much.

Well then I guess belton better have some D1 players, otherwise it will be the same old excuses

As for Cameron, I don't think Rhodes has had a bunch of D1 guys. It doesn't matter. He just kicks ass regardless

She's not holding that against him. She's saying when he DOESNT have those kids, his results have been mostly good, not great...

I don't see how that's confusing

The guy left HS coaching and is getting back into it because he finds himself unemployed. Is this where his heart is? Or was it necessity?

Is he better choice than Bell? Maybe. I wonder what that committee saw in Bell.

On the other hand, is he a truly solid hire, or was someone blinded by the bling of the Shipley name from years ago?

I think it could go either way. I'm not totally excited by the hire, but on paper it's not a bad hire. We'll see what happens...

Bell might end up being a great coach, I just don't understand how someone can say he has done as much as Shipley?? No facts being that statement. Like I've said many times, Rhoads is a great coach and it's hard to argue with anyone that wanted him. Bell though, has had one good year. Why do you like him......because he's young and energetic?

Also, I read that Strong had offered a job to Shipley. Not sure if that's true or not, but just because he left the high school ranks for a couple of years doesn't mean his heart isn't into it anymore. I guess when Saban left LSU for the NFL he shouldn't have had success at Bama because obviously his heart isn't into the college game.

I didn't say Bell would be better. I just said I would like to know why the committee liked him. Are they all stupid?

As for Shipley, you have no idea whether Strong offered him a job. I highly doubt it. I doubt he's going to willingly go unemployed with nothing in the pipeline.

Saban sucked in the NFL. That's why he isn't there. Or, maybe his heart never left college football...

Maybe Shipley's heart never left high school, but he did.

We'll see how it works out. I don't know if it's a good hire or not. Neither do you. There is plenty in the "pro" column, and there enough to ask questions, and whether this truly was the ideal hire....

Sips hired him as a football analyst, a newly created position.
quote:

His role, according to a news release from Texas' athletic department, is vast, but his primary concerns will deal with the day-to-day operations of UT's recruiting ventures

quote:
Shipley will co-coordinate the walk-on program, assist with film cut-ups and distribution of prospective student-athletes to coaching staff, support the planning and execution of the annual high school coaching clinic and the summer football camp, and assist with hosting prospective student-athletes and guests on official and unofficial visits to campus.
He also will assist with updating recruiting lists, securing transcripts and monitoring contacts and evaluations conducted by the coaching staff.

Not a lot of coaching going on there and certainly not comparable to saban to the nfl and back to college.

Another reason to ASK, repeat ASK whether the belton gig truly is his dream job, or was it a necessity and is Belton going to be going through this same crap in 2 or 3 years when something better comes along...

Ok I get it. You have serious reservations concerning Shipley for whatever weird reason. Strong did indeed offer him a position with basically the same responsibilities he had under Mack. As far as this being his dream job, probably not. However, he had been wanting to get in this area ever since he left Coppell. He tried to get the Temple job twice. With the last time coming when Temple ended up hiring Spradlin. So to say he took this job just because he was unemployed is completely false. And to basically assume that he took this job and doesn't have any ties or cares to this area are also wrong. Good try though.

Shipley might have applied with us, but he was definitely not a finalist.

One of my best friends was on the hiring committee, and she just told me that he was not a finalist.

Rhoads was a finalist, but we went with Mike Spradlin.
trickplay

I have no idea if he was a finalist or not, but I do know that he applied for it. Rhoads was indeed passed on so there is no way we want him then? haha. Actually, I would have been happy with Rick Rhoads. Just not Bell since he hasn't proven anything yet.

Not glum. More like "sigh, same ol' same "ol"

I was skeptical of the Shipley hire, and raised an eyebrow at the rumor that the supe made the unilateral decision to hire him

So far the team looks pretty bad (other than a thrashing of a terrible Unviersity team)

The offense does not look innovative at all, the defense is again porous, to put it nicely

And there have been some strange coaching decisions -- opening with an onside kick against Hendrickson that was a disaster, punting in a RARE 4 down territory against SP that netted 16 yards

There is still a lot of football left to play and district hasn't started

But early signs aren't good. Those kids did not look ready to play the last two weeks
