They make faraday pouches. Probably your best bet.

That does nothing if they have the ability to program a key without stealing the signal from a key in the house.

Then what good would the box he wants do?

They don't make your car impossible to steal; they keep the signal from being stolen from the keyless entry/remote.

I have a ring cam facing my truck ('24 Z71) in the driveway (Heights area). Went off one night about two months ago at 2 AM, thug was trying to cut the wires to the horn. I opened the door and yelled at him to GTFO and he jumped, turned to run, face planted on the asphalt, and jumped in their car and drove off. Next day I moved the horn into the area above the wheel well where they can't get to it. Also use a steering wheel lock as a deterrent.

Indeed, but that's not how they are stealing these GM trucks. They just plug in, reprogram the transponder to their fob, and off they go. There's no stealing of the original key signal needed.

Relocating the horn and using a steering and/or OBD lock seems to be the way.

I have an Igla immobilizer on my truck. Even with the keys, you're not going anywhere unless you know the code. I know that the module is hidden somewhere in the engine bay, but no clue as to where.

Nice thing about the Igla is that I still have the ability to remote start, even with the key, if you get it started and put it in gear, the truck will switch back to Park and turn off.

Isn't that exactly what a faraday pouch would do?

I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone to not use your garage as storage (if you have one). Get rid of all the **** you have in there that you are hoarding and/or not using and use your garage for what it was intended - housing your cars.

You will immediately become a non-target for car theft.

Follow me for more common sense advice.

This line of thought annoys me to no end. Comes up every time there's a vehicle theft thread. I've got 2 cars in the garage already so I guess it's on me if the one in the driveway gets stolen?

The non-target theory would work better too if I didn't know folks who had their cars stolen from work, hotels, restaurants, parking garages, etc.

My line of thought then does not apply to your third car.

It also does not apply to cars stolen from work, hotels, restaurants, parking garages, etc. because those are out in the open and you have way less control over that.

My line of thought only applies to people with 1-2 cars getting their cars stolen out of their driveways or off the curb who can't use their garage because they are hoarding crap.

That applies to a lot of people. It's simple risk mitigation.

I agree with you about the hoarding aspect but, the other factor is the size - height and length of vehicles that many people drive these days.

Quick example, last night, my cousin and I went to the same place for dinner and I parked my Jeep Wrangler in the parking garage that had a 6'7" height restriction. He couldn't get in with his F-350.

You see a lot of smaller garages in older homes, and in neighborhoods of small "starter homes" which we have plenty of both in Galveston County.

When I bought my first house in Round Rock, I could fit my Grand Cherokee in the garage but when I added a Ford Expedition, couldn't fit both of them in the garage at the same time.

My house in Highlands Ranch, Colorado had a much bigger garage and I could fit both the Grand Cherokee and the Expedition with enough room to open the doors to get out too.

What I had in California and what I have now in Galveston is an alley behind my house. This gives me access to the backyard so I can store extra vehicles off the street.

A less common factor is the length of the vehicle.

In my garage in California, I could barely park the Expedition inside because, it was so long compared to the size of my 1940s era garage. With my current house in Galveston, my (only worth scrap value) 760Li is so bloody long that it has to be parked precisely in the correct spot for the garage doors to close. A lot of folks can't be bothered to park precisely in their garage.

A lot of words to say that folks vehicles might not fit in their garage, independent of hoarding.

Agreed. My DCLB Tacoma won't fit in my garage due to length if I want to be able to have room to access my work bench.

I put a Ravelco in my truck - they work. Thieves tore apart my dash ($2,700 in damages) but couldn't get it started without the plug.

The annoying part of the ravelco is you have to pull a near-golfball sized interrupter plug to make it work. Most of the time i don't bother pulling the plug, so I don't have protection. When I do pull the plug I'll typically hide it in the truck instead of taking it with me.

I also have a club, but it doesn't get used much. In truth, they're about the same amount of trouble to mess with and one is 1/30th the cost... I don't know what thiefs think about Clubs. maybe they see it and pass on my truck.

I've got a two car garage and a shop I could fit 6 cars in and there are a grand total of 0 cars in either of them. I do keep a boat and a tractor in the shop though.

I chose Igla for several reasons:
  • No plug to carry. I don't like to carry a lot in my pocket.
  • I like the remote start option - Can't do that with the plug pulled on the Ravelco
  • I also don't like having the plug mounted low on the dash - Igla is invisible
  • Igla you can manually enter the PIN, put a small fob on your key ring, or use the app. I use the app, the fob is tiny, but like mentioned above, I do not like to carry extra stuff
If I take my truck for maintenance, I'll bring a fob with me and leave it in the truck.

I decided to check some numbers on Texas vehicle thefts.
https://www.kxan.com/news/these-are-the-most-common-cars-being-stolen-in-texas/

Rank, Vehicle and Quantity for Texas for 2024
Quote:

1 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 6,453
2 GMC Sierra 1500 4,073
3 Hyundai Elantra 3,140
4 Ford F150 Series 2,371
5 Ford F250 Series 2,103
6 Hyundai Sonata 2,031
7 Dodge Charger 1,582
8 Kia Optima 1,580
9 Chevrolet Camaro 1,511
10 Dodge Ram Pickup 1,501

I did not expect to see Hyundai Elantra so high on the list.

As far as theft by city, I'm not surprised it's Houston.
Of course if you lump in the rest of the Metroplex, that's higher than Houston.

https://www.beautifydata.com/united-states-crimes/fbi-ucr/2024/ranking-of-cities-by-number-of-crimes-by-crime-type-per-state/motor-vehicle-theft/texas

I ran this list out to 50 which happened to include Galveston.
